I thought they improved some last year, but I’ll admit this year is ugly we’ll be lucky to go to a bowl game

I never said he was a good coach, just that it was worth hiring him to get Dylan. I bet Dylan wants him gone more than anyone right now.

You have to wonder what is going through Dylan’s mind? Family pressure to commit to a “has been” versus a premier program. What would his numbers look like with a culture of excellence in coaching and execution versus this?

Maybe we’ll find out next year.

Football locker rooms are pure echo chambers, especially for the starters and the "in" players. You get grumbling the farther you go down the depth chart, but the starters always love their coaches and fall for their B.S. Dylan is more likely to blame the O.C than his uncle, and behind closed doors, his uncle will say it is scheme, they aren't setting up the run, or the play calling leaves the o-line unsupported and the oline coach has no choice over the plays called. They will say it is windy, that the rb back coach doesn't coach up enough depth, or the rbs aren't hitting the holes, aren't patient enough, or aren't tough enough. Or maybe the crowd is too loud at home..or guys are injured...or this excuse or that...this is why wholesale changes are so rare. It is a surety that the line was recruited to run the ball, to play ball control, with play-action passing and a qb run game being integral parts of the offense. They got Dylan, who is one of the softest qbs in the game, and also a qb who doesn't follow any sort of pocket passing mechanics. He doesn't have a predictable drop, and doesn't throw from a pocket on a consistent basis. I bet the line would SEEM better if a guy would step up and make a throw with timing, but Dylan is young, and under-coached. Great qbs throw before their wr makes a cut, but every pass is thrown once dylan is sure of the route and doesn't throw with anticipation. This means he has to wait for routes to complete, and by then he is sacked. Not to compare him to NFL qbs, but the ball needs to come out in 2-3 seconds to have a consistently throwing offense. You have to throw at the end of your drop, which means has to know where to go with the ball pre-snap, and has to throw with anticipation. He does none of this.

PFF had the offensive line graded ok. Not great but not bad either. Dylan graded poorly and looks like he is taking too long. According to pff the offensive line did better than they appeared.

If Dylan had any wheels and moves our OL wouldn't have to be all conference they would just have to be just good enough. You have a QB that can move around in the pocket it slows down that rush and makes your OL's job a little easier. This is why our future QB's are dual threats and not just pro style QB's. I feel Dana Holgorsen's offense is far better when he has a QB that is mobile a QB who can make all the passes and also run when needed.

I agree, but even if they did 2-3 designed runs/zone reads a game that would take some of the pressure off the line. Even Mahomes has a few designed runs sometimes.

I will say that if trying to keep his uncle here was only to get Dylan than Rhule is an idiot. The amount of good to great QBs that come and go in the portal every year is crazy. While OL is almost as expensive, you have five of them and not as many good prospects every year.

You're right, but that's kind of 20/20 hindsight. Not a lot of people could have predicted the portal would devolve into that over the last 3 years. Matt Rhule didn't even know what the portal was when he agreed to keep uncle Donnie in an attempt to get Dylan. Let alone knew enough about it to be able to predict what it would turn into.

Not really. It was easily predictable as laid out by myself over the last couple of years. Indiana, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, and Miami are the teams taking full advantage of the portal and all are top 10 teams. This was easily foreseeable with competent leadership.

Yeah, and all those coaches had the advantage over Rhule to have been in the college game from the inception of the portal until now.

Not only that, but
  1. Indiana - Cignetti did well in the portal, but also brought over every single stud he had at JMU
  2. Tech & Miami - Just flat out outspending everyone. Nebraska doesn't have that advantage right now
  3. Ole Miss - Kiffin always does well in the portal, don't know much about their money situation. I love Kiffin, but he has still never won anything of significance. If he performed at that same level here, we would run him out of town because he isn't getting to the playoffs.

Holg needs to call a more balanced game. There were times Johnson was gashing them. Didn’t Johnson only have 13 carries and still had 3 tds? Drives me crazy calling 3 pass plays on a first and goal situation

Same fanbase that will be over the moon with 8 wins in Year Three would run Kiffin out of town for not making the playoffs?

People conveniently forget Cignetti’s run with Saban at Bama. He has deep connections with top high school programs all over the country. This really wasn’t some unknown neophyte.

Our play calling in the redzone was questionable at best on one redzone trip against Michigan as well but we don’t know if Dylan audibled in to those plays.

Yes, the same fan base that wants Rhule out right now at 4-1. Our fans still think it is the 90's and that we will win every game after we have been horrible for the last 10 years. I get wanting a great product, but going forward teams are going to lose 1-2 times a year. Football is different now.
