He did it twice. So did I and I have not watched the replays, you cant even contact the snapper
The only thing I would have done different is we had 6 seconds left plenty of time to throw an out pattern to the sideline to get out of bounds to get closer. If not open throw it out of bounds with 2 to 1 second left.Checking in after getting home from the bars, seems this is about the FG attempt end of half.
If you think that was a bad decision, frankly, you must be on fent.
If you have a kicker with the leg to make this you take that chance every time.scoring points in football is hard. If you have the chance to score you take it. Period.
I’ve been a lurker with this community since 2014 back in rivals, and this is literally the dumbest post I’ve ever seen - that is truly saying something. You should be offended, I am saying that you are truly one of the stupidest people on this planet OP.
I knew psu was overloading the middle as you could see it on every scrimmage kick. I will have to look at it and if they did contact the center then why were the hawk coaches yellingHe did it twice.
We stuffed them on 4th down at the goal line. Huge play. Then DB Entringer lined up in the neutral zone giving them their first TD with a fresh set of downs. There have been a lot of bad halves and full games of football under Kirk, this first half is up there with the worst of them. We looked so bad in 2 facets of the game and mediocre on defense. The first TD for PSU was atrocious defense and lack of tackling.
Hey everybody....breaking news. Kirk Ferentz is a drug fiend.Checking in after getting home from the bars, seems this is about the FG attempt end of half.

And what about the previous 4th down where we missed 3 tackles short of line to gain?We stuffed them on 4th down at the goal line. Huge play. Then DB Entringer lined up in the neutral zone giving them their first TD with a fresh set of downs.
That's a BAD play by a pretty reliable guy in Entringer. The Defense actually did their job pretty well with a short field there.
We had to replace 2 outstanding linebackers, and those replacements are the weakest link in our Defense, IMO.
LolNah. You can’t rationalize that call. You just can’t. I was in a bar with half the fans drunk and they were in disbelief when he lined up to kick that FG. And incredulous when he decided to kick it again after seeing Drew didn’t have the distance. 10 other reasons it was an unfathomable call. No coach would do it. None.
Some fans need to stop giving KF a pass. It’s silly.
Slight correction, it was still 4th down. Just from a centimeter closer. We stuffed them on 4th down at the goal line. Huge play. Then DB Entringer lined up in the neutral zone giving them their first TD with a fresh set of downs.

Well I can tell you with 100% certainty PRIOR TO THE KICK, the first thing I said was "what in the HELL are we doing!". There were MULTIPLE things that could have been done, and Kirk being Kirk picked the worst one of those options.Your letting the result (blocked for TD) determine your feelings on the action that preceded it (the kick).
It doesn't work like that.
I believe some of you plain folk (Fran) just call it hindsight is 20/20.
If you're gonna tell me you were clamoring to punt before the FG attempt because of the .08% chance of a block and TD return, you are so full of sh*t.
My bad then. I guess they were going for it again either way. Entringer is a pretty solid player, but that was.........bad.Slight correction, it was still 4th down. Just from a centimeter closer.
You think Gronowski can throw a ball that far? Maybe he can, but coIor me skeptical. Now granted, we're more likely to complete a Hail Mary than a straightforward 10-15 yard pass at any time of any game but......And if he throws an incomplete hail marry you’d all be pissed he didn’t try the fg.
And if he throws an incomplete "hail marry" we would have still been leading at the half. And if he throws an incomplete hail marry you’d all be pissed he didn’t try the fg.
The FG block by PSU, they just destroyed that side of the o-line with their rush… they pushed the o-line back 3-5 yards off the LOS enabling that d-lineman to block the FG attempt. It was more about the o-line than the trajectory of the kick.I thought jumping over the center was illegal.
Agreed. And I definitely did not want him to get married at that point in the game. There's enough distractions for a QB as it is.And if he throws an incomplete "hail marry" we would have still been leading at the half.
? Are you psychic? How do you know a hail marry doesn't get tipped and picked off at the line of scrimmage for a T.D. or fumbled for a scoop and score? The proper play would have been take a knee and go to the locker room. That would have caused the message board heros and boo birds to come out anyway. And if he throws an incomplete "hail marry" we would have still been leading at the half.

