Our AD is in a tough spot. Forcing out a guy like KFz would be controversial.Talking him into retirement would take some mastery. Letting him stick around as long as he wants could inflict some (further) damage on the football program.

What should her strategy be? What do you think it will be?

Unless the wheels fall off (4 wins or less) I can't see her dismissing him, esp with that buyout.

Kirk will not step away and I'm not sure you can terminate him and then hire a good enough coach. This is a whole different ballgame than basketball

This. Beth can’t fire Kirk. Kirk quits when he wants to. If he cares about the Iowa program, he’ll retire at the end of the year.

So, it'll take a nudge from Mary? "Kirk, you look tired. It might be time". I don't see any other way. His "punch the clock" mentality will have him coming back until he's physically unable.

Clearly Goetz can't fire him. But does she have a conversation? Drop some hints?

To a lesser extent, it Reminds me of Joe Pa’s final years (pre scandal) - hard to part ways with a coach that’s been such a part of a successful run. Sometimes you have to pull the Bandaid off, but unless there is a scandal…KF will go out on his terms. I really, really hope he is not grooming Fitz (behind closed doors) to take over the reigns though…😬

Agree with this mostly. I do think if we turn in losing records this year and next, which is entirely possible given our schedule, she'll be in a better position to encourage him into retirement in a way where it's pretty much forced but will never be presented that way. It will absolutely be positioned as KF going out on his own terms, whenever it happens. At least she has the toughness to actually do something about it, unlike Gary "The Human Lapel Pin" Barta.

It would take a handful of big donors to turn on him and offer to help with the buyout which is somewhere around $30M. So, is she taking the temperature of big donors to see who's willing to pony up?

Beth should call Kirk into her office and say:

"Coach, Iowa should have had a strong AD who said this to you 20 years ago:

Stay out of your Offensive Coordinator's way. Period. You may work with the o-line if you want. That's it. Otherwise, your OC 100% runs this offense. You stay out of it. You have proven beyond all doubt that you don't know how to run a passing game nor a quarterback room. Now get the hell out of my office."

If BG actually has to fire KF, that is completely on him. His coaching any seasons beyond this one is simply holding the program hostage. For someone with a reputation of honor and integrity, he should have enough to step away without any friction.

I am hoping that KF hangs it up after this season, but if he doesn’t, it is BG’s duty to have a conversation with him about what she would expect going forward in order for him to continue leading the football program.

Football is his life, purpose, and only hobby. Just like JoePa, I have trouble believing he’ll ever walk away on his own. We’ve all worked with the people that work way too long because they don’t know what to do with themselves. That’s Kirk

“No, I’m not going to fire you. Like I said, you can live out your contract and we will support you throughout, but, I think it’s time to consider allowing us to make a head coaching change.” And then throw some statistics at him - Such as being winless in the last 10 against ranked teams. Fan unrest. Horrible offense that’s seeing almost no improvement.

If we have 2 years of sub .500 football I do believe the money would be found to get him gone. The fanbase is already sick and tired of this ****. You think two years of dumpster fire football won’t bring change?

If this is true, it's even more damning that he refuses to adapt to how the game has evolved instead of running the same stuff from 20+ years ago wondering why it doesn't work anymore.

This is my worry as well. I think it’s gonna get ugly. Look how he dug his heels in with his dipshit son. That was disgusting.

This is a little different than the old dude in the office who continues to take up space because he hates his wife, so he's given less and less responsibility so things don't get f'd up. KF is paid an insane amount of money to run a gagillion-dollar business. He's not the owner of Iowa football and not untouchable. The football program should have big goals....goals that obviously are not going to be reached under the current regime. Putting off moving the program forward does nobody any good (except KF).

I just want to be in the discussion. I think that time is over with Kirk at the helm. I think the warning shot to Kirk was when Beth fired Brian. I think that was giving him time to get the offense in order, and that hasn’t happened. I expect she would give him a few seasons to put it together. If we don’t see a big improvement on offense this year I think he is done.

It’s too early to bury this season but allowing Kirk to retire on his terms is absolutely unacceptable.

Kirk walks into Beth’s office on Monday and says he has thought about it, says he still has the passion and demands a 7 year extension.

According to the “on his own terms” idiots, Goetz has no choice, she must extend Ferentz to 2036. Ridiculous.
