I'm not sure how much difference, if any, it would have made thus far to have a tall WR on the field, but with Vander Zee out, I thought we might see Dayton Howard get some PT. So far, though, he's been MIA, despite being on the most recent two-deeps. I've not heard any reports about injury or suspension.

Receivers aren't great, but they aren't the primary issue. Not by a long shot.

This offense may be too complicated for the average college football player. Gill and Vander Zee picked it up quickly during fall camp last year, but others struggle. We heard that last year about Wetjen, and Gronowski had to redirect Phillips at least twice yesterday after he lined up wrong.

Is he small and can get separation like our current WR’s?

I don’t understand this…that was always the excuse with Brian.

The defense always knew/knows what the play is but our players can’t figure it out?

It’s different now. Brian’s problems came after O’Keefe retired and he tried to simplify things. Lester is trying to install a pro offense.

Both of these can be true:
1. It doesn’t matter who we have in at WR (IE Randy Moss).
2. We have had the worst WR corps in the BigTen for many years now…

Sam Philips looks like another Seth Andersen, portal pick up - neither guy excites me and yes, I realize he had a nice return against mighty Albany. How can our program do so well at recruiting RBs but do so bad at recruiting WRs? I realize the HS studs don’t want anything to do with our program right now, but you’d think we’d get lucky every now and again. Supposedly all our WRs look great every Spring though…LOL.

This is accurate. Lester and his Shanahan offense are as complicated as it gets. If nobody else is running it at the college level, you might wonder why not. Or you might already know--it's WAY too damn complicated.

A fella named Albert Einstein said, "Everything should be made as simple as possible." I guess Lester doesn't know that or doesn't agree with it. But the facts on the field speak loud and clear: Einstein was smarter than Tim Lester and Kirk Ferentz, if you can imagine that . . .

It seems blocking ability was the primary consideration in our WR recruiting for some time. We have tended to go small as well.
It's not working for the passing game.

Along with the absence of overt swag post-DJK, to continue the culture fit of course.

From my very uninformed seat, Lester was far too multiple for my liking, Saturday.

Give ISU some credit, as they run a very unique D.

But hopefully this team can learn who they are and how to win, quickly

We saw some positive things @ ISU. I think we still have more in the bag for Rutgers. @Rutgers is going to be a very important game for this season.

Coaches have been saying they're running the Shanahan offense and nobody else in college is doing it... Maybe there's a reason for that

It's a shock that Dayton Howard, the 0 star recruit who didn't have a single college scholarship offer (not even FCS) other than Iowa has been MIA for a Big 10 school? He's a glorified walk-on who had no business coming to Iowa in the first place. For fans to expect a guy like that to contribute is not realistic.

I honestly wish our passing game would resemble a video game. Every receiver has a set route, regardless of defense. Just run that route hard and crisp.

Let Mark decide where to go with it based on what he is seeing.

not sure why everyone thinks #15 is a huge difference maker lol, he constantly got manhandled on routes last year & the play everyone refers to him as leaping for the ball was him coming off the ground about 6 or 7 inches lol, what did he finish the season with last year 20 catches & 250 yards lolololololol

Every year

Iowa is always vanilla in the OOC portion
Only to see the offense go deeper into a shell for conference games.

What we’ve seen the last two weeks is it. This is the offense this year.

I've mentioned him and some others. For some reason Kirk and Lester are trying to make KJ Parker a star. Howard has shown much more and yet he is being treated like a red-headed stepchild.

You're right. There is, which I explained earlier in this thread. But here's the gist: It's too damn complicated.

While I'm not aware of any updates regarding the first two games, Howard got snaps against UMass and snagged two receptions. Maybe we'll see more of him at Rutgers.

My memory of him from 24/25 is that he has hands as good as if not better than some of the shorter receivers. I'm not asking for him to be a full time starter, but yeah, I think Rutgers would be a game for the coaches to give him a chance to show what he can do. It'll never happen, but it would be fun to see him and VanderZee (after he recovers) on the field at the same time so us rank amateurs could make a comparison.

100%. To all of a sudden expect the so call passing game to click at some point is wasting their time. Kirk is going to do exactly as you said Friday night. Dude has zero riverboat gambler in him.

It is amusing hearing the gurus on here every year tell everyone during the first few games that they haven't opened up the playbook yet or are playing it totally vanilla so as not to give some future opponent anything to work with. Then everyone finds out that this is it, and this is all they can do.
