These arguments are actually asinine.
1). Jordan is the more accomplished player, not the better player. Similar to Brady (more accomplished) and Rodgers (better at playing the position). When I have discussions with people about what MJ actually does better the conversation only ever points one direction...winning. Which is a team aspect....not an individual aspect. MJ led those teams without question and was definitely the best player in the game, but, in all actuality the only thing I would prefer MJ over LBJ in is a mid-range offensive game. If people watch the game objectively and take out their emotional love for one player they can see that MJ doesn't defend the ball better, rebound it better, pass it better, shoot it from 3 better, finish at the basket better (not his fault he was 6'6 200 and LBJ is 6'8 255), or even has better longevity. MJ does score the ball at a higher rate (I'm guessing due to shot attempts per game), but I'll concede that point without digging up evidence whether true or not.
2). ESPN has done a great job of painting MJ like he's a mix between Mother Teresa and Barrack Obama. MJ changed the game in the early 90's for everyone and there is an emotional attachment to what he once was, so much so that people can't even critique him....ESPN doesn't help these matters.
3). Let us never forget what MJ went through in the 80's. Perpetual beat downs by the Pistons and Celtics. The Lakers were the quintessential team of the 80's and the Bulls (MJ) could never even get to them. The Bulls took countless beatings by the Celtics and Pistons. People who ACTUALLY understand basketball always bring up the question....who did MJ ever actually beat in the Ship? An OLD LA team, a Portland team with Duckworth and Drexler, a Suns team with Barkley and who...Dan Marjele and Kevin Johnson, a Seattle team with Kemp and Payton (his actual most impressive Finals win), and a Utah team who was severely over the hill. He beat the last 3 (Seattle and Utah 2x) with the help of Kukoc and Rodman. Always remember, Bird and Isaiah used to beat MJ like a child when they played him in the 80's and I wouldn't even begin to imagine what the real Showtime Lakers would have done to him IF he made it out the East.
4). Basketball has WAY to many variables to grant someone the GOAT. When speaking of greatness people who understand basketball always name their "Starting 5" so to speak. Anyone with an IQ over a potato can see that LBJ and MJ would both be on that starting 5.
The countless arguments on this are always fun but at the same time tiresome. People today need to understand that when you're watching LBJ you're watching ONE of the greatest to ever do it. Enjoy it while it lasts.
