Mentioned this in the tv ratings thread. OSU president floating a trial balloon with regards to the next tv deal. Never thought anyone would get kicked out of the B10 but did see potentially a change similar to what was seen in the ACC.

Slides show viewership tiers of schools in each conference.

From an article:

Ohio State President Ted Carter “left open the possibility of changes to Big Ten Conference schools’ revenue-sharing arrangements and his own institution’s approach to how its athletics department is funded,” according to Steve Berkowitz of USA TODAY. When asked whether he foresaw the Big Ten adopting an unbalanced revenue-sharing model similar to the one in the ACC, given the television draws of OSU and Michigan, Carter said, “I don’t want to get into the type of conversations that are happening inside the Big Ten.” He added, “I will say that there’s only a couple of schools that really represent the biggest brands in the Big Ten, and you can see that by the TV viewership.” Asked whether that should translate into something different in terms of revenue share, he said, “It doesn’t matter what Ted Carter thinks. I think that’s going to be a conversation that will be had over time.” Carter said that OSU had “around” $325M in athletics revenue for FY 2024-25 and that the department “operated at a surplus.” Carter added that OSU “is ’committed to maintaining’ its current number of sports” and has “undertaken a number of initiatives aimed at increasing revenue.” He said that the goal is for the department to “remain self-sufficient.” Carter: “At some point there’s only so many things you can do to generate additional revenue” (

Why would B1G schools vote to approve this???
Survival...sometimes it better to take less then to lose out completely. There is a real fear that a group of top schools could break off and create a super conference. They know the networks are paying big money for the big name games and the rest is filler.

Honestly, I wish the top football programs would just do it and get it over with so the rest of the football bottom-feeders (such as my favorite team) can start setting up their own football universe...

ETA: Rutgers95 is probably saying "Not this S again." I should keep my irrational cynicism to myself...

posting the full graphic from the X post above:

A lot of 0's for ACC and Big 12.
Wonder if there will be the implementation of a true salary cap on NIL (does it exit now, and is it enforceable) or a revenue cap. How will schools like Vanderbilt that is making noise in the SEC ever rise up if the rich keep getting richer. And wondering how the cutoff for the B1G was "2" and not "3". And Colorado may be a flash in the pan because Prime is there now. What about when he leaves.
Also, have to laugh at Syracuse, but that is tempered by RU being in the red zone.

The cap is that 20.5M area that schools can spend on NIL for all their sports. It's supposed to go up each year as some share of revenue iirc. I'm guessing it's checked by that 3rd party clearing house that also verifies the "legitimacy" of outside the school NIL deals.

The potential is always here because of the market but you need some overachievement. Mediocre or middling isn't going to push up viewership. You have the market and you have plenty of big brands to catch attention but the last piece of above average or higher achievement is necessary.

I am not a fan of it and hope it never happens but unfortunately the quest for more money never seems to end.

But is it really survival? The schools who will be seeking to have a bigger share are likely already making money off their programs and therefore are seeking to increase both their profits as well as competitive advantage. The schools who will asked to take a pay-cut or lesser share are likely in the red with regards to their programs and will likely see a decrease in revenue as well as lowering their competitive advantage, The competitive gap will get even wider and eventually the top schools will be lured away by the greed of even higher revenue potential of super conference anyway.

This is all going to end up as a Super Conference. There is no strong central governing body to be guardian over maintaining competitive balance as well as too much money and greed involved. However not sure how that will end up long term as a Super Conference will essentially be another version of the NFL.

So they force you to upgrade your facilities and then cut your share? I snese there will be lawsuits about this . Especially since it involves public universities.
