Did the Kinnick tour pre-game this year. Staff guy that was shuffling us around says it is the players who decide what alt uniforms look like and when to wear them. He said basically Kirk doesn't get involved in that at all. He did say if they came up with something crazy he may insert himself.

I don't mind the black pants once a year with the otherwise standard uniform.

The fad of mostly ridiculous "alternate" uniforms that has infested sports for years now may be slowly fading. I can only hope.

Marketing 101 is to establish your name, your logo, and your colors and stick with them. You want instant recognition, not some goofy one-off all the time . . . unless you're floundering for any identity at all, like the folks in Ames, who think black-and-white unis are a cool way to show out despite having cardinal and gold as their school colors since 1899.

BTW: Iowa State was founded in 1858 as the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm. The original school colors were black, silver, and gold. The change was made to cardinal red because it was cheaper and more readily available than silver.

The University of Iowa, just for the record, was founded in 1847.

Banana peel power!

Down 56-0 to the Buckeyes in the first half.

I'm not sure why that game isn't more popular amongst the fanbase just in review? That second half after our starters were pulled we outscored them 35-0. That was as one of the most bizarre Hawkeye games I ever watched. The first half I thought Ohio State would drop 100 on us and then in the second half, I thought we could come back with our backups. And yes, banana peel is definitely a fashion period best forgotten 😂😭

Marketing 101...NFL, NBA, MLB all break the rules and have fun doing it.

Iowa scored a touchdown just before half , making it 56-7. And Iowa's starters were playing in the second half, the Buckeye starters were not. That's why Iowa outscored them 28-0 in the second half.

That's it, I was going by memory and I was a college sophomore so hazy Saturday memories. I did have thoughts we could come back at one point but realized that if they put the OSU starters back in we were done for.

Meh, I'm fine with the alt uniforms once a year (I agree about the overkill though). I do wish they would use uniforms that worked well more than once though.

Like the 1939 throwbacks or arguably their best alts, the 1960 uniforms. That one should be worn annually once a year, if not moreso.

I agree 100%. The 1958’s (not 1960) were the absolute best with the ‘39s not far behind. I have always felt throwback uniforms should be worn every year in the Homecoming game.

I know Iowa was terrible at the time, but I wouldn’t mind seeing throwbacks that feature these helmets:

If they're going black out they should've gone these...

The "blackout" unis that are nothing more than our regular home jerseys our regular helmet and the black pants w/gold stripe just look dumb. Especially the black pants with gold stripe, fugly.

The banana peel unis were the only time I wondered if Hayden got high.
I remember something about him being really into trying to market Iowa's brand and make us stand out i.e. adjust with the times.......................

To be fair, I think it was a 90s thing and Hayden fell into the trap.

My favorite were from the woodshed game, and not just because of the game. The uniforms themselves were awesome.

Once a year I like alternate uniforms but these don’t really even count in my opinion.
I hear ya, but here's my take: Every time I re-watch Iowa dismantle Urban Meyer and Ohio State, I always find myself saying, "Man, I wish we were wearing our actual uniforms. The random fan wouldn't have any idea that was Iowa handing out that beatdown. They might think it was Oregon."

All organizations hope to establish an identity based on a logo, name, and colors. Whether it's a sports team or an international conglomerate, any time you abandon your identity--except for some rare special reason--it is a mistake.

Throwback uniforms, if done well, make sense ONCE a year. And that's it. Just because you can do something--have a different uniform for every game--doesn't mean you should.

Hayden anticipated the trend of alternate uniforms and tried to accommodate it. The result wasn't great, but he saw the future. If you really wanna wonder about some program getting high on alt unis, you need look no further than Oregon. They've been wearing some of the most outrageous, ridiculous excuses for uniforms for quite a while.
