St. Joe’s basketball coach, Billy Lange leaves to become an assistant coach with the Knicks.

So late???

Reminds me a little of Hafley leaving the head coaching job at BC for the Packers.
Guess that means future is with pro ball.

Curious what this means for Derek Simpson. Fire away all! ;-).

Not sure what to make of Steve Donahue. Certainly experienced. Good hire at this late moment? Very up and down but judging from history at Penn certainly knows the territory.

Would be funny if Simpson transferred back to Rutgers. The debates between you and the rest of the board would be epic!

We could do a lot worse.
Lol!
He’s free to transfer right?
Step right in. Could use his speed, handle, defense and foul shooting.
You never know!!
Allow other guard to get some muscle.

In March of this year Donahue was fired from Penn he was 131-130 in 9 seasons Made the Dance 1 time in those 9 years. His last two years there produced a 19-37 record
St.Joe's hired him as an assistant in May
Before Penn He was BC's HC for 4 years and compiled a 54–76 record. Also failed to reach the NCAA tournament while he was there .

To be fair he lead Cornell to consecutive seasons of 16-12, 22-6, 21-10 and 29-5 including three consecutive NCAA bids and once to the Sweet 16. At Cornell!

He also took Penn to the NCAA’s with a 24-9 year.

He did go 21-13 one year with BC.

Although he had his fair share of bad years, he had some very good to great years as well.

I think considering the circumstances a pretty decent hire.

I do wonder what lead to Lange leaving now. Seems like an odd move. Wonder if argument or salary dispute or something else.

Even in a vacuum, it's hard to say no to an NBA job when you're in the A-10. Factor in that he was likely on the hot seat heading into this season, with a roster that is definitely a downgrade from last year, it made sense. I thought he was a potential parachute candidate back in March during the prime carousel season, but yeah the timing is very odd.

He might be a good hire, but his overall performance since leaving Cornell doesn't inspire confidence

Donahue is the interim HC. He will keep the roster in tact this year, then SJU will hire a new staff next year. Guess it still could be him, but my guess is they go younger.

Couple of my friends who are SJU alum and still follow closely said Donahue is a better game coach than Lange.

Steve Donahue is permanent not interim according to this
>No interim tag, nothing temporary about it. Donahue was fired by Penn, brought in by Lange to be an assistant, and now he’s a head coach once again, at a better program than the one he just coached. It’s funny how the world works sometimes. Call it “failing upward” if you will, but you can do a lot worse than Steve Donahue as an immediate and stabilizing presence. He’s a local guy with 25 years of head coaching experience, not even counting the 10 he spent as an assistant on Fran Dunphy’s staff.
Donahue had four winning seasons during nine years with the Quakers. It’s been a minute since he’s coached a good team. But you never know. Sport works in mysterious ways. Perhaps this has a goofy galvanizing effect as the players rally around their new coach and each other after watching Lange forsake them for the Nova Knicks. What’s most quirky, perhaps, is that you have four of the six Big 5 coaches now in their first year with their new teams. That’s Donahue, Fran McCaffery, Darris Nichols, and Kevin Willard. Adam Fisher is on his third Temple season and the dean of Big 5 hoops is Drexel’s Zach Spiker, who enters his 10th with the dragons.<
