I like the guy. Really do….but…,we almost lost another game due to special teams. Need to clean this stuff up. Missed kicks. Blocked kicks.
We are not helping the D with this stuff.
Not bagging on him….but damn

You know, looking at that blocked kick I don't think execution was the biggest issue. The call to attempt it was the problem. I think they've been waiting for a situation to let him try a really long kick they forgot about the game situation.

As for the block itself, the kick had to be low to get more distance and the PSU guy got pretty lucky to get his arm up in the right spot at the right time to block it, especially to get the block so the ball bounced all the way back the way it did. Usually blocks like that go to the side or skitter just beyond the line of scrimmage. He had to kick it low to get the distance. The mistake was the call to do it, not he execution of the play imo.

If you think the call to attempt that kick was the problem, that is on Coach Woods if he vehemently didn't object. We do not know that, but would be a good question for him to answer. Blindly following is not a good coaching trait. If Kirk overrules then so be it, but there has to be a questioning voice. Part of coaching is seeing every scenario possible and questioning.

It almost certainly was Woods' call, but Kirk still would have had to OK it.

call is ok…if you have a weapon use it. but don’t screw it up. in the long run even this miss will end up helping i think, so a super long distance fg may be there if we need it

The unblocked guy that recovered it in full stride. Should never happen. Someone didn’t lay a block. Looked to me like they were more worried Drew would be short so they were running to cover the ball if he missed well short.

Kirk had a long discussion with Levar right after the play and on the walk into locker room. I watched them. Didn’t seem heated.

I think we have a combo of odd problems right now.

1. I'm sure Stevens can hit from that far. That's not an issue. No, I wouldn't have kicked again after he missed short last night. Yes, I'd try it again if we need it.
2. The blocking is 100% an issue on punt and fg team. That's the third block this year?
3. Long snapping, something rarely talked about, seems to be inconsistent. Snaps low, high and rarely perfect.
4. Stevens has the yips on top of all these problems.

The guy bull rushed out guy '5 yds back so the angle was cut way down when he raised his arm.
Terrible execution

There's a new long snapper this season, I believe, and snaps have not been consistent. The holder did a great job on at least one really high snap Saturday night. The long snapper and holder are the two most anonymous players on any football team . . . until they make a mistake. They get no credit for doing their jobs right, but somehow announcers and reporters can find the time to point them out when they screw up. The kicker gets all the credit, but without a good snap and a good hold, the best kicker in history ain't worth spit.

Well, they saw that he missed the first attempt by a mile short, so that would make sense.

The guy off the edge, who recovered the kick, doesn't usually get much of a block put on him. The timing of the play doesn't typically let the edge guy get close enough for a block, usually. Him coming off the edge and scooping and scoring was just the way the ball bounced. I thought the LG/LT got pushed back too far and made it even easier for a block, especially with the low trajectory.

I would also assume Kirk and Levar came to a mutual agreement on the kick and it wasn't one over the other. The result of the play probably wasn't on their radar, but yea, shouldn't have ever been called. Glad he took ownership of it, its' part of why the players love him so much.

What would you expect him to say? Thats Kirk in a nutshell. The buck stops with him, and he'll always take that. I guarantee you that Levar told Kirk he's got this and theres only a few seconds left. Lets do this. He's been making 60+ bombs in practice for a couple of years. Of courseas mentioned if everything else isn't perfect, you get what happened.

KF said he made the call as a good head coach should. It is on him. My point was more along the lines of I hoped Coach Woods objected, if he did not, he should have. It was not a good call. The proper call is take a knee and go into the half leading the game. Over the years people have complained of Kirk being to conservative so they should have been supportive....until it gets blocked then they call for his firing...

Wasn't as good as when Clayborne blocked the kick and in stride got the ball and ran for a TD at Penn State.
That was a thing of pure beauty. I appreciate the good memory you just brought up.

It seemed to me watching it live in the stadium, that he backed off a little on the kick since the whistle had been blown. That’s why it was so short. He has the leg to make it from that distance (he kicked it thru the goalpost on a kickoff later on.

Part of the problem, not all by any means, was that on a longer kick the trajectory is lower than on a short attempt. Might have been blocked anyway.

Honestly I read it the other way. Kirk has Coordinators call what they want and then he has approval on big calls. I'd be pretty certain it was Coach Woods call and Kirk gave his blessing. Why else are they in those positions making 1 million+ a year. I doubt that Phil even has to run much by Kirk.

Thought the same thing. Didn't Marshall Koehn do and then acknowledge doing the same thing on his game winner in Kinnick as time expired? I think kickers like to do it to get a feel. Whatever they have to do to help their mental side of things they'll do

You can't coach the yips, which it seems Stevens has a bit of this year. As for the Weigen mistakes, you have to take the the errors with the exciting play. I don't think LeVar all of a sudden forgot how to coach ST. They players have to execute.
