This has to be one of, if not the best game this weekend. A young East vs the #1 team in the state not named East St. Louis. Probably a match-up of the best private school the last 10 years vs the best public school the past 10 years. Can East pull the upset like Loyola did to them in 2018? Does this run make East with 10+ starters the #1 team entering 2022? Can Coach Z and Coach Holecek just arm wrestle at the 50 yard line to decide the winner? In all seriousness will this be a game?

Seems like next year this will be a better matchup. Look at what each team did versus Naperville Central. Loyola should be 14+ point favorites. But anything can happen in the playoffs especially when these two get together. Definitely the top two 8A teams of the last decade.

For sure. Right after the coin toss they will play a game. If it’s any good, I dunno.

I however am guessing it will be a very fine contest!

As match ups determine so much, I sense that the effectiveness of the LWE passing game will spell the outcome.

I love this matchup. I think LWE holds up and this comes down to a late 4th drive or two. Home field could make the difference. LWE needs to book as many flights as possible to get as many Frankforters to Wilmette as possible! LWE definitely will be incoming #1 in 2022.

I will just say this, Loyola is clicking at the right time.

I love LWE as 2/3 of my children are grads. I hope I'm wrong, but I think Loyola is just too good and has the secret sauce vs East. In the past it took special plays from a special player like AJ for East to beat Loyola. Bell ringing, legal hard hits on QB on read option keepers have eliminated one dimension of East's O, as the QB wants no part of running the ball after the first quarter. Loyola can then sit back and double East's athletes, the D-ends can crash in without worry, game over. Time for East to adjust. In the past we have been unable to do so.

All comes down to the LWE passing game. They need to be able to sustain drives and keep the secondary honest. I can't see LWE winning a grinding game against Loyola.

That team I saw on Saturday, basically playing with its food against NC, is not going to lose. Their D is suffocating. Their OL is spectacular and QB1 just makes all of the plays. And that team that they housed beat Hinsdale Central and Lincoln Way East earlier in the year so they weren't devoid of talent.

LWE does not run the RPO this year. QB has only seen action since the Lockport game very late. I can say LWE is the huge underdog in this one. Our chances of winning at Loyola went out the door in 2018 when AJ was on one leg but if we can get him to dress for this one we can keep it close! Loyola by 4 TD’s.

True. Lincoln Way East has lost two games since the last Loyola game on November 17, 2018 by a total of six points and you would think they need to reinvent the oblong inflatable. There is not a chance Loyola loses again before the Bears move to the Heights. Wait Coach Holecek is from the Heights…Marian Catholic Heights. This is a conspiracy. Loyola by 50.

Loyola has to be pretty heavy favorite here. But I also was the one crowning LWE in 2018. I still believe healthy Henning changes that outcome, but you play with the team you have. The team LA has this year is going to be tough to beat, but coach Z will draw up a plan and they will implement it.

LWE finds itself in unfamiliar territory being huge underdogs in this game. I don’t see this as a blowout but who knows. I was impressed last week with how fast the Griffins were and although not very big they really were putting some big hits on the opponent. I am hoping the young Griffins will give this tough Rambler team a game. I know coach Z will have them ready.

Go East!

It's funny at this time of year. Bones is calling LA a "heavy favorite" and Corey is calling LWE a "huge underdog." If I were have to posted those words, it would be labeled as bulletin board material, and I would probably be slammed for being conceited or overly boastful.

I ain't sayin' nuttin'.

Ramblinman there is no sanbaggin needed for this one. The consensus is the only team to inherit the 8A title after an extended stay in Frankfort are your Loyola boys. Since Warren has decided to close the theme park earlier than usual the path is cleared. Since 2018 this return to Wilmette has flipped the script to have Loyola the unprecedented favorite. Heck even the weather will be a carbon copy of the last meeting! The young guys from LWE have only a miracle chance in this one.

I don't think it would be boastful, probably bulletin board material as everything is. It would probably depend on how it was said though. I think some results like the WWS/BR and MC/Batavia games makes me think this will be competitive, but I can't ignore the Sandburg loss. Overall, while these are two of my top 3 coaching staffs (with the MS staff being the other) I don't think the LWE personnel is what they need to have to pull off the upset. If they can keep the game low scoring anything is possible.

How can Brother Rice televise their game on BRTV?
Are you 100% sure that is happening?

If so, then maybe there is some sort of license that Rice is paying to NFHS which I assume has the exclusive rights to quarterfinals live stream...because they paid the IHSA for those rights.

Question...is there really any check and balance to this? Is the IHSA or NFHS actively searching other streams to see if teams are doing it? Theoretically, couldn't a school do a live broadcast on youtube/facebook, not say anything and just...stream it?

Disclaimer: I don't really know what I'm talking about, but this is what I think.

I don't think NFHS has exclusive rights, just rights from the IHSA. And anybody can also buy those non-exclusive rights from the IHSA but like Edgy said it gets more and more expensive as the playoffs continue. At the Qtr finals I think you're looking at $400-600, or at least that what I think it was about 2-3 years ago (maybe more this year.).

Two fantastic programs with a great rivalry, outstanding players (LWE's Henning IL Player of the Year in 2019 and LA's Pemberton last year) and two legacy coaches in Zvonar and Holecek. A Zvonar-coached team is not going to be a walk in the park for anybody...Loyola's size might be the difference though.

Temps in the high 30s and winds around 15 mph could surely affect things like any margin of victory either way, over/under numbers and parts of the game featuring the ball in the air.
