The HGL consists of schools that are dead, defunct, or departed, but where the football spirit has never died. The players for these schools are likewise gone in a physical sense, leaving no earthly trace behind, but they still suit up each season for their alma maters, playing before huge crowds of strangely silent spectators. Sometimes on a clear night, when there is no static in the air, a radio broadcast of their games can be picked up at the far end of the AM dial.

Last year Mendel topped the HGL, outscoring its league opponents by a combined 312-83. In the last game of the season, Mendel beat a rugged St. George squad with a Hail Mary pass on the final play. In another close game last year, Weber edged out rival Gordon Tech on a muffed punt snap in the waning minutes. The Red Horde brings back most of its core players from last season and is expected to challenge the Monarchs for league dominance.

How about Lincoln Way North who went 11-1 in their last year of football?

Can extinct teams of schools still in existence (Holy Trinity, St Mel's, SFdS) join?

Can't forget about the Chicago Public League's own Robeson Raiders!

This brings up an interesting theological question. In the physical world, extinction is synonymous with death. However, in the other realm, where the football spirit is still strong, especially in the minds of current and former fans, then it can be said that, yes, all the teams named above can be admitted to the HGL. Nor is it a requirement that the schools be Catholic. As Pope Francis recently said, "Football is religion." Of course, he was referring to soccer, but the feeling is universal.

But if I'm not mistaken, the last time the Knights took the field was in 1969.
