Excellent! I bet that is the first SWC event. I can't find anything in 1928. I assume that 1958 article was off by a year and Curtis first basketball title is 1930 after Cozad won football in fall 1929.

I found that to be true with the NVC as well. The schools met during the school year and organized a conference track meet for the spring of that school year. They probably then used the summer to organize other conference events for the next year.

Anyone know what the Central Platte conference would have looked like in the 80s. My dad always talked about the wrestling meet being a quad but we could never come up with the fourth school. We were always at Maywood, Eustis or Farnam (one of them had wrestling while the other didn't, and Arnold. Maybe Stapelton? Maxwell, Brady, and St. Anns didn't have wrestling.

In the late 90s/early 2000s I have these teams in the Central Platte: Eustis-Farnam, Arnold, Maxwell, Stapleton, Paxton, Brady, Elwood, and Medicine Valley. But, I don't have a timeline of when schools joined and left. And, there could be schools missing.

Not sure this will work, but I've been trying to graphically represent the histories of the A-B conferences (and a couple of others that I have good histories of). Look here.
Did some digging to find this spreadsheet you put together a few years ago @TC53. For ease of reading, is it possible to freeze the top row with the years? Pretty interesting scrolling through the spreadsheet though, thanks for putting that together!

Elwood left the CPC in 99-00 to join the FKC. Eustis I believe joined the FKC around 07-08, or somewhere close to that. Don't have a timeline for those other schools.

I tried to repeat the years throughout the document, but that type of presentation won't let me freeze the top line. It does update though when I make any changes to the original.

I’m pretty sure Elwood had wrestling and was a member of the CPC in the 80s. Paxton also joined in the mid 80s but I don’t think they had wrestling.

I would have loved for the second Mathers book to have been completed since I paid for it but never received it (or a refund). I have the original book and really enjoyed it.
I also paid for a book and never received it or a refund. Whaddyagonnado?

I agree with you that Ainsworth fits better with the NVC teams. Not sure Neligh and some of the other eastern NVC teams would want to add Ainsworth though.

Ainsworth and Valentine in the SWC never made any sense at all to me.
Ainsworth is out of the SWC at the end of the 23-24 school year.

I found this old conference list from 2001. It's interesting to see how many conferences have changed since then. In my area alone:

Central Platte Conference: Disbanded in 2008?

The Republican Valley Conference and the Golden Plains Activities Conference merge to form the Republican Plains Activities Conference. (2008?)

The Sandhills Conference and the Loup Valley Conference merge to form the Mid-Nebraska Conference (2014)

Was re-reading the thread and noticed this. Maybe somebody can correct me but wasn't the Republican Valley the RVL, for Republican Valley LEAGUE? Like the SPVA, I dig it when conferences break the norm but are still correct.

Did some Elwood digging. The Pirates stayed in the RVL until the fall of 1982 when they finally had to shift to 8-man football. They went to the Central Platte for 8-man football. They joined the Fort Kearny in 1999. They had attended some FKC wrestling meets in the early 90s when that conference was low on grappling teams.

BTW- I was doing some AI experimentation the other day, having it edit some writing I was doing about historical conferences, and the AI recommended THIS THREAD as a good place to go for information!

Does anyone recall what year the Loup Valley Conference merged with the conference with Hyannis, Arthur Co. to form the MNAC?

I found an August 2014 article about the birth of the new MNAC.
it was around the time when Twin Loup and Ansley-Litchfield formed because about half the schools in the Sandhills and Twin Loup were cooped with someone from the other conference (including Sandhills-Thedford). Ansley-Litchfield would eventually move on to the FKC when Hi-Line formed.

There was another thread on conference realignment, but I couldn’t find it so I’ll post here. It seems Freeman will be requesting membership in the Southern Nebraska Conference beginning 2027 per BOE minutes. If approved they will depart the ECNC.

Southern Nebraska Conference Board of Directors:

I write on behalf of Freeman Public Schools regarding the district's interest in the Southern Nebraska Conference (SNC). This letter serves as Freeman's formal request to join the SNC beginning in the 2027-2028 school year. While the district understands that this timeline may present a challenge, we hope the SNC Board of Directors understands the importance of providing the East Central Nebraska Conference (ECNC) with adequate notification and time for our athletic department to adjust scheduling.

Freeman joined the ECNC in 2012-2013. During that time, Freeman has earned nearly 80 conference championship or runner-up titles. Unfortunately, the number of conference schools has decreased over the last several years, with four larger schools moving to other conferences. The ECNC has also seen increased financial instability and has had to make some difficult decisions that have impacted conference schools. Freeman wants to be proactive in our decisions relating to conference affiliation and believes the SNC is an ideal conference to be a part of.

Besides the concerns mentioned above relating to the ECNC, there are many benefits of joining the SNC. We believe that Freeman is a better fit in the SNC due to our steadily increasing enrollment. We already compete against several SNC schools in multiple sports and activities and that will likely increase. There is less disparity in student enrollment across the SNC and we are excited about the possibility and challenge of an increased level of competition. The conference is financially stable and provides multiple opportunities for member schools. Ultimately, we fell that this is the best opportunity for our students, staff and community to join a strong, competitive conference.

I have included a fact sheet outlining Freeman's enrollment and the activities we currently participate in. Please contact me if you have any questions. We appreciate your consideration.

Dr. Andrew Havelka
Superintendent
Freeman Public Schools
