well the, it appears that the Hawks are due - keep playing the same lotto numbers. And a 100yd ko return TD is a great way to start a game.On opening drives against P4 teams, Iowa has taken 14 plays for 16 yards and 2 INTs. Zero points.

Rutgers says hi!well the, it appears that the Hawks are due - keep playing the same lotto numbers. And a 100yd ko return TD is a great way to start a game.
Yeah because there just wasn't enough success with it for those 20+ years.Kirk was asked this week and he said he was back to taking the ball like he did for 20 some years after softening on it for a few years.
He concedes there are pros and cons that his staff points out but said he is going back to his original philosophy.
The best reason is to make sure you have wind in 4th qtr...so if it is windy..fine. otherwise listen to Lester and woods.
Just do a clear-eyed analysis each year and determine which unit is best and let that guide the decision. In recent years the defense has been top ten while offense has been bottom- feeders...easy call.Yeah because there just wasn't enough success with it for those 20+ years.
Are you guys all brand new to Iowa football or something?
That's what I thought. And then the Orange Bowl happened.well the, it appears that the Hawks are due - keep playing the same lotto numbers. And a 100yd ko return TD is a great way to start a game.
Is that good?On opening drives against P4 teams, Iowa has taken 14 plays for 16 yards and 2 INT
Funny how Andy Reid has the best QB in football and still elects to take the ball in the 2nd half. We threw a pick in the IU game that gave them 7 on the initial drive as well which looking back was the difference in the game. There is zero justification for him to continue to do it. Start the other team at their own 25 and let your defense get a stop.I'm pretty sure Kirk's decision on kickoffs is not going to be influenced by us posting here.* Fans can swear they will never attend another Iowa game until KF changes his kickoff policy (we've read many of those re: other Kirk stuff). That never changes anything and won't change anything for the final ten years of his Hawkeye coaching tenure.
*- We do have a right to our opinions, which is what this place is all about.
Well it’s basically cost us 1 game and put us in the hole in the Penn St game as well. But sure.Getting or deferring the Opening Kick is extremely overblown.
I mean, you don't know what would have happened if we deferred.Well it’s basically cost us 1 game and put us in the hole in the Penn St game as well. But sure.![]()

In the NFL, teams that win the coin toss overwhelmingly choose to defer the opening kickoff and the data backs up why.
Win Percentage Breakdown
• Teams that defer the opening kickoff win 52.5% of the time.
• Teams that receive the opening kickoff win 49.0% of the time
While the difference may seem small, it’s statistically significant over hundreds of games. The strategic advantage of deferring lies in the potential for a “double possession”: scoring before halftime and then receiving the ball to start the second half. This can swing momentum and create scoring opportunities that are harder to match.
Trend Over Time
• Before 2008, teams almost always chose to receive.
• By 2014, over 70% of coin toss winners were deferring

Receive Or Defer: Does Either Provide An Advantage? | Sharp Football
Does it matter more if NFL teams choose to receive the opening kickoff or defer to the second half?www.sharpfootballanalysis.com
He usually always takes the football first although there have been times where he choose to kick it.This is the first year I have watched Iowa football. Does Ferentz always take the kickoff instead of deferring?

Unless weather plays into decision, otherwise totally agreeGetting or deferring the Opening Kick is extremely overblown.
I'd say a blocked FG return for TD and an easy missed FG, a throw that literally bounced off our receiver's chest and was picked all had way more to do with what happened in that game.Well it’s basically cost us 1 game and put us in the hole in the Penn St game as well. But sure.![]()
You are 1,000% correct. KF tried to explain why he's started taking the ball in his Tuesday press conference, but it was the usual gibberish that made no sense at all. Unless you have a dynamic offense, or the weather conditions are a factor, ALWAYS DEFER. In Iowa's case, deferring puts your best unit on the field first, the defense. It gives you a good chance to gain the field position advantage from the get-go. The defense can make better use of the adrenaline rush at the beginning of the game than can the offense. And, of course, you are assured of getting the ball first to start the second half, immediately after you've made halftime adjustments. On opening drives against P4 teams, Iowa has taken 14 plays for 16 yards and 2 INTs. Zero points.

I'm not guessing. This is KF showing his foolish stubborness. There is no logic, there is no evidence, there is no sane rationale for Iowa taking the ball first. It's absolute idiocy. Put your best unit on the field, the defense, stuff the opponent, and get the ball in good field position for your offense. And know that you'll be taking the ball to start the second half. There is EVERY reason for Iowa to defer, barring some bizarre weather, and absolutely NO REASON for Iowa to take the damn ball. This is just another infuriating act of stubborn malfeasance by the dean of college football coaches.Just do a clear-eyed analysis each year and determine which unit is best and let that guide the decision. In recent years the defense has been top ten while offense has been bottom- feeders...easy call.
I would guess that 90% of coaches defer..maybe higher.
I guess this is kf showing confidence in his offense.
Fine. But the Iowa head coach should, because it is a key factor in winning and losing.Couldn't care less on who gets the ball first
What's the stats on it across the college football universe?Fine. But the Iowa head coach should, because it is a key factor in winning and losing.
Against a decent opponent? I'd guess it was during the Hayden Fry era when Iowa actually had an offense on a regular basis. When was the last time we scored on an opening drive?
