Eh, probably shouldn't have kicked the field goal but the missed conversions didn't impact the game. If he makes it they get within a field goal. If they kick the extra point they still would have been down by 4. The second time they needed to go for two to try to extend the lead to 3 points so a field goal only ties the game.

Actually, I had no problem with the fg attempt (until it was blocked ha ha), or going for 2 in the 3rd quarter.
Kirk disagrees with you on the FG, in hindsight. You can't give PSU a chance at a momentum play with a block. Especially after the first kick was short and you know he has to drive a lower kick. KF trusted his ST coach and realized that was a mistake. He gets a lot if mileage out of trusting his people, though.

You are correct about the first 2pt attempt. Good job

My biggest gripe is taking the ball to start the game. I don’t care if PSU deferred, kick them the ball to the north endzone and let the new qb try to deal with the deafening crowd noise to start the game. Hope for the reverse of what actually happened.

Yes, Kirk admitted in the post game it was a mistake.

Reasons I had no problem with the attempt:
1. Stevens has the leg. The first kick may have been short, but the whistle had blown and it appeared he let up on the kick.
2. If Kirk would have just let time expire, fans would be b*tching because he DIDN’T let Stevens kick it.
3. While the chances for a block are higher the longer it is, it is still a low percentage of actually occurring.
4. Even if blocked, very few are returned for a td. The ball just happened to go straight back and bounce up into a defenders hands.
5. If Stevens had made the kick, it would have been a HUGE momentum play for the Hawks.

Kirk is frequently accused of being too conservative. This time he was aggressive. It just didn’t work out.

Really the only quibble I have is not deferring after winning the toss. Major coaching mistake in my opinion. Penn State has a freshman QB making his first start in a hostile environment…your defense is the strength of the team…you should put the defense out first. I also like to get the ball to start the second half to avoid situations like what happened last night: the opponent scores to end the first half and to start the second.

You kick a FG that shouldn't have been kicked in the place...

Go for 2 when you didn't need to...

C'mon Man, he is very lucky
The first 2 pt conversion was ok because it was late 3rd Qtr and behind by 5 after the TD. The 2 pt conversion chart has the #5 on it because it can extend your lead to 7 pts or bring your 5 pt deficit to only 3 pts and FG away from a tie.

This, and if everything would have went as planned nobody would anything to complain about missing a FG or 2-point play.

Let’s say we kick the extra point in the 3rd quarter to be down 4. A touchdown is needed as a field goal wouldn’t be enough.

And let’s say Iowa gets the ball with less than a minute to play on their own 30, still behind by 4. There will be fans complaining that Kirk didn’t go for 2 in the 3rd. “If we had gone for 2 and made it, all we would need is a field goal to tie. If we missed we would still need a td. Stupid senile Kirk!”

Don’t make sense. These bozos here can’t comprehend.

I hate going for 2 in the 3rd. It has never worked for kirk. There are so many different scoring outcomes left at that point that not having that point can be detrimental. Plus the 2 point play calls were pathetic.
Agree that the play calls were lame vs the actual idea to go for 2.

Anyone who defends this style of play, gaining 245 yds on the ground and over 7yds/carry, is clearly an idiot according to guys eating cheetos on their couch.

good to know.

After the first kick was that short I don't know about trying again. I loath going for two with ple seconds on the6nty of time left.
It was boneheaded call, he owned it. We had :06 on the clock for a 10 yard down and out to make a FG realistic. 66 yards was never realistic, the air was heavy and a SW wind. He took the practice kick after the PSU time out and barely got it to the goal line. When play resumed Stevens tried to kick it lower knowing he didn't have the leg and we saw the worst possible scenario...

Yes, it was realistic. He has the leg. He kicked it through the same goal posts on an almost ten yard longer kick off.

I liked the call. If he made it Kirk would have received praise as not being too conservative and letting our kicker break a record. Nary a negative word would have been said. You don't just judge a play call primarily because of a result.

The only reason people are whining is because of the bizarre result of the play. That type of block which ricocheted off that arm like a missile in the perfect direction, with a then perfect bounce into a PSU guy sprinting for the end zone is something we won't see again.

Questioning they FG attempt is reasonable. There are posters here on both sides.

The overreaction to it isn't reasonable especially after a W. Calling for him to be fired or claiming he's senile is simply KF hate.
It’s not even close to an overreaction. You’re up 10-7 against a team that had done not one thing on offense the entire first half. You’re also asking your kicker who has been very inconsistent this year, to do something that has not been done in the history of college football. And as others have stated to hit a ball that far he’s got to drive it low. Just take a knee at that point and go into the half with the lead. It was a decision that almost cost us the game. And he admitted it.
