I'm talking last possession, final drive and it's Iowa’s ball and they are behind.

Your scenario is just the opposite.

So it's 50/50 based on the scenario.

You've not proved that one score is better over these 2 scenarios to win both.
You're leaving out the part where you qualified the team down 10-7, as having the worst ranked offense in the FBS, which I'm not sure how is relevant in the first place.

I don't have to prove one scenario better. My point was that I feel a lot more confident that Iowa is going to win when it's 7-7 in the 2nd Q vs 21-21. You responded with different scenario, which I countered

I'd rather win 38-28 than 20-10.

I would feel much more comfortable with a 7-7 game in the 2nd Q, compared to a 21-21 game.

Too much of my time got wasted correcting dumbasses. And honestly, I would assume the reasoning for a 7-7 preference is obvious. Have you guys watched Iowa football in the last 27 years?

I have a hard time believing anyone who says they feel more comfortable with a 21-21 game in the 2nd Q is being honest with themselves, or has a clue how football works. I have a hard time believing that their entertainment needs are not forming that argument.

People have said they are more comfortable in a 21-21 game because they are confident PP will make the proper adjustments. (Easy to say after the way that game went down, btw).

But there is no need for adjustments from PP if the D has only given up 7. Even with confidence in PP's adjustments, having only given up 7 would be a situation that gives me much more reason to believe that the D is going to do its thing in the game.

Only having given up 7 is a scenario where the D will probably be able to sink its teeth into the game. Once that happens, especially with good special teams, it presents many possible ways to win, even with next to zero offensive production.

We saw that Fri. Once the D got its teeth into to the game, it was Iowa's game. It just wasn't as obvious that that was going to happen as it would have been in a 7-7 game.

Basically, Iowa has more control over a 7-7 game, than they do at 21-21.

There are a lot more ways for Iowa to win lower scoring games. Whereas, higher scoring games require the offense to outscore people, even given defensive adjustments.

The below link gives additional commentary on the advantages of lower scoring games for Iowa, for those who haven't been paying attention for 27 years. Post #66 in the link

Post in thread 'This is the most entertained I have been watching an Iowa game since the days of Nate Stanley…' https://www.on3.com/boards/threads/this-is-the-most-entertained-i-have-been-watching-an-iowa-game-since-the-days-of-nate-stanley….8290024/post-171363599
The last two years we would have lost this game......most likely something like 24-10. We at least have a pulse on offense and the QB is showing more promise. RB health worries me a bit.

Indiana game will become more of a benchmark for this year's team.

The defense that he has such confidence in to hold a lead late sure didn’t work out so well against Kentucky and Missouri in bowl games, last year vs. Iowa State, etc. Note that all 3 of those games could have been won if the OFFENSE had been able to pick up a late first down or two, or put together a late scoring drive. There were also games like Minnesota in ‘23 and Iowa State this year where the Hawks had plenty of time to drive into position for a game winning/tying field goal attempt (in the Minnesota game they only needed 15-20 yards), but failed to move the ball. There are others…these are just the ones off the top of my head.

It works both ways. Unfortunately some folks don’t understand that.
If you're referring to me, I'm not sure what all of this has anything to do with.

I stated that I'm more confident a team that has given up 7 can hold a lead vs a team that has given up 21. I'm not sure how that can be refuted.

What is that I don't understand? All I've said is that I feel more confident in the 7-7 situation than 21-21 situation. Obviously Iowa can win in the 21-21 situation. It just happened.

Yes, winning does work both ways. That's my point here.

I made the mistake of not putting the 21-21 vs 7-7 question in poll form.

Amongst six pages of commentary, redirecting, and alternate scenarios, a grand total of THREE posters have actually come out and said they feel more confident Iowa is going to win when it's 21-21. All of them convieniently used the PP adjustment logic after the game had already played out.

Again, I happen to feel quite more confident when it's 7-7. I guess I also made the mistake of assuming that you guys were capable of being honest, and capable of having a clue what it is you're actually watching in these games. Because I assumed pretty much everyone would simply answer that their confidence level is higher in the 7-7 scenario.

If that had actually happened, my point would have been that fans have been out of line to have given the Iowa program and coach such a hard time.

Yes, winning does "work both ways". So why has offense been such a priority and complaint of the fans?

And, I know this is asking a lot, but the honest ones might have even taken the line of reasoning to show that Iowa fans have been blessed to have had the defense and special teams that they've had, regardless of what the offenses have looked like.

The ones who have a clue understand that defense and special teams are always the most important and are more than enough to be thankful for, as fans. Because guess what has led to the winning.

I'd take an elite defense and special teams with zero offense, over a good offense with an above average defense, every day of the week. I'd feel more confident at 7-7 in the 2nd Q vs 21-21, every day of the week.

But again, that's not really my point. My point is that the level of fan complaint about Iowa football has not been warranted all along. Fans have been wrong to behave they way they have.

Please know, folks, that my commentary is almost always about fans. People seem to misunderstand what I'm trying to say a lot. If folks can remember that I'm almost always talking /making a point about fans, that should clear up a lot of confusion, agree with me or not

You keep talking about our D getting their teeth into a game. And you’re right against the Nebraska’s, Minnesota’s, NW’s. But in our really successful years where we won legit bowl games, beating LSU, South Carolina, Florida, etc we also were able to score points. We haven’t been competitive against a top 25 team since that Penn State game that got us up to number 2 in the rankings. It’s been blow out city. Our defense played incredible against Michigan in the B1G championship and we still got blown out. We lost the 1 game we had a chance to make the playoffs against M St because we scored 1 touchdown.
So, 21-21 or 7-7?

