BTN is killing viewership

Thanks for finding that. I'm not sure if sportsmediawatch will be posting those tables with the ratings again. Last year, it seemed like he reluctantly did, as he was planning on phasing it out, so not sure about this year. This was the other site I found last year but didn't get a chance to look for it again. Hopefully, they keep on updating. Nonetheless, I'll still post whatever tweets and articles and such that I come across that provide ratings.

C'mon.. stop comparing broadcast TV station games to cable games. Not only are there different possible audience numbers but the ratings are calculated differently.

google AI:

Yes, TV ratings are calculated differently for broadcast and cable programs, though Nielsen is the primary measurement company for both, the data gathering varies. Broadcast networks have larger, more established audience segments and are more likely to have shows with a significant live audience, while cable channels often cater to more niche interests and may have smaller, more spread-out audiences that are harder to measure accurately. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

How Ratings Are Calculated
  • Nielsen Measurement: The Nielsen Company uses a combination of methods to track viewership across different platforms. [1]
    • Metered Markets: In larger markets, Nielsen uses set-top boxes in households to measure exactly which channel is being watched and when. [2]
    • Unmetered Markets: In smaller markets, Nielsen uses paper mailers where households record their viewing habits. [2]
    • Delayed Viewing: Nielsen accounts for delayed viewing by including "live + 3 days" and "live + 7 days" metrics. [6]
  • Broadcast vs. Cable:
    • Broadcast: Broadcast networks have traditionally had larger audiences and are easier to measure. Live sports and news on broadcast are often considered the most reliable ratings because almost all viewers watch live. [1, 7]
    • Cable: Cable channels can have more niche audiences, which can be harder to track. Some cable channels may also focus more on subscription-based revenue and rely on internal viewer analytics rather than Nielsen ratings for their profitability. [1, 3, 8]
Challenges with Modern TV Ratings
  • Streaming and Online Viewing: The rise of streaming and online platforms makes it more difficult to get a complete picture of audience viewership, as not all platforms share their data with Nielsen. [3, 7]
  • Different Advertising: Advertisers have different interests when it comes to online and broadcast viewing, making it challenging to get a consistent set of data across platforms. [9]
  • Niche Audiences: Measuring the viewership of niche cable shows is a significant challenge, as these shows are by definition not watched by the masses. [3]

I've been posting that B1G should add CW, as it's a broadcast network that's available everywhere. The more broadcast networks over cable networks the better.

Tangential to tv ratings. I’ve mentioned I didn’t see anyone being kicked out of the B10 (which some worried about) but could envision a change in revenue distribution similar to what the ACC is doing. I didn’t realize the OSU president had made comments about it recently. Slides that show viewership tiers of schools in each conference.

Looks like he will put out those green tables. I don't see CW or BTN in his list though like previous years. SECN and ACCN aren't measured by Nielsen.

ACC getting some good ratings.
I guess...

Florida State - Virginia was the best of the 7pm also-rans. They were up against Arizona vs Iowa State, and Memphis vs Who Cares. The slate of noon games on the popular networks weren't great, so GT-Wake had the highest ranked teams, which if you don't really care who is playing, will grab the lazy & casual eyeballs.

This site has updated their week 5 numbers, a little more comprehensive than sportsmediawatch this year. BTN, CW, TNT etc... included

RATINGS WARNING for Friday's game... Rutgers at Washington in Seattle going against Tigers at mariners in Seattle in game 5 to advance to AL Champioship for a WS berth.

That is all.
That's what most people are talking about in Seattle right now, the baseball game.
