No Varsity Season for Sandwich

This is an excerpt from last year's team preview in the local paper:

To do that, the Indians will rely on a small varsity group of just 25 (13 seniors, 12 juniors) despite a healthy 62 within the program (37 junior varsity).

Half the juniors didn't come back to play their senior year and what happened to the healthy JV numbers?

Maybe someone with more inside knowledge can comment, but for some reason I was thinking I heard that the school had the most stringent covid protocols last year and they were constantly on quarantine. They had 3 forfeits last year.

I’ve seen this coming for a few years ever since the interstate eight (original)broke up. Sandwich was in a conference that they could compete in. Now unfortunately for them they are in a situation that makes it almost impossible to win a game and a winning season is flat out unobtainable. I can tell you this it is not the schools fault or the athletic directors fault or even the coaches fault. The schools that bailed out a few years back and left Plano and Sandwich holding the bag. I blame them and the Ihsa for allowing the constant conference shuffling so teams can somehow finagle 6 wins. You can only take so many 60 to 0 *** beatings before the kids say forget it. And that is pretty much what’s happening here and I would bet unless something changes Plano might not be too far behind

Sandwich 623
Harvard 747
Johnsburg 595
Marengo 662
Plano 718
Richmond Burton 624
Rochelle 832

They play one crossover with the bigger division and bunch of schools their size plus two non con game I'm not sure what else you can ask for? The crossover game is probably a loss but the but there isn't a reason they can schedule two logical non games then get into the conference schedule.

It was this the first two seasons of the restructure that changed there course Kaneland, sycamore, lasalle-Peru, Morris….. This year schedule would’ve been possibly better but the damage is already been done.

In one thread we have people blaming the IHSA for sticking with the geographic split in classes 6 through 1. Here we have the IHSA being blamed for schools changing conferences. There was previously a thread that blamed the IHSA because a team lost a game that they chose to pick up after a covid cancelation. On and on and on.

This is gonna be an unpopular opinion, but so was the heliocentric model of the solar system initially... The IHSA is not to blame for all these problems. Speak to your school admins.

School admins have done there best with the cards they were giving. All I know is the numbers having 2 in the program and watching it dwindling

Come on, can not blame the current ICE schools for wanting a conference with a tighter geographic area.. they are currently playing schools roughly the same size, but you want to blame Peotome, Manteno and Herscher, but not their coaches or AD???? LOL

you seem to have a whole bunch of excuse making

Well I tell you What I know you don’t live here and you haven’t had any kids go through and play in sandwich…. I have, and I’m telling you what has happened I lived it from the start and it all started with them jumping ship. So you can have your opinion and say I’m making excuses I just know the truth.

Then thats on their coaches. Plano made the same jump and won 6 games last year

I'm not sure who is to blame, but I surely don't think it is the IHSA or the ICE schools.

A school with the enrollment of Sandwhich’s should not strugggle w numbers let alone struggle to field a team.

Everyone involved in that program should be looking solely in the mirror and figure out what the problem is.

The problem surely ain’t former I8 teams and most definitely ain’t the IHSA’s fault.

A good place to start is kids not going out bc they don’t want to get beat 60-0. Sounds like you have a Culture problem.

What I would fault the IHSA on is if they don’t let those kids transfer and play this year. That would be a travesty.

Guess I’m not following the numbers issue here.

12 upperclassmen + a good sized sophomore class. You can field a team of 20-30 kids.

Loads of teams have done this is the past. Sure you take your lumps but at least you field a team and the kids get to play.

I played for a 1A program and I can remember playing a 4A playoff program. We took the field for warmups and chanted out our battle cry while we did jumping jacks in a circle. As I looked around I counted 12 guys!!! Once the sophomores changed uniforms from their game prior we had 22 suited up. It is what it is and we knew nothing different.

A public school program w 600+ kids in the school should have no problem fielding a team if you do what needs to be done in years prior w the feeder.

Furthermore, should the conference you’re in matter as part of the rational to cancel the season? Every team out there knows when they are playing an inferior opponent and takes the foot off the gas at running clock (at least 99% of them).

Isn't this also kind of ironic that you are complaining about the IHSA allowing teams to shuffle for a easier trip to the playoffs, but yet want Sandwich to be in the ICE because they "could compete". To me it looks like they fit into their new conference nicely with the exception of Rochelle being 200 students larger. Harvard is about 150 students larger than them as well. Harvard is pretty bad IIRC.

Sandwich 623
Harvard 747
Johnsburg 595
Marengo 662
Plano 718
Richmond Burton 624
Rochelle 832

Last years ICE enrollments were:
WIlmington- 413
Braidwood- 468
Coal City- 675
Lisle- 454
Peotone-472
Manteno- 648
Streator- 839
Herscher- 504

Sandwich is significantly larger than about half the ICE. I'm using the 150 student mark as my determination.

I was pretty busy with personal stuff around the time the conference dropped back down to 8 teams so I am not sure on the entire backstory. In my own beliefs booting Sandwich and Plano out based on travel never made sense to me. Was travel the motivation? I truly do not know. Lisle and Streator are kind of outliers in terms of travel distance as well.

What I do like with 2 teams gone (didn't have to be Sandwich and Plano), is teams now have the flexibility to schedule two out of conference games. That is huge IMO.

Not that my opinion means anything, but I would rather have kept Sandwich and Plano than any of others that have left over the last 20 years (Dwight, Seneca, Westmont). Also not a big fan of Streator being in.

what’s also very surprising is Sandwhich is a wrestling powerhouse (went to state again this year). Their are tough nosed kids in that town but they’ve always struggled in football.

This.
I never understood why they struggled so much given with how wrestling and football success often go hand in hand at the small school level. I remember they had a semifinal run about a decade ago, but very little success other than that.

You're right......I just looked at their season summary on ihsa site and they have been pretty dismal throughout their short history. The I8 had some years that were a little more open and they never seemed to capitalize.