Indiana very well could be the most difficult game on our schedule. Have to make their QB hold onto the ball longer when he wants to get it out quick, and we have to make him get it out quick when he wants to hold onto it longer. We need to find a way to disrupt his rhythm.

Has nothing to do with the comparison I made.

But since you brought it up...ISU ran a wheel route vs Castro when Iowa happened to be in "man" coverage.

Iowa is a notorious "zone" team. So no, PP's tendencies were not used against him
Words straight from Castro's mouth post game. They knew PP's defense for the play and suckered Iowa.

Understand what?

Do you "feel" more confident Iowa will win when it's 21-21 in the 2nd Q, or 7-7? That's my entire question. Not sure what you don't like about it.

I happen to "feel" much more confident at 7-7. Not sure what you don't like about it

And you also think anyone who is more confident with 21-21 is clueless and doesn’t know football. You dismissed the reasoning of those who said 21-21. You also called others dumb*sses. It’s not that other people don’t like that you prefer 7-7. It’s your arrogant and condescending attitude, and your belief that you are right and anyone who disagrees is wrong.

I reject your so-called “simple” question because they are arbitrary numbers. Why not 17-17, 10-10, 20-17, or 10-7? Your numbers are meaningless as there is no context. 21-21 games can sometimes be more of a defensive battle than 7-7.

How were these points scored? Were there any defensive or special team scores, or directly the result of a defensive or special team play? Any “fluke”-type play that likely won’t recur? What about penalties? Turnovers? Have they had an effect? Weather? Field conditions? Any key injuries that could effect the outcome? Is “your” team the home or visitor?

Is one team better at halftime adjustments? Is one a strong starter but doesn’t finish well? Is one stronger in the 4th quarter? Does one team tend to win close games more often than the other? Has one team been on a hot streak? Is one in a slump?

Your so-called “simple” question is without merit and cannot be answered without knowing the many variables involved. No two 21-21 or 7-7 situations are the same. It’s not “one size fits all”.

You are more comfortable with 7-7. Fine. That’s your OPINION and you are entitled to it. It doesn’t make you right. Or more knowledgeable about football. And it doesn’t make those who have different OPINIONS wrong, clueless, or a dumb*ss.

Because had the offense pulled it's weight, we would have been a title contender in 2021, 2-3 more wins in 2022, and could have been a contender in 2023. The offense was abysmal
This overall complaint has already been throughly disarmed in post #136.

But given the new specifics you mention here are easily contested.....

I assume by title contender you mean big ten. You honestly think a better offense in '21 would have beaten a team that was proven to have played the game with an unfair competitive advantage? Idk, I guess there's a chance. But not likely at all. Why the level of complaining?

Why the level of complaining after wins, and during a season that landed the Hawks in the conference championship game? Why the complaining in previous seasons that sported offenses ranked in the 60's and 70's?

As for '22, I assume you've included the Nebraska game, as you alluded to 2/3 games. I just don't see that game as an example for any type of narrative. Iowa's only offensive weapon (LaPorta) was out. And the Hawks lost their best/most valuable defensive player and diffence making punt returner (DeJean) early in the game. But most importantly, Iowa lost their qb in-game, and had to go to an unrepped backup. That is the toughest game circumstance a football team can encounter. With unrepped backup qb's, offenses have a level of rhythm that can't even execute snaps. That game was the 2nd time that season it resulted in a lost fumble, and you see it around football all the time.

To me, it's completely silly to try to include the Nebraska game as part of any narrative. To others, maybe not so much. For example, that fact that LaPorta was the only offensive weapon might say something about the offense. But at the very least, the specifics of the Nebraska game, to at least some degree, diminish the strength of the "better offense" hypothetical.

As for '23, you really think Iowa would have beaten the national championship with a better offense? I would say maybe, at best. So again, why the level of complaining over a "maybe, at best"?

And again, why all the complaining after wins during a season ('23) that landed the Hawks in the conference championship game? The "could have" complaint doesn't account for in-season complaining.

And even in hindsight, the complaining has been about maybe 1or 2 more wins, total, over 3 seasons? Something doesn't add up. Garbage never does. Not to mention the inherent unwarrantedness of hindsight complaints. What's the point?

Look, the main point here is that Iowa football and its coach take way too much crap. I'm not sure that can be refuted. I can think of very few coaches as good as KF, that have taken as much crap.

Of course, I don't think any type crap from the fans, to that level, is ever warranted. Fans might say the offense "deserved" the criticism. But they fail to realize there’s more to it than whether the offense sucked or not. Everyone can see the offense sucked. So whether the criticism is "deserved", or not, it is always wrong behavior from fans. Multiplying negativity in the community only makes it potentially harder for Iowa to win.

Fans can do better, and I hope they do

I "dismissed" the logic given for 21-21 (PP adjustments), as LESS of a reason to be confident in how the defense will perform the rest of the game, THAN if the D had only given up 7.

The question was pretty straightforward and relevant. Given I posted it when the game was actually 21-21, that score couldn't be any less "arbitrary". That WAS the question. AT THE TIME of posting, would fans have felt more comfortable with a 7-7 tie? You can pick any tie score lower than 21-21. To me, they are all more confident spots than 21-21.

Of course, nobody decided to argue for 21-21 until after Iowa won. So the real time question turned into, "IN GENERAL, do you feel more confident Iowa is going win when it's 21-21 in the 2nd Q, or when its 7-7." This board will be open 24/7, if at some point you decide you want to make the case for 21-21.

But you are right, I have no idea how anyone who has a clue, and is honest with himself, can say he is more comfortable with Iowa in the 21-21 scenario
