Some Fun Iowa Defense Factoids

The first quarter vs Rutgers was rough, and this is not the elite defense of 2022 or 2023, but for those of you claiming that the Iowa defense is significantly down this year:

Iowa is one of only 5 teams who have played 4 games and not allowed any 3rd quarter points this year, and they are 4th in the country in second half points allowed at just 3.3 per game. A testament to Phil's ability to adjust on the fly.

They are tied for 9th in rushing yards allowed per attempt at 2.3 yards per play.

They are currently tied for 10th at 4.1 yards allowed per play.

They are 24th in scoring defense at 17.0 per game.

Doesn't mean they won't get throttled by Indiana this week because Indiana is really good, but it won't be because they aren't facing a high quality defense.

It would probably have to be 2012 Penn St, down 38-0 in the 4th until two late TDs.

2021 Purdue might be close, it was a 10 point game in the 4th but they tacked one on to win by 17.

This is simply wrong. These are absolute stats with relative rankings. Iowa is in the minority of teams in the country having played 2 true P4 road contests. You think all of these other teams are playing elite offenses in these first 4 games?

Rutgers has some weapons on offense. The QB is talented and they have at least one stud WR. They're going to score points on a lot of good teams. I was impressed with the D in the 2nd half.

That Purdue game was brutal. Iowa came in at 6-0 having just beaten PSU. We already knew the offense was bad but then O'Connell and freaking David Bell, the Iowa killer absolutely tore up the defense. I was never so happy to see a guy finally graduate.

Indiana averaged 559 yards and 49 points coming into the game. Iowa allowed 337 yards and 20 points. The defense still hasn't given up a single point in the 3rd quarter this year and is only one of 5 teams in the country to share that statistic. On the flipside, the Iowa offense is ranked 100th in the country in 3rd quarter scoring.
