I still can't believe we lost to those bottom feeders last year.
They looked lost as a team and thats playing marginal talent teams
That was the weirdest game of the year. Complete role reversal on both sides of the ball. Iowa couldn't run the ball at all and then the defense couldn't stop the worst rushing attack in the Big10.

So basically every Iowa game played in the Rose Bowl that I remember.
He was a bad hire by UCLA, way over his head. You could see that last year at Big Ten Media Days. It iill be interesting to see who they hire next.

UCLA football is a tough sell. Yeah, great school with a beautiful campus. But the football setup is terrible. Home field is nowhere near campus so there's no gameday vibe. They drew 31,000 for their last game in a metro of 18 Million people.
To make matters worse they cut ties with a good share of their rivalries. No Stanford, Cal, ASU Arizona, Wazzu or Oregon St. They are not a natural fit with the B1G.
Kirk loves giving charity wins to first-year coaches.
The hire was hot garbage and then they threw gasoline and a match on it with Nico.
Good point on Nico. If there is anyone in his camp with a brain, they'd have to be thinking "man we screwed the pooch on that one".
maybe we should get him on staff, he would be a good recruiter for the skill positions where we have no skills
It's about time. UCLA loses to New Mexico 35-10 with a pitiful 31,000 people in the Rose Bowl after accomplishing nothing else, you deserve to be fired. How can UCLA ever be so bad? How can UCLA ever be so irrelevant, not only nationally but right there in Southern California? A change HAD to be made.
Of course, we do remember that UCLA beat the Hawkeyes in the Rose Bowl last season . . .
The govt wants to fine UCLA 1 billion for antisemitism. If that happens I wonder if they drop athletics.
They won 4 of their last 6 so they had some positive momentum and it was only his first year as HC.
I do and not a chance. Campbell has it good where he is. He's not an LA guy and UCLA is not a good football job despite how fine the school is.You kid. But...?
Campbell is not going to take the UCLA job, and why would he? They are broke, so they do not have the funds to offer $7 or $8 million. It's LA not the midwest, and why would he leave a job where he is calling the shots and can get to the playoffs. He may leave in the future, but he is at the point where he can be choose about the job, and will wait for the perfect job to open.
I agree that Campbell has done a good job. I have no idea what job he wants, but Notre Dame won't tolerate many losses and they already have two. That said, the rest of ND schedule is cake (with possible exception of USC).
I honestly wasn't sure what his coaching career looked like. I didn't know he was the coach there til iowa played them last year. Thought I'd missed something and he was climbing up the ranks. But he came back to his alma after the NFL as special/grad assistant then did a year at Texas Tech for one season and coached the position he was really good at and played professionally? Then right back to UCLA to keep doing that?
Honestly I don't think he would have been a candidate at any major conference program EXCEPT UCLA. So it's not really shocking it didn't work out. Maybe he goes down a rung and becomes a great coordinator somewhere (which he skipped over) and later does became a good head coach.
Being good at a college and later joining the coaching staff as a positional coach doesn't inherently mean you should automatically be the head coach there when it opens. It doesn't disqualify you either, but you've got to be some kind of lucky hire if basically your entire college playing and coaching is all at the same place and you weren't even near the top of the ranks there. Working on different staffs gives different perspectives and diversifies your skill set and makes you a more seasoned candidate. An alumni hire is great, but that should be the hook to tip the scales in your favor if he's in-demand, not the sole reason to put him ahead of other candidates with head coaching or coordinator experience.

Stop it. Freeman got them to the national championship last year. He’s very well liked and respected. Lost 2 games to 2 good teams. He’s not going anywhere.
As much as I don’t like it, Campbell is very much cut from the same mold as Kirk. I don’t see him leaving Iowa State. And frankly, why should he? He’s going to get paid what 5-6 million a year, that is basically guaranteed, until he decides to hang it up with very little pressure. Add to that, they’re going to have a chance to win the conference basically every year because it’s so bad.
Don’t think they beat anyone with a pulse though, which includes the 3 point pillow fight win over Iowa.
I agree they had a very short lease on him, so I am guessing there may be more to it…
Matt Campbell is not a complacent person. I doubt Campbell is the type that would be complacent playing at the MAC level which is the big 12. He has confidence and I’m sure that if the right BIG or SEC gig came up he’d move. I doubt he would pass on Michigan if came open and offered. Notre Dame would be a shoe in. If Bama came calling he would be crazy not to jump. But he doesn’t seem like a Bama guy. Wisconsin would be an interesting take. The ceiling is exponentially higher in Madison than Ames. MC is a competitive guy so if Wisconsin came calling he would go there to win a national title. He wouldn’t have the mentality of sustaining a middling BIG team. He would go to build upon a program that is potentially a sleeping giant. Big fan base only school in a state with a much larger population. Much bigger Market than north Polk county etc. also better schools for his kids (Secondary Catholic schools don’t exist in Story County)
Neon Sanders + LA would be a near perfect match - for both. Sanders’ personality and style fits the SoCal / Hollywood culture. UCLA football would get a huge recruiting boost to jump start their deathbed program.
You make good points. Deion Sanders is not a well-liked dude here in SoCal (at least from what I hear in general discussion with normal people and talk radio people) BUT I could see that immediately change in the eyes of UCLA fans and their administration.
I think of he were in LA people would love him (well, UCLA fans).
I could picture this. Prime Time will be coaching in the SEC or Big Ten within 2 years. He's too big of a football name/personality to stay in a mid-major conference for long.
(No, it won't be Iowa)
