I didn't make it to state track this year, but for those who did. Did you like the new format of the event being over 4 days? How were the crowds? Parking?

I know athletes got a lot more rest time with this new format which I think is beneficial. This article is interesting from Stu about keeping the 4 day format or if Burke doesn't upgrade moving to GI with their new stadium.

Actually the athletes got less rest with a lot of the running events, especially on the "Finals" day.

Pros and Cons to both formats. It's fun to be able to see all the athletes competing on one day and to have the massive crowds......it's also nice to not have to fight long lines, no parking, etc. when it is spread out.

Rest was horrible for the kids on both days. On Saturday my 400 girl only got the boys 400m, girls 1600 and boys 1600 before having to go in the 300 hurdle finals. I think it ended up being approximately 25 minutes of rest. On a “normal” Finals Saturday she would have had a couple hours to regroup.

I think the positives of the 4 day format were pretty much all spectator related. Easier to get in and out and find seats, plus not having to wait a long time to see kids run. I think the “casual” fan loved it. I myself missed the Saturday atmosphere of having ALL classes (boys and girls) in one place at one time. I may be mistaken, but I believe we are one of the few states to do this.

If we want to give the kids their best chance to perform at an optimal level the 4 day format is not an ideal format at all, and is this about the spectators or the kids? I shouldn’t have to answer that.

I’m all for keeping it in Burke, but do agree some upgrades are needed. Something has to be done with the god awful trees on the north hillside. What a horrible idea to plant those in the first place. Has absolutely ruined all viewing from that end of the stadium.

I would like to see a 3 day format going forward. I liked the "pre-lim days" where each class got their own spotlight and kids were in a "normal" meet setting. I would like to see the all class finals day back though. The showcase of all classes for both boys and girls at the same venue at the same time is the absolute best part of state track.

That's an interesting concept I had not heard or thought of.........I think I like this 3-day proposal of yours

I’m not opposed to a 3 day or a different format. Serious consideration needs to be given to the schedule and the amount of rest being given to the athletes. State was nothing like a “regular” season meet as some have suggested. It was run way faster with fewer heats in the 4 day format compared to a regular season meet. Without a doubt this year’s schedule of events won’t work in the future. I think with some tweaking it can be improved. I too would like to see some semblance of the ALL Class Finals kept for Saturday. As a coach I love being in the stadium with a chance to see ALL the best athletes in our state gathered in one place for one day.

As a track coach I loved the 4 day format. Only thing I would change is that running events are done together for added rest. But I would keep the field events as they are separated.

9am field events
1030 3200 m relay D followed by A
Hurdles
100m
400m
Second session of field events
3200
300 hurdles
200m

It was very similar to the rest I see at a regular meet.
