And Rice and Rita and many other schools......they all have other duties such as admissions, school development, recruiting, fund raising, ect. But there main job is coaching.
And that, in a nutshell, is one of the major differences between Catholic high school football and public high school football.

Head coaches AND their varsity assistants who have a full academic load in one of the "solid" subjects have a tough job worthy of an extra stipend. The daily preparations and assessments for the classroom and the field make for a crazy few months.

Geez, how does a teacher-head coach navigate staying an entire semester at a school one is leaving to take over elsewhere?

Who's taking over st Sandburg
The first-year Division Chair for Health, PE & Drivers Ed at Sandburg, Sheamus Murphy, came over from Blue Island Eisenhower after a few seasons of decent results as Head FB Coach there. Maybe he has some candidates in his pipeline.

The Sheamus Murphy move to Sandburg last year and now this seemed to have perfectly lined up....

Almost like there was some sort of organized and deliberate plan for all of this to happen...

I guess he primary responsibility will be whatever subject he is teaching! Crazy since Coaching isn’t a profession in Illinois. At least that’s what I’m being told.
Yes, his primary responsibility is, and should be, the subject he is teaching. This is high school football in Illinois. It is an extra circular activity and it's coaches are paid as such, not a living wage. This isn't something these men spend 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, 12 months a year focusing on. This isn't college or the NFL like you seem to think it is

Maybe ESL pays Sunkett 100k to coach football and do nothing else. He would be the exception in a public school setting.

I never said he do nothing else. He is the AD as well. At one point did I ever say they did nothing else?
My comments are in response to coaching football not being a profession.

I never said it was any of those. I said it’s a profession. Kids leave college wanted to be a football coach. They know the requirements like any other profession and they do the necessary things to achieve that goal. Whether you respect it as such is up to you! To make it not a profession because you don’t agree with it or because we live in Illinois is why I responded.
I’m done with it. Enjoy.

H-F is a gold mine strike for coaching salaries and Buzea brought over a handful of Indiana head coaches as assistants to join in the cash grab. Comparing the approaches of Sandburg and Homewood Flossmoor is like night and day to coaching salaries. A lot of good at H-F to sway a decision.

Are you referring to stipends or teacher salaries?

Both. HF gives all years teaching and their stipends are higher.
For comparison's sake, I looked up their contracts. The following is with 5 years of experience and just a bachelor's degree (I chose 5 because I heard that is the most experience Sandburg gives):

Sandburg - 59,950 and 8,214 (tops out at 10,088)
HF - 60,833 and 8,550 ( tops out at 9,995 + 300 for longevity)

Not much of a difference. It is important to note that I heard on the news this morning that Sandburg's district just got a decent base pay increase (14% over 3 years) and a co-curricular increase. HF is probably lower than it will be since their contract on their site was ending this year.

Well when you have been in education for 20 years and Sandburg starts you at 5, that is a massive difference,

He was making more at Phillips though. So why would that now be a concern?

Because you are trying to get out of the CPS vortex? Now you can take a job that will pay you a lot more, has better facilities, better athletes, bigger budgets and athletic friendly administration. Same reasons another 230 coach tried for it.

You said it was just pay before. I'm not debating what a better destination is. I'm sure he will be a "better" coach when his talent is better. I have never been impressed with his backyard football style of x's and o's

As a long time teacher snd coach, I am curious what a “solid” subject is.

How about a subject that has an ACT, SAT, ASVAB, college course placement exam, apprentice admission section or an available AP exam associated with it?
One of the classes I teach is Consumer Education, where we learn investing, buying a car, renting an apartment, etc. None of those tests that you mention apply. Most people would still see exceptional value associated with this class I imagine.

Absolutely and although the accountability factor may be different, the importance is not and very significant in its own way without a doubt.
