I agree however, this year the Defense is on pace to be the worst in 17yrs and at the very least, 2nd only to one of Ash's years. That doesn' t include the record where we very well may see only 1 BIG win and I'm not sure any longer as Purdue played ND fairly well scoring over 30!

It is a crap shoot as you say, my fear is the better gambles won't roll the dice with he crap offer Rutgers gives them

I feel Greg was a last shot that Hobbs hired because the better gambles seen what was being offered and walked away before serious talks even started.
Lower level coaches that were considered sure bets to get a P-4 HC spot in the future , decided not to risk their future because they felt RU wouldn't give them the support they needed to succeed and felt staying put was a better career move than trying to fix a broken program without being given all the parts needed or receive cheap imitations that might look good but wouldn't do the job needed.
Schiano had to fight to get most of what he felt needed, others probably felt the position wasn't worth the bother and looked elsewhere
Greg wasn't the best available, he was the only one worthwhile to gamble on that had interest.
I feel even now the interest is lacking , so Schiano staying is the best choice ( for now)until Zinn finds a way to support RU in a way to improve its chances to become a real good program and is able to get a HC that a good gamble to make it one
Shelby will sign up for it being only 5 more because he is the greatest con man ever.
Stealing salary is his game, not football.
Shelby predicts he gets his next multi-year extension after his first Top 25 win, which will be in 2029 when the #25s top three QBs are out with injury.

Sort of. Teams were calling out sick for COVID, in our case TXAM did, and thus we took their spot and were among the top replacements considered due to APR.
If you want to complain about losing close games it's one thing but that has to reflect coming back from the absolute disaster Ash left, and then Shea in the first go. We were basically the worst in the power conferences twice, and he had the job of fixing it twice.
Agree 2.0 walked back into a disaster. But that was 6 years ago. The BS cuddling of Schiano is getting old. . His players , his staff , his in game coaching (or lack there of ) , etc. Never moving above a low tier team in the B1G with Schiano. Time for our new AD to start the process.
Greg Schiano's initial contract with Rutgers in 2019 was for eight years, so it would have expired in 2027Year 6.....
Hobbs in 2023 gave Greg a contract extension that will keep him with the university through the 2030 season..
I always felt giving Schiano that 3 year extension was foolish seeing he had 4 years left before contract expired
and , though vastly improved the program from what Ash left, still needed to prove he could make Rutgers a constant winner.
The way I saw it , at the time, was give him a one year extension with the salary boost and not be tied down until 2030 unless he made RU a constant bowl team by 2027. Then in 2027 extend or replace with only having to buy out his 2028 salary
I'm a Greg supporter, but feel he can build a team up from the trash heap, but not convinced he can make RU into a constant Top 25 program and once the program becomes respectable RU fans should be satisfied with being just that.
Top 25 material should be the goal of every RU Fan and if Schiano can't deliver that , thank you for making the program better then you inherited from Ash but good bye because your best isn't reaching the goal we set for you .
The extension he received puts a crimp in letting him go if he doesn't make Rutgers into a top 25 program and change might have to wait until 2029 because Rutgers probably won't eat more than one year's salary.
I hope Greg will prove he can make RU a top 25 program able tro compete with the best, buut have little confidence he can do that even by 2030

From what we have all seen with Greg’s Coaching ability only the very few with blinders on believe we will be a Top 25 team by 2030.
We're a mid tier team the past few years if you look at the standings, with mid tier investment.
In year 6 of 1.0 we were top half of the BE- but in a large sense, in that era, many other programs were not putting in the investment we were in that conference in football.
We are a bottom feeder and will struggle to win 1 conference game this year. Schiano dead man walking . He can’t be gone soon enough

This guy is a class act. Good human, awesome reprentatitive , solid eye for talant... BUT a lousy game day coach who is stubborn conservative and can't adjust.
He loses way too many games he should win.
I'm thrilled we're respectable. That shouldn't be confused with acceptable. He has more than enough resources to win these games. Nobody is expecting him to beat Oregon, ohio state, or psu.
I think if you see this board when we play those teams, or even have beaten good teams (like UW or VT x2) there's always an excuse as to why it isn't so good.
It's a NJ cultural thing to just hate on everything. And it is so prevalent that people forget the abject disaster of Flood and Ash.
Newsflash. VT was not good the last 2 years. UW was a bit better last year, but not great. It's a cultural thing some older RU fans to continually excuse mediocre to subpar coaching.
They were a bowl team both times as was Washington as were others like Northwestern when we beat them. And, when the day comes that it is a ranked team, it will be: they fell out of the rankings. After all we saw this with USF back in the day.
I'm also younger than most people here, which is kind of interesting considering I never knew the Shea era or those before it but I was so put off by 78-0 that I'm not buying into the Leipold/Sanders etc hype. That's what kind of puzzling to me- the people who sat through much worse than I did have no issue with gambling on another Ash or Flood situation.
It's about beating an Iowa, Illinois last year, or Washington this year. Not some mediocre bowl team that made it with 6 or 7 crappy wins
You say that and then the goal post will move, even if not yours personally. Idk how many times I heard "he didn't beat a winning team!" until it happened a few times a season. Then it was "but not a name team!" Or even back in the day, didn't beat Cincy, and then we did, but it wasn't as good! But I'll hold you to it with Washington.
7-13 in the B1G Conference games over the last 2 and a half seasons is not mid tier in any world. Last season was ok with 4 wins (the schedule was our most favorable in years and we still blew it against bad teams like UCLA and Wisconsin). The team has regressed noticeably on Defense and even worse on Special Teams. Much work is needed to get even close to mid tier in the B1G.
I actually think the defense performed better the past 2 games than versus the MAC teams. Let's see what happens- as we saw yesterday there's no guarantees!
