LWE AT GBW

If LWE is who we think they
Yeah I think that's the question...How good is LWE? I have some lingering doubts after the Brook loss and HF only putting 21 on Fremd (I've seen Fremd and felt like a high caliber HF team should have Maine South'ed'em). I'm not doubting that LWE is the best team in the state, but again how good?

My other measure of comparison is the NC defense giving up 38 in week 2. Fairly confident GW defensively is more skilled and disciplined as whole defensively. Rodgers at mike backer is super fast, takes great angles, and tackles well. Metz is a ball hawk in the DB and great on run support (he's a 6'3 195lb safety who Hetlet has molded into something reminiscent of Hayden Carlson--- @capnbillhitters Is that a fair thing to say?).

At any rate, no doubt I'd take GW at +40.

We don’t speak of Mr Carlson when comparing against other players. That dude was as good as any football player in the 90+ years of fielding teams at GW.

The hard part is the size. Loyola a couple of years ago was, for the most part, bottled up in the first half. One crazy pass before the break or they go into half 7-0 (I think but others may dispute). But that 2nd half was a clinic. LA spent the 2nd half running the same play over and over. While West started the game with 5 healthy LBs, they ended it with two. No depth meant a total steamrolling. That could play out in the 2nd half Saturday but that’s why we play the games. I love GWs LBs and DBs. They just aren’t that deep.

Game will be analogous to a little brother who is now 23 (LWE) coming home for thanksgiving and after some playful wrestling realizing he is stronger, bigger, and faster than his 26 y/o older brother (GBW) for the first time. Big bro holds a 2-0 advantage lifetime over little bro. Big brother will always hold a nonquantifiable psychological edge and level of confidence until he gets taken down by little bro like never before and realizes his edge is forever gone.
The LWE community in my opinion holds the GBW program in the highest level of esteem. For many years GBW was who many of us wanted to be. For us long time East fans GBW is the boogey man and Duchon field is Churchill Downs. This year however I think East makes the trip with a fearless group of top of class thoroughbreds that includes Secretariat and Man of War as part of the stable. Rain or shine, fast track or in the slop, the horses can still run.
28-17 LWE

Well said but only clarification is little brother roided out while away at school ( by taking on 1,000 students/50 football players from LWN) so this is a different LWE than GW has previously played.

One thing I will say is big brother will lay everything out to maintain the family pecking order. Hetlet will have them playing out of their minds. Even if the score gets lopsided.
Can only use 11at a time my man and most are LWE originals who were at the game last time we played.

I have seen both teams play and this game will not be close. GBW is one dimensional and LWE will shut down Cox and this game will be a running clock

LWE dismantled everyone they played this year. The only games closer than 32 were the first two against good team in Crete and Naperville Central. They beat the brook by 31-0 and HF 48-6. GW is one dimensional and that doesn’t work against LWE.

I can attest to this from watching a very strong run team get stuffed. If you can't throw the ball and can't do so at times other than predictable passing situations (3rd and long), you're dead, game over.

Not sure I understand. Last time we played the seniors were in elementary school. And if you think it is all about 11 guys, you’re crazy. Fresh legs and the ability to reload after injury are critical. See GWvLA 2016

What I’m saying is most of the boys that are starters watched the game against Glenbard West in Champagne. Many of them have watched that game over and over on YouTube. I know my son has watched it a couple dozen times. Tommy Fuessel was their hero and a cheap shot took him out of the game. They still talk about that. Just sayin :))

Pump the brakes cowboy. His game was essentially over after Carlson’s tackle on 4th down. Nothing cheap about that hit.

Ahem, no disrespect Cap, but it's know as "The Hit." ;)

He might be referring to a late hit called earlier in the game..."late hit" and "cheap shot" can be, but are not always, the same thing.

It was a back up linebacker that hit the “Legend Tommy Fuessel” from behind while sitting on the field. Late hit.. flagged , and in today’s world would have been an ejection. Still a classic game with the Griffins coming up I believe 7 or 8 yards short of a victory. A classic game and the hit at the end of the game was clean and not Carlson if i remember. Griffins had one play after the great football hit.

Tommy was an offensive coordinators dream. Calling a play was not necessary. Our best play was the “broken” play. JR66 we miss you.

How did a cheap shot take him out of the game? He didn’t miss a snap, was pumping up the crowd and got the 15 yard walk off.

Exactly. Just reaching for motivation in the wrong place.

The Beast doesn’t need to stoop so low. Try taking this game in stride.
Naaaaaaa, I wasn’t stooping Capn. I made a mistake and misspoke. No stooping from me. I was just trying to make the point that these Griffins remember the game very well. Sorry if I offended anyone.

I hope this video fired up East to put a hurting on the Hitters. Going into their home Z better play his starters the whole game.
Go East!

Awesome to hear and I believe it was a 4.44 electronic time for Tom. There are plenty of videos out there on YouTube for Tom Fuessel at LWE. If I see you at the game I will introduce myself JR. I have talked with Tom a couple of times and it has been a while. Good luck. Had a daughter graduate with Tom at East a few years back.

Here's Tommy's story since that game. Thought some may be interested.

Thanks for posting...I had stumbled on that earlier today. One of those things you look back on and see such supremely gifted young men, and then the dreaded injuries, TF and Brodner were amazing, and then the medical...good for Tommy!

I was at that game and that was a heck of a hit, but I never thought it was a cheap shot just two players giving it their all.
TF was in my opinion, effectively out of the game after that play.

The initial flagged hit was discussed for a very long time with the back and forth opinions back in 2012. Edgy folks , let’s all move on and let this years teams be the discussion. If JR66 or Tom want to mention any updates we could start another thread?

That escalated quickly. You’re 42 point favorites Corey. Try and handle this period of glory with a modicum of class.

To try and lift Hitter fans hopes, pray for heavy rains between now and Saturday.

Here’s what happened to last year’s LWE team in round two before we had turf.

https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/video/highlights-lincoln-way-east-15-st-charles-east-14

My kid actually made the above highlight reel as a junior last year which was cool but we ended up handing them the game at the end.
Good to see those highlights again - that was a scary game for sure.
Your coach needed to go for 2 following that last TD to make it 15-12 so that the FG would only force OT - not sure why he did not opt for 2 -- did that create some discussion at SCE? Also, notice our RT flinch a bit on the game winning FG - LWE got away with that one - not that 5 yards back would have made a difference but you never know.
That was a record day for me - I got to see LWE vs SCE; then Marist defeat Curie in Chicago (at least the 2nd H) and then made then trek to Darien to see the Vikings defeat the Hinsdale South Hornets!! . Not a bad day of football.

I always wondered what happened to Tommy after his NU days - thanks for sharing - he goes down as one of my top 5 most memorable and exciting HS players I have seen play - he seemed like a great kid too - I remember chatting with him in the Benedctine (sp) Stadium bathroom of all places after the Benet semi-final game that year - he ran crazy that game - one play he ran 70 yards for a TD but I swear he covered over 130 yards -

Guys, that hit was a lifetime ago to the teens on this years team. Better stat is that Z is 0-2 against these guys and I'm sure this sticks in his craw. I believe that he will have them ready with all weapons available.

From Disabato's column in the Southtown "“We’re 0-2 in our history against them,” Zvonar said. “Round two games aren’t generally real tough. This is an exception. They’re a great team and program. That said, we’re still excited to go up there.”

He's ready, hopefully the team will be as well.
