Phil's defense is one of 4 in FBS that hasn't allowed a single point in the 3rd quarter this year

They are 7th in the nation in second half points allowed at 5.0 per half.

They have NOT been nearly as effective in the first half allowing 12.8.

Phil proves over and over that he is one of the best in the country at making adjustments when things aren't working. He's simply able to do more with less by figuring out what buttons to push based on what the opponents are doing and shutting that down. Get to him early because it's going to get really hard as the game goes on.

Interestingly, the offense goes in the opposite direction. They've averaged 17.8 in the first half for 33rd nationally, but only 10.5 in the second half ranking them 83rd in the nation on that metric.

the huge jump in his 2nd year that we hoped for from lester’s offense hasn’t materialized yet. or maybe it has but is masked by kj’s absence

Unfortunately there hasn't been any improvement overall year to date. Statistically it's the same or worse. Passing yards are up, but that's only because they are throwing it more often. Yards per attempt is ranked 105th and they are actually averaging 1/10 of a yard less than last year. Rushing yards are down substantially and they are actually averaging 1.2 yards per attempt less than they did last year. That's a huge drop-off. Part of that has to do with QB runs as MG leads in attempts but is only averaging 2.8 per attempt.

Odd thing about the first/second half differences is that (I think) we have kicked off to start every second half.

Last year the offense was better in the second half.
