I’m very shocked only because of the money. My goodness the amount of money colleges waste lol. Hope they learn not to hand out all these stupid long deals and realize anything can go south on anyone and keep it manageable.

Pegula might have paid it. He created their whole hockey program from scratch. They're not worried about money.

We can only hope the money gets sucked out of that program and they publicly struggle to find another candidate, settle for someone who then helps to relegate them to a 20-35 ranking tier and Rutgers becomes an annual challenge and measuring stick for them

I assume Rhule is their top candidate. Not sure Cignetti would leave for PSU. He probably has SEC schools calling right now.

Supposedly a single donor footed the buyout. Crazy if true!

It’s a rounding error! With TV deal and private equity deal about to close. They will hold the loss on the balance sheet and amortize it for a decade or two.

Schiano is next

Reality says we are losing starters to Louisville. But let’s steal recruits from a program that just stroke a check for $50 million to fire their coach
if they can pay $50 mil to fire their coach don't think they will have a problem retaining recruits and also the $$$ they will have to pay when Matt Rhule is hired

Gotta think Schiano is on their list, no? Especially given his history there?
Wtf are you smoking ? They ain’t hiring a guy with 25% Big10 winning percentage who got fired at his previous couple of jobs.

PSU expects to compete for nattys. Rutgers only expects the team to get to the stadium on time and Grifter Greg does go 1-0 each week in that regard, so he does have that going for him. Time for another extension.

At this point , I don’t think he would be high on their list. I would think Matt Rhule at Nebraska, who played there about 30 years ago would be near the top.

Shame a 5-1 Rutgers can’t take advantage and steal some top local recruits
you never know, maybe a local talent will change their preference, but doubtful if the replacement is on the ball and
uses the firing as proof the Nits are committed to being the very best and won't accept less.
That should keep talent thinking Nit. .

As for me, I'm dumbfounded that they'd fire Franklin so fast after losing to Northwestern, I would have thought they'd start negotiating a lesser buyout , but Franklin does hold all the cards so why should he take less to be dumped like trash.
Frankly I'm amazed at a $50 mil buyout not stopping Franklin from becoming the latest to lose their job over not making their program as good as the fanbase want and expect.
I feel the Penn State powers to be have been thinking about this for a long time and after the Oregon loss , another in a long line of Franklin losing to top programs , losing to an not so hot Northwestern team was the straw that broke the camel's back
Edit: oops the UCLA loss had to make Franklin's support dwindle a lot and 3 straight losses ( once again to a top program and a bottom dweller then one that has no business winning) and put him in line for the unemplyment line despite his buyout .

They should've stuck to their guns and let the season play out before deciding to fire Franklin. Who is going to want to coach at PSU for the money they'll pay? Are donors going to contribute millions more out of loyalty to their alma mater?

From a business perspective, it doesn't look like PSU's athletics department has their stuff together. 4 & 5 star recruits aren't going to go with a program just because of brand recognition. They need trust from the head coach that they're either going to get a) NIL money or b) developed into an NFL draft prospect.

And after seeing at what happened to Franklin, are any coaches going to be confident enough to rebuild PSU from scratch? PSU isn't Ohio State or Alabama. They don't get resources handed to them on a plate like elite programs do from blindly loyal fans.

We'll see how it plays out. But I doubt PSU will be playoff competitive anytime soon after this mess.