And... How do either of you know it would be an incomplete pass? Assumption or hypothetical when they should have taken a knee and went into halftime.read the post I was replying to?
Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!! Maybe next time we will win the gameWe really do have some ignorant (being nice here) fans.
I don't know it would be an incomplete pass. If you're saying that we should have taken a knee and gone into halftime, yes, I agree.And... How do either of you know it would be an incomplete pass? Assumption or hypothetical when they should have taken a knee and went into halftime.
Attempt that FG 99 more times, nothing happens.Well I can tell you with 100% certainty PRIOR TO THE KICK, the first thing I said was "what in the HELL are we doing!". There were MULTIPLE things that could have been done, and Kirk being Kirk picked the worst one of those options.
Aside from the fact Penn State had back to back games with blocked punts, so they seem to have a knack for blocking kicks, and that % goes up with the low trajectory required to actually pull off a Christmas Miracle on a cold October night in Iowa.
IMO, the chances of that kick being blocked, was definitely higher than the chance of making it. Then it's a live ball and all hell CAN break loose from there, and as we saw, it did.
And of course it's a Big Ten game against a team with an interim Head Coach and a backup QB, and you're playing like **** but still leading at halftime. Now you've given them all the momentum going into the locker room, and they get the ball because of your first awful decision at the start of the game. Next thing you know we're down 21-10.Amazing we were able to pull it out at the end, so kudos to Iowa's players for pulling Kirk's *** out of the fire.
I don't think Kirk should be fired over it, mostly because he should have been fired several extensions prior to yesterday.
It would have been the longest kick in college football history! Please stop saying that it was a good idea. Penn st had already blocked a few kicks this year before this. So it wasn’t luck that they blocked it. We were trying to do something that HAS NEVER BEEN DONE in college football, a 66 yard kick. Just admit it was a terrible idea (like our coach said) and move on. It made winning the game much much harder because of it.Attempt that FG 99 more times, nothing happens.
It's not the chances of it being blocked to making it,
it's the chances of it being blocked and returned for a TD, to that not happening.
So small.
Did PSU even have a guy back to catch it?
This decade, 60+ yrd field goal attempts have been good 22% of the time in the NFL.It would have be

65 is the longest after the tee was banned in 1989.This decade, 60+ yrd field goal attempts have been good 22% of the time in the NFL.
It would have been 6th longest in college history.
Certainly not a good decision but he owned it after the game. Interesting there have been numerous posters question why he didn't try long kicks in the past vs. a punt. Fireable? Come on man.The absolute worst coaching decision I’ve ever seen.
completely unforgivable. Just mind boggling.
Let the kid get the record!65 is the longest after the tee was banned in 1989.

It's disturbing (well, slightly) how many judge the play call by its 1 in a 1,000 (bizarre-super-ricochet-and-perfect-bounce-to-a-running-defender) outcome. If he makes the kick, KF would be lauded for finally having enough aggression, letting a player with a super gift try to break a record and extend our lead. And if it just missed or was blocked and recovered for no score, all would be fine.Wasn’t terrible. I’m sure we could come up with a top 10 clock management screw up for Kirk that trumps this.
he’s still a hall of famer. No questions asked.
you could ***** about the decision of he didn’t own it. The line got killed on that play. Woods should be the one apologizing.
He owned his mistake which is far more than most would have done. And in all likelihood if he would have went into the the half time not trying something the same members of the we can do better brigade would have been crying about being too conservative. My beef with the decision had more to do with the fact there would have maybe been a second of two left on the clock. Kick it 100 times again and it won't get blocked and run in for a touchdown.I mean it’s just hard foundation how bad that was. Not even amateurish. Just incompetence. Purely incompetent.
WE WON.It would have be

Always easy to be critical (thats being nice) when a play goes wrong but then quiet as a mouse when a play go right.
Hmmmm. Maybe make sure that outside guys on both sides at least have someone lay a hand on them? If you watch the video the guy that got the ball was untouched because it looked like the Iowa blockers were heading downfield in case Drew missed the field goal short. Why would you punt on 3rd and 2?
The worst part about the blocked FG is now KFz is going to be gun shy.
The Iowa player didn't block the PSU guy who scored, didn't really need to since he was coming around the outside and wouldn't get to the kick in time to block it.Hmmmm.
