The worst part of the deal is the co-DC we had to hire to get those guys. Smith is taking all the heat but no one is talking about this other co-DC.
Co-DC but the “senior” person will always get the heat over the “junior”….just like GS as he’s the “senior” being the HC in charge of it all.

Higher profile position will always get more scrutiny.

But we hired their DC to be our co-DC. Hmmmm……
Maybe they were happy to see him go? Like many of the portal players we picked up- whiffs. Something happened in the last 2 seasons and Greg has lost his mojo. We will see how he finishes. Anything less than 2 wins is a huge fail.

His mojo = starters on D and DC to be the HC elsewhere. I agree with you about the 2 wins.

I should clarify- 2 more wins. Purdue, Illinois, Maryland, Penn State- 4 chances at "winnable" games. Frankly, he should be able to make 3 wins out of that slate. Have my doubts he will get even 2.

Like not getting their doors blown off by Louisville?
Competiton is all relative. Whether it’s UConn or JMU or whomever yea the competition isn’t the same but neither are the resources. They’re not getting checks from the B10 either. It’s all relative. They largely play competition with schools that are on par with themselves.

Anything less than 2 wins is 1 win lol…that’s pretty bad…should at least get that next week against Purdue. Maryland and a free falling PSU were the other two I thought possible. Still, 2-3 wins isn’t good.

IMO, the goal is to be a ranked team at the end of the year every so often and I don’t think that’s asking a lot and is realistic.

Put this in perspective, Greg makes 6.5 million a year and Mora makes 2 million. If they gave Mora 4 million a year, they double his salary and we save 2.5 million a year. Not to mention, Mora's assistants make peanuts compared to ours, so more savings there
or look at it like this
Mora is willing to come with what he is masking now , until Greg's buyout if paid off.
Greg won't take a lump sum payout for a penny less then his contract calls for
So RU pays Mora $2 mil for the next 5-6 years and gives Greg his $6.5 every year
That winds up not a savings, but a $8.5 mil payout, but only $2 Mil more
If Mora won't accept his current pay, then whatever he's willing to accept is added to what Greg will receive every year until his buyout is paid off.
Looking at what tho HC's are making , that's not very expensive if Rutgers can become constant major bowl participants and minor bowl invites the tears they fail to do that.
I won't say playoffs, but I can secretly hope

I've turned into a pessimist .
I see only Purdue as a "possible" win
Illinois is too good
Maryland, though not a good team, better program now then Rutgers
Ohio State, only if they think it's an away game and not show up at the Horseshoe
The free falling Nits would be a possible win, except Rutgers gave up the game at halftime of it's Daffy Duck game
so there's no free falling in them, they already fell .
Rutgers will be the team that cures all ills ,for the team that plays them

I've not seen his named mentioned anywhere, Just praise for what he's doing at UConn but nothing as far as candidate for these open positions, especially not at the P4 level, but you never know.

I think people underestimate the value of a P4 HC job and overestimate how wanted some coaches are or aren't. The opportunity for a P4 HC job doesn't just come around for everyone. It's also well paid, even on the low end, compared to other positions.

Like say this year. Jon Sumrall or Alex Golesh (like Herman, Fickell, Napier back in the day) could be picky so not every P4 would have chance at them. If you got beyond the hot candidates of the year and further into the G5, I think you'd probably be able to attract most of them if you have a P4 opening.

Or coordinators, someone like Will Stein. He's a hot name mentioned so I could see him be picky too (Ryan Day was at one time) but even we got Ash, who sucked but he was a coordinator on a championship team. So a coordinator like say Ryan Grubb at Alabama who I don't see mentioned too often could be someone that is gettable at plenty of P4 jobs.

Point being, in any given year there will be a handful that are picky and likely out of reach but also plenty of other worthy of an opportunity names. You make your best educated guess and hopefully you get a little lucky as well.

If it works great, if not try again. You can end up worse, the same or better...who knows. My thing is don't lock yourself up with bad deals and don't be afraid of the unknown.

I’m firmly in Greg camp but Mora is a great coach. Anybody who could win at UConn in this day and age is a good coach. Blowing out BC at BC is a very nice feather in his cap.

And they really won at Syracuse {who had their starting QB} but got jobbed by the Refs.

He's going to win with our players?
First of all I imagine he would bring in a lot of players who will fit his system, but given that have have some talented receivers and running backs, with his track record I have no doubt he would get a lot more out of them, and he wouldn’t get shut down the second half.

I do not share your optimism. I think he is equally as likely (if not more) to become the offensive Chris Ash.

Why? With that attitude you will never do anything. You would have said the same about Dan Lanning, when he was a DC at Georgia before he took the Oregon job. Stein is considered one of the rising stars in the industry and is on the hot board for just about every open job right now. Chris Ash was not seen the same way, and Rutgers was the only school that Seriously considered him, mainly on the back of an Urban Meyer endorsement.

He does a lot more with a lot less. Schiano's coaching and recruiting budget is probably 3 times the size of Mora's and Mora just beat BC on the road and took Syracuse to overtime at the Carrier dome
BC coached by "legend" Bill O'Brien too.

Funny, it was "reported" Ash was a finalist for the Syracuse job, but later it was revealed by a search committee member that Syracuse never spoke with Ash!! Great job by Ash's agent.

Huh ?

Last time vs BC - Rutgers beats BC at BC
Last 3 times vs Cuse - Rutgers wins all 3

It's not embarrassing to Indiana.
I wouldn't get caught up in the names of schools of where players come from or feeder school etc...

I see players go up from the G5 and contribute at the P4, players from higher status P4 go down to the lower status P4 or G5 and contribute, etc......players go up and down the ranks and all over....some will work out and some won't...just like "traditional" recruiting....it's up to the coaches to figure out how to put the pieces together and make it go...or not lol.
