Maybe people forget how long and how many missed swings we took at trying to hire a DC this offseason. Rob smith was probably the 15th ranked option . RU seemingly tried hiring just about anyone else and we had to overpay Rob just to get him here and fill the damn position . And we can see why

Who else were they targeting? Everyone alluded to the fact, this was the worst kept secret but outside of Smith who else was realistically on the table?

Another thread someone had posted the entire defensive coaching staff is also loaded with very inexperienced first time coaches.

Get the entire staff out of there I don't care if they hire one of the NJ parochial highschool head coaches at least they want to be big time...it's like these guys are stuck in the "we are Rutgers we can't compete with Oregon, Ohio State, Alabama etc...bring in someone ambitious..

"He’s been uber-micromanaging since birth."

Any you think thats a bad thing for a head coach or ceo? smh Shows where someone is in their profession. Interference is bad. Knowledge to a micro level and oversight is the hallmark of a successful chief executive.

If anything he needs to get back to more involvement but perhaps NIL has taken him away.

With the NIL on track, he should take over the D. It is so clear that players just dont know whrere to be and have never seen that in a GS team.

If you look at the defensive staff's resumes, you'll realize this is an entire staff problem, it goes beyond just Smith. Schiano's quest for familiarity led to an entire staff of inexperienced and unqualified coaches. It's full of promoted analyst and support staff.

If PSU gets to wake up to Franklin being fired, Smith being here past today should cost Greg HIS job. Nothing else to be said
Whoah, Shelby never thought Shelby would live to see the day that YR01 switched to Shelby’s side of the Grifter Stay Or Go dichotomy. Welcome to the truth, good man.

Funny how finally being exposed as a fraud happened on the same day as the No Kings rallies. We should have No Frauds rallies around the state.

Sounds like the same mistake Belichick made at the end in New England and is making now at UNC.

Who’s waiting in the wings?
Doesn’t matter. Get the water boy and we would do better. Didn’t they almost have 10 consecutive 20+ yd plays?

I don’t care- the coaches gave up on the team, school and fans yesterday. Folded up the playbook and went home.

Smith needs to go now but Greg just earned my no competence vote after this game. I don’t really like KC but if I’m AD and President, I hand him the team for the rest of the year.

and it wasn’t just the score- it was the bending over asking for another.

On defense there are a number of inexperienced and unproven position coaches in addition to Smith. Vic Hall is the safeties coach and the safety play has been really bad. All those hires are on GS.

Agreed. Yesterday was more than a loss in all phases of the game. Oregon dramatically exposed what I and others have discussed over the past couple of weeks. This coaching staff Greg assembled is woefully inexperienced. There was minimal room for error. And error happened very early in the season both offensively and defensively. I don’t care what imaginary conversation one of our posters had with the AD. Zinn knows she runs a bigger risk keeping the status quo versus making changes. Not saying Greg is going anywhere. But changes in staff have to be made immediately. Can’t be asking for money from anyone with what was rolled out last night.

I’m assuming Greg takes over as DC if Smith goes? Does Sperber survive?

he's the linebacker coach in addition to being co-DC, so I think, yes. he survives for now
Not exactly a glowing endorsement. Lb’s are not a position group that has excelled. I would give Sperber some leeway. But he is not innocent of blame.

Not sure how much input Greg has on the D, but if he is to survive he needs to take the reins now or never. Waterloo has arrived. The defense hasn’t been good all year.

um - the problem may be both, but without question, the DC is definitely a problem. Whether it fixes the problem or not, Smith has to be canned immediately. A response is needed right now. And there is no chance whatsoever Greg would be fired mid-season. Maybe in the offseason if the season closes out on the same trajectory but not before then. There would be nothing positive for Rutgers in getting rid of him right now. Realistically, it would only make an already tough head coaching job even tougher to sell if he weren’t given the latitude to finish out the season after his history here. We are not PSU. The job doesn’t sell itself. Rather - it’s a career long risk the next guy is taking to come here.

The postgame show at about the 24-minute mark discussed and suggested Harasimiak left because he saw the writing on the wall re: defensive talent level. And that whatever DC we found we'd have ended up in a similar spot because the talent is not there. Is that a recruiting failure caused by bad coach-recruiters? I'd have to ask why are they bad now but not earlier.. we know the answer, NIL+EasyTransfers. We feared this would end up creating a farm system for the monied programs and it has. Big powers can take ours, we can choose from smaller schools talent but only after the big boys have plunked the hidden gems.

Oh.. do not read the above as an excuse for defensive coaching.. because it has been pathetic even if you consider a poor talent level.

Schiano input are you kidding me? He’s been uber-micromanaging since birth. Why do you think it’s so difficult to hire coaches ?
Schiano spent months looking for a Defense Coordinator. Nobody worth his grain of salt would work for him. We “settled” on the worst possible candidate. Greg time has past and his Defensive Coaching abilities are more questionable with every game. Lame duck until we can make a change.

Ok so put a splint on the broken leg! I understand your point and agree but changing the DC is a simple scapegoating of the the true problem! Has and always be!

Schiano failed with epic proportions at Ohio state as DC! Now he looks like a pop warner DC. If you want to win #GREGMUSTGO

It is - but it’s a necessary scapegoating. A reaction / response is needed optically even if it doesn’t fix the problem.

If this season continues down its path he’ll be on the chopping block in the off-season. Getting rid of him right now isn’t in the realistic cards though so it’s probably not worth discussing at the moment. A change at DC might not fix the problem, but not even bothering to try to make a change is going to be an awful look for the program if Purdue drops 40 on us.
