Who are the favorites in 4a this year? 2 time defending state champ IC Norcom is now 3a so there will be some a new champion in March. Kings Fork is without a doubt the preseason #1 but who follows?

King's Fork would've been preseason #1, but their best player - Keith Stagg - transferred out to Quality Education Academy in North Carolina.

Would take a closer look at Lake Taylor, Liberty Christian, John Champe and a few others.

Millbrook will be very athletic but it will be interesting to see who steps up as the leading scorer to replace Harrell. Talent is there to be at least a threat in the region.

@matthew328826 what is your take on GW Danville? Returns a solid bunch in Pat Robinson, Cayman Wilson, and Amardius Jones, who were very good as sophomores this past season.

Think GW is always in the hunt. My question would be do they have a go-to guy similar to Hairston two seasons ago or Rodgers last year? Even with Rodgers a season ago, who was very good, they were prone to offensive droughts, as shown in the 4A State Semis loss to Norcom.

So if they got a guy or two that can get 15-18PPG a night, that'll be a big deal in them moving up from that second-tier of the Top Ten (6-10) to the in the title conversation when March rolls around.

Young Handley team and Sherando will make this a little interesting for Millbrook. At least in the Winchester area.

William Byrd, new to 4A, is going to be good. They ran into Spotswood in the region semis last year, but they had a great team and return all of it this year.

Handley is a year away. I fully expect them to make a deep run in 2 years possibly next year.

Sherando will never threaten for a state bid , plenty of talent , but no coaching. The best basketball talent transfers out .

So it's coaches fault that two brothers transferred because basketball is weak in this area and they wanted more competition to prepare them for college basketball which I believe they have already gotten offers from Division 1 schools?

Absolutely not, not saying that at all. But if the program is in place to provide the preperation for the next level, and is successful, then the players wouldn't be looking to transfer . They would want to be there.

So I guess Erick Green leaving Millbrook was bad also? He left after winning state title and being named player of the year in the state. The nucleus of the team was back and he had already signed with VA Tech. Look like everything was in place for him to continue to be successful, but the opportunity to play against D1 players almost every night was best for him to prepare for the ACC. Correct me if I'm wrong?

Va.Tech wanted Green to transfer to another school so he could play more games against top notch competition

You are correct, however I am not talking about above average special players, I am talking about average to a little above average talent at the high school level. The better coaching wins, and that's why Millbrook and Handley are better , they have better coaching. I was just stating that Sherando who I have had the opportunity to watch against winchester teams several times is always out coached, they have decent talent though. Just a opinion, sorry if you disagree. Have a nice day.

Seems like you were looking for people to help you bash the coach at Sherando and you are hurt that your statements didn't get you any support. Now you have a nice day!

I don't think I was bashing any one coach, the Sherando history and record in the sport of basketball supports itself. It takes more than one coach to make a quality program work. From top to bottom the coaching at Millbrook and Handley is much better in the sport of basketball. If you disagree with that , I am sorry and that's ok. I don't need any support , I thought this was a place you could say your opinion.

It is and I'm stating mine also. When you talk about coaches usually it's the head coach...so don't back track all of a sudden...also jury is still out on Handley and Millbrook coaches...remember Mankins and Dixon aren't coaching anymore for those teams so your top to bottom comment remains to be seen once they have done this for a while.

Dixon is a legend and Mankins did a very good job. Yes the jury is still out on Handley and Millbrook coaches now. Sherando will be .500 this year, especially with starting guard injured and maybe out for season.

Mankins did a very good job? Only made it to multiple state final 4's and won a state title when you had to beat all of AA not this division 3 and division 4 crap that now have for basketball. I believe they beat Brunswick for the title? They had two current division 1 players on that team.
