Can we never go back to recruiting quarterbacks that cannot run? This team has three wins and gets shredded in every other game with Petras or Hill or McNamera at quarterback. Gronowski has carried this team by running on one healthy leg. What a stud.

He can pass. Have you seen our receivers??? Do we even have any tight ends? The three best teams we have played this year all scored big touchdowns in the first half off interceptions. And not a single one was Mark’s fault.
I would agree with this expect for the last three years with Brian Ferentz at offensive coordinator. We were better off just punting and playing defense the entire game than having our offense out there against good teams.
I kinda disagree on the Petras front. He had/has way more arm talent than than any of these guys, but a terrible oline and OC. He was not in any way mobile however and the guy took a ton of big hits back there. I'm pretty sure he had PTSD by the time he left Iowa. Hill was a bad JC qb, and McNamara was MG with no good legs. Sullivan was actually the most complete QB of the last several years. He's the only one who could throw AND run.
How about a receiver that can catch the effing ball on the opening drive.
You can't be serious about this. He's missed open receivers all year. I would agree with you on the tight end situation. They're bad.

He stats would be better if he would quit hitting receivers in the hands who then deflect the ball to the defenders.
I kid about that, but yeah, his passing has been.....mediocre. But he's making up for it with his legs. It certainly is a better situation than it was the last 2 or 3 seasons.
He's a good runner, no question. He's a mediocre passer IMO, but his inconsistent receivers and complete lack of a Tight End with a pulse hinders him certainly (we had some good Tight Ends not that long ago, they didn't utilize them, now the cupboard is bare).
Might be wishful thinking on my part, but I believe he finds a way to beat #3 Indiana if he finishes that game.
As crazy as it sounds, this Team full of flaws is a couple of plays away from being undefeated and ranked in the Top 5. So kudos to the Iowa players for hanging in there.
Iowa isn't a top 5 team in my opinion (although you are probably right about where they would be ranked if they were undefeated). But honestly, it is pretty hard to place teams because right now because Ohio State is so far beyond every other team in the country it almost seems unimaginable that they could lose. There's a lot of parity from 2-15 but I feel like Ohio State would beat any of those teams by 20 points. They have future NFL players at every position. I know I say that and Ohio State will go lay a stinker now but man have they looked good this season.
The Buckeye's have been doing this for a long time. If anything they've under achieved IMO, because they're consistently LOADED. Their players don't go there to "play school".
They have, but the gloves are off with NIL money now so they don't need to try and pretend they aren't paying players. I also think the Big 10 held them back from that in the past where the SEC encouraged it which is how the SEC was able to dominate for so long. I'm not sold on MG's passing so far, BUT your point is valid. Maybe if "God's gift" to Kirk Ferentz, the Bud Man, were replaced with someone who could (1) recruit wide receivers and (2) coach wide receivers, that would be one gigantic help. Over the decades I've watched Iowa football, the Hawkeyes have had bad-hands receivers, slow receivers, short receivers, but seldom, if ever, have they had such a collection of "receivers" who have helped the other team catch more passes than they do. Maybe stop recruiting volleyball players to play receiver.
If Howard is healthy, he and Vander Zee should be the primary targets. Line one of 'em up at TE on occasion and use those great TE patterns.
I do believe Gronowski would be an effective passer, not great but effective, if he had even an average group of receivers to target.
Sullivan could have been terrific this season. Give MG the credit he's earned, but Iowa might be undefeated if they had stuck with Sully, and he had stayed healthy. He's much faster and more elusive than MG, and his passing was better than anything we've seen so far this season. And I think Sully was available for less than 1.3 million dollars.

I agree, but ifs and buts are 20/20. I don’t know why staff didn't agree that he was the guy but there was obviously something about him that they didn't like.

So, almost everyone thinks he's a mediocre to bad passer. You all realize that he had shoulder surgery on his throwing arm and didn't start throwing at full capacity until mid to late July. Perhaps that might be a reason he isn't quite as accurate as he needs to be. Geez.
He's a better passer than mediocre. Not his fault passes are dropped (besides throwing torpedoes to the flat which I don't think he does much).
His completion % is padded by the fact 90% of his passes are screens or swing passes at LOS

Just a distant dream for us hawk fans. At least Mark can consistently run. Throws have been inconsistent and some of that might be due to our WRs too.
