So 100 schools have to compete for only one title? Why are people so hell bent on consolidating the lower classes and taking away a state title for a team?

I’m not saying a D-2 team can’t compete with a D-1 or even C-2 team. They can and often do it during the regular season. However there’s already only 8 teams out of 50 or so that make the state tournament, and now you want to make that 8 out of 100? Meanwhile in Class A and B 8 out of 24/28 make it. Doesn’t seem right to me to tell the small schools you’re gonna make it even harder for them to win a title.

I know there would be more teams in that one class but I think they should combine to class D. Most of schools that make it to state in both of those classes are fairly even. Thoughts?
While the top of D1 and D2 may be pretty even, the difference between an average D1 team and an average D2 team can be pretty significant. Besides, if both classes are supplying quality fields, why would the NSAA want to decrease their revenue by reducing the size of the state tournament?

I understand what you are saying but the 100 schools, doesn't help your argument, because schools are the same as ratio of students and in Class A a much larger student total population is fighting for one title, than all of Class D, Now you could say the percentage of enrollment is to great between the top ofD1 and the bottom of D2 classes, which would create a disadvantage for a school competing against schools three times the size or more BUT just saying a 100 schools is very narrow in thought, because the number of students is not greater To give you an idea, roughly 5000 boys in all of Class D and D2 and competing for Two state Titles and In Class A, roughly 25000 boys are competing for ONE state title

There needs to be a state wide effort to consolidate more schools within 15 mile range of one another. Nebraska does not need 6 classes. HSF, Mullen, Loomis, the usuals in D2 would fair fine in D1 on the basketball court and football field.

Need to increase the sizes of Class A and B before consolidating the lower classes.
Something needs to be done with Classes A and B no question. But I’m not sure where you draw the line. Looking at basketball numbers this year there are 31 teams in Class A. Total enrollment at the top is Omaha South with 2,226. The bottom, North Platte with 896 (total enrollment), not just boys. NP Boys estimated is 450.

What I would like to see is Class A to become all OPS/Millards/Papios/LPS/Prep/Westside/Gretna Kearney and GI. That would be 24 teams with an enrollment gap of 2,226 to 1,121 (Gretna)

Then you have a class of schools like Fremont, Norfolk, Columbus, North Platte, Hastings, Ralston, SSC, Scoblo, Lex, Seward, Schuyler. Total enrollment would be Fremont at 555 to Seward at 205. 24 teams as well.

I think we have to be very careful in assuming that larger districts are more efficient than smaller ones or that all schools within 15 miles of each other would be better served to consolidate. I’m affiliated with an entity that pays taxes in 2 school districts and the class D school district has a smaller levy than the larger district. If a community chooses to pay the taxes to keep their school open for the economic benefit of their community or so their children don’t have to spend an extra 30 or 45 minutes a day on a bus, don’t they have the right to make that choice?

That’s a fair point. Class A also has more sports and therefore more opportunities for those boys to win a state title. In the small classes, on average, you play football in the fall, bball or wrestling in winter, and track in the spring. Class A offers cross country, tennis, bowling, swimming, baseball, golf, and soccer in addition to the big four.

So you want to change it for North Platte but then you the same problem in Class B with North Platte having double and more than the bottom of B You are okay with that problem because one of your schools are now on top and not the bottom of the class

Ok let me put it this way Omaha South has the highest boy enrollment with 1157 and North Platte Boy enrollment is 469 That is 2.4 times larger. If you move North Platte down to B the smallest B is Omaha Roncoli or Aurora with 165 that is 2.8 times larger. You now just traded one problem for a larger problem, You move Aurora down and it happens again, someone will always be on the bottom and North platte is just it right now, thats the way it goes

Lots of D schools offer Cross Country and others I see what you are saying but the ratio is still way higher, even if you break it down by sport it is still 5 times higher

You guys covered much of the topic, but I got curious this morning when I saw this thread, so I decided to find the aggregate totals for each class. I did this for boys basketball only for the sake of time since most spots break up classifications by gender now for the 2020-2021 school year based on NSAA Enrollment.

NUMBER OF SCHOOLS
A: 31 (10.23%)
B: 29 (9.57%)
^ C1: 56 (18.48%)
^* C2: 62 (20.46%)
% D1: 66 (21.78%)
D2: 57 (18.81%)
%^* Unaccounted: 2 (0.66%)
TOTAL: 303

TOTAL NSAA ENROLLMENT (Boys Only)
A: 22,931 (55.88%)
B: 7,417 (18.07%)
^ C1: 4,826 (11.76%)
^* C2: 2,720 (6.63%)
% D1: 1,921 (4.68%)
D2: 1,180 (2.88%)
%^* Unaccounted: 41 (0.10%)
TOTAL: 41,036

I based the class designation on the district/subdistrict assignments.

It's a matter of whether you look at it with respect to the number of schools or number of students. While there are a lot fewer schools in A and B (19.80% of all schools), they account for the vast majority of the number of boys (73.95% of all boys). In fact, Class A alone accounts for more than half of the boys by NSAA Enrollment while just 10.23% of the number of schools.

////////

There are a lot of consolidated/cooperative teams. I was able to get a lot of them accounted for, but here are the ones I could not account for (number of NSAA Enrollment boys in parentheses):

Quest Forward Academy (31)
Omaha Street (10)

Neither of these have varsity sports programs.

Allen and Emerson Hubbard make up Tri County Northeast. Newman Grove is a coop with Albion Boone Central.
Thanks, the above is updated for this as well now!

I thought I had a translation error earlier having both a "Tri County" and "Tri County Northeast" but was too lazy to actually look into it.

So that leaves really just Banner County, Loup County, and McPherson County. Looking at the NSAA site, it appears Banner County (9 boys) didn't sponsor basketball this year. The other two schools had just 5 boys in grades 9-11 in 2019-2020, so I'm guessing they didn't sponsor a team either.

What if the smaller classes are split even farther and have them play their state tournament in a different location than the rest, like is done for 6-man football?

Classes A and B make up about 74% of the total boys enrollment.

Doug Goltz leads FCSH to another championship in D2. Now has 11 basketball championships and 8 football titles. He has never lost in a state championship game in either sport in now 19 appearances.

With the win, he now has 694 career victories which ties him with Duane Mendlink (West Point Central Catholic, Wisner-Pilger) for most career wins in state history. (He also has over 300 football wins.)

Goltz also has seven state championships in track.

With their 11th boys basketball state championship, Falls City Sacred Heart is now tied for fourth all-time with most championships won with Wahoo.

Most Boys State Basketball Championships
1. Lincoln High - 15
2. Omaha Creighton Prep - 13
3. Lincoln Northeast - 12
4. Falls City Sacred Heart - 11
4. Wahoo - 11
6. Omaha Central - 10

Is this the most career wins in Boys Basketball? Doesn't John Miller have darn near 800 career wins?

He has 709 total wins, but that's boys and girls combined.

He had 585 wins and five state titles coaching the Chambers girls, and another 124 wins and a title with the Southern Valley boys

I need to update. Just talked to Coach Miller to double check. He has actually coached at Stuart for three years and has 36 wins with the Broncos (14, 13, and 9). He also coached the Palmyra boys for one year and had 13 wins there. I believe this puts his career record at 758-179. Sorry about not being more accurate with my original post.

I have done radio play by play for a number of games when he coached at Chambers and also some since he has been at Stuart. I try to keep a few records as far as conference champions etc for the area.
