I recall what was reported and out there was an interview with Pike where he was specifically questioned about why he stopped recruiting a BIG and the response he gave didn’t refer to anyone by name but said that part of recruiting involved making sure there’s enough playing time to go around and keep people happy. I remember it being this punchline, but more than just this and pretty obvious Lathan was the underlying subject of the comments. Technically since his name wasn’t directly mentioned, I guess you could call it a rumor, but it wasn’t a rumor that Pike gave this response. I’m near certain that interview was reported as fact (to have happened).
I don't remember that at all. Do you have a link to that?

He may have seen that as a preferable answer to, "you dummy goose, I just didn't have the money to bring in the guys we need."

Since when do we take as gospel answers given by coaches in pressers?

It was discussed in one of Richie’s podcasts. The only way to locate it would be to relisten to all of them which I’m not doing.

Pike has spoken openly about the money issues in many interviews - so no, that’s not it. We were openly recruiting a BIG and then suddenly we weren’t. I’m sure if we could’ve afforded a surefire day one starter, it would’ve been a non-issue, but the guys in our price range were all going to be question marks. Pike decided it wasn’t worth risking Lathan walking out the door and then us not securing someone else. Flash backs to Paul and Cam walking out or whatever. In any case - this wasn’t a rumor that Richie repeated. He was recounting a specific response from Pike in an actual interview when asked about this.

If it was an interview with Pikiell, it must be somewhere outside of Richie's podcasts.

It might’ve been a direct conversation with Richie and TKR where they asked and he answered the question rather than a formal “interview”. It was a long time ago, and it would take forever to dig up the string (especially with the new website). The point is, I’m very certain Richie reported that he was repeating what Pike had said, not a rumor that he had heard third hand. Richie addressed it again later in future podcasts and never wavered.
