A 1-7 team nearly made the playoffs in D1?! I don't know much about D1 and there are ineligible teams that factor into this, but that is real life? I mean no disrespect to those kids, but that has to make people strongly consider changing something to make sure a 1-7 team doesn't make the playoffs, don't it?

Did not even look at that actual bracket.

I don't think a 2-6 team should be in there either.

Not to bag on this team, but I just checked and their lone win was against a team that finished 0-8, whom they beat 64-6. Taking that game out, they were outscored 54-338. This would have to be one of, if not the biggest upset in Nebraska playoff history.

West Holt played Boyd County before back on week 5 and beat them 50-14. Should have to be at least 5-3 to make playoffs.

I note, for you all harping on the bad teams who made the playoffs last year, that Burwell, would not have made a 16-team field. Won the whole shooting match. The only issue you have is the first round is called the playoffs. If the 8-man coaches did the right thing it would be this.

- Keep the first round the same. Call it the qualifying round.
- Re-bracket the 16 remaining teams based on new points and re-seed with no geography. Call that the first round of the playoffs.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess Burwell did not have a 1-7 record. There's always a balancing act of letting in too many teams (including bad ones) and cutting out too many teams (including good ones). I think if we're being honest we can agree that a team that is 1-7 might be too far on letting in bad teams.

Why not play 9 games like everyone else and take 16 teams into the playoffs? (Honest question on why that didn't happen when the C classes switched)

The reality is that a 16 team bracket is not a "one size fits all" bracket. 16 in class a is ridiculous. Class A should be a 4 team bracket, or at most, an 8 team bracket. Absolutely no reason anymore than 8 should go to playoffs in A. I really think it should be 4 teams there.

Class B should be another 8 team bracket. If A and B stay at 16, than C1 and C2 should move to 24 to keep the ratio of percentage of qualifying teams to teams in the class. EX: A has 28 teams with 16 qualifying, means over 50% make it. B has 32 teams with 16 qualifying, means 50% make it. C1 and C2 have something like 44 teams and 16 make it, that is something like 37%. I have no idea how many D1 and D2 teams there are, but I'd guess the percentage of teams qualifying is well over 50%.

D1 is affected by c1 and c2 drop downs, all of them including bad teams affect the power points.
24 will be fine with me but there's an urban legend coaches don't want a first round bye (false).
The reason they don't do 9 is because too many teams can't do 8 already, but that would help some.
Having a round of 32 as sub state would be fine and then re seed. But I think 24 is better.

If the only option is 16 or 32 with no other changes, however, you HAVE to leave it at 32. Period.

Adding more fuel to the fire. Per Tyler Cavalli on Twitter(KAWL/KTMX play-by-play announcer) the BDS/Pawnee City 1st round game will start with a running clock because Pawnee City is facing numerous injury issues.
Wonder if this will bring about some sort of change?

I like the idea of a 24 team bracket that rewards the top seeds with a first round bye. I agree that a 1-7 team does not pass the test for a playoff caliber team, but instead of throwing out the teams like Burwell, lets make sure everyone of merit gets a chance and we reward those who have done well. Let the chips fall after that.

I like this idea, what would the timeline look like? Would the qualifying round take place the same week of the first round? Then every game after qualifying round played on Friday?

Those teams wash out in the playoffs. Nebraska is a small population state and deals with wide geography. In previous playoff plans only 4 or 8 or 16 teams made it in various classes and fans and prep raters screamed that deserving teams were left out. And, their arguments were just as convincing as the ones above. Nebraska has to err on one side or the other. They have chosen to err on the side of inclusion. I think it is the better of two evils.

If that is the case, then how did the C classes get the shortest end of the playoff stick?

While I do understand the complaints above, this is really, really well reasoned and argued even better. I guess it probably fits my opinion. And, does it really matter to the "purists" if a bad 2-6 team makes the playoff? Even for the #1 seed you get a tune-up against a team better than your scouts (If your"next 12" are better than your opponents starters, you really probably ought to be playing 11 man football anyway.), and the chance to play everybody in a playoff game.

You can just keep the timeline exactly the same as now with 8-man playing games Thursday, Wednesday, Tuesday, Monday. Then finals. I kind of like that the 8-man coaches use the old format and give small town football it's one night during the playoffs. If they played on Fridays they'd get little to no coverage.

The other great thing the 8-man coaches are Doug next year is not splitting classes until AFTER the ineligible teams are accounted for. So that will help as well.

Agreed. I love the mid-week games in 8 man playoffs

I really don't know what to say about class A & B when it comes to the playoffs, probably because I don't get it much thought. On the other hand I would like to see 20 teams make the playoffs in class C giving the top 4 teams a bye. If you look at the power points in class C1 you would have one team at 4-5 in the playoffs which would be Mitchell. For class C2 the worst record would by 5-4. I could live with one team having a losing record because over the years I have seen some pretty good 4-5 teams. Maybe not this year but in the past. As for the two D classes it needs to go to 24 teams, the top 8 teams would get a bye. I guess my thought is for example McCool Junction won an exciting 2OT game to get to 2-6. I guess what I would think as a coach is what a good win to end the year with. The kids finish with a good feeling because winning heals a lot of wounds and they can build off of that. Instead the will go into the next week having to travel and play one of the best teams in state. I understand not everyone feels this way but I would want to end the season on a win if I could especially if we have not had a lot of success. Also with football participation numbers lowering you would think if you could end on a positive note I would rather have that.
If you had 20, the top 12 would get byes.

I think class C has the best playoff setup. Quality teams and follows a Friday night 7pm structure. With a 9 game regular season and district play every game is important. The longer the regular season the more the cream rises to the top.

Burwell wouldn't have made the playoffs last year. maybe I'm on the outside here but....play 9 regular season games, improve the powerpoint formula even more, and frankly win the games you play!

"Win the games you play" is a very easy thing to say but at the small school level, C2 and down, one player being injured can make a huge difference. If you start the year with 4 teams that will make the playoffs, or rated, and lose those games, you then cannot make the playoffs... then you are left with half a season of trying to win but no end goal in sight. Also, a young team that can develop and be dangerous come playoff time, but loses early games, will not be rewarded for getting better.

Sounds like a lot of ifs and buts. Injuries are part of the game. Its called adversity and something that a lot of young men could benefit from learning about. I understand your points, just disagree in philosophy.

The more regular season games you play the more the top teams rise. Another game for Burwell, and another win, would have probably bumped them into the playoffs. If not, sorry, win your games. Draw a line somewhere and don't be so darn afraid of someone getting left out. Let's have 15 undeserving teams in so 1 doesn't get left out? We have a regular season for a reason.

I feel like this conversation is turning towards the whole "people aren't as though as they used to be" argument... I love adversity I believe its one of the primary learning aspects of football, but some schools get punished for simply where they are located with a 16 team playoff. If we need to call the first round a "play in round" then that's fine. Take 24 and have first-round byes... great.
I guess I'm just not so against a bad team in the playoffs... they show up they get smashed and they get a t-shirt so what? D1 is getting fixed next year and we won't have this problem of 1-7 making playoffs anymore.
IMO I feel like this whole take less to the playoffs just comes from some guys who went 7-2 back in 85 and didn't make playoffs so they feel that that was the way it should always be.

What about this: choose the playoff teams just by number of wins; then seed them by points. Would that give you a playoff you feel better about?

Injuries affect 8 man teams a lot worse than 11 man teams. Burwell revenged their two regular season losses last year convincingly in the playoffs and guess what they got their two starters back in those rematch games.
