By the Numbers: Offense - 2023/2024 to 2025 (Updated after the Reliaquest Bowl)

UPDATED:

The 2025 regular season has come to an end. While we still have a bowl to play, I wanted to give everyone the updated numbers for the offense in the meantime. Once again, Tim Lester has improved the offense, going from #72 in the nation to #54. This puts us higher than programs like Clemson, Iowa State, Michigan, Auburn, and Oklahoma. There are 136 programs in the nation, which puts us in the top 45% of offenses. While there is still a lot of work to be done, especially for the pass game, we are no longer in the basement of college football offenses. A far cry from when baby Brian was around. Thanks Tim!

Below I have included the numbers for the 2025 season along side the 23 and 24 seasons. Always remember, ignore ol' Eyes, and support the Hawkeyes!

penalties almost even which tells me they were and are disciplined. I like the third down conversion rate stats, when I get to see the tale of the tape at the end of a game. this shows a lot better first downs. rushing yds of course are better with KJ. I dunno , we shall see this yr. I am not sold on gronk as a QB yet, he needs to play.

My expectation is that when the offense comes on the field I will feel like it's an opportunity to move the chains and score, instead of the dread feeling I had 2 years ago waiting for something bad to happen.

Tim Lester year 2
Experienced OL
Really good, experienced QB
Talented RB's and receivers

There really aren't any excuses this year.

"Fair" to who?

I think it's fair to say every Iowa fan knows where the offense was in '23.

I think it's fair to say it's laughable to try to draw any inference about the program from '23

Rushing was so much better last year, but passing was still terrible. Rushing will likely drop this year, so the Hawks will need passing to take a big leap forward.

Good stuff, thx, and 2024 was a huge jump from Brian especially in points per game, about 80%-85% more. That is the Big Measure

He'll just brush everything off like he always does when he can't argue. Any mention of offense gets him upset. I simply posted this thread as a reference on where we are at statistically before and after Tim Lester, yet he assumes some kind of malice.

Any season or group of seasons (there are 26 of them) that not only wasn't clearly an outlier for the program, but also wasn’t an outlier for reasons much out of the control of the staff

Why post the '23 numbers if you aren’t trying to say anything with them?

Remember, all this huffing and puffing is because I posted last year's stats and also posted 23's stats to give them a direct comparison to see if Lester improved the offense or not. Just amazing. Can't get any more anti Hawkeye than being upset at an improvement on one of the aspects of the game.

Yeah, eyes is as anti Hawkeye as they come. Not a true fan at all. He gives all of us TRUE Hawkeye fans a bad name with his nonsensical.

So cherry pick seasons where everything went right? There will be "something" disqualifying for every argument made based on your past posting history. Groups of seasons doesn't really work when comparing against one. The fairest assessment may be season 1 of each OC compared to the last season of the prior and basing respective change on that. I don’t have a good answer in all honesty.

Again, everyone knows the '24 offense improved from the last place '23 offense.

I'm not mad about that.

I was poking fun at your post.

I was poking fun at your overall cluelessness. You hang around these boards every day. Not that Lester hasn't also had his value, but surely somewhere you read where KF told us (before Lester was even hired) the offense would be much better, as the o-line would be in a good place

Yes, '22 and '23 were clearly the outlier, as the offense finished last and wasn't functional.

Given the fact that they were successive seasons, that both contained the same foundational problem, and were only 2 of 26 seasons, it's plenty clear to see it as a two year outlier.

'21 was a functioning offense, just like every other season. So it would rank at the bottom of the range of those functioning offenses. That team had games of 34, 27, 30, 51, 27, 33, 28. Not the non-functioning offense characteristic of the outlier teams

to get this post back on track (if possible) I would just postulate that last year's success may have been partly or even largel due to having an above average running back. I really hope there is more to it than that, but I do not know. we shall soon see.

I thought last years success was largely due to the O-Line.. they were fantastic... and it would be amazing if they are fantastic again this season.

they are the ones that make it possible for playmakers to make plays.

I’m sure that had a lot to do with it, as did adding more motion. And while still not at an acceptable level, there was a bit of an uptick in the passing game.

Hopefully Gronowski is the real deal and can improve on that even further.

The funniest part is that no one is arguing that. But why diminish the contributions of other positions on the field? Last time I checked, OLineman dont run the ball, hand off the ball, or catch the ball. It's almost like every position has a unique and important role to play in this team sport!

Haven't seen any other positions being diminished, myself.

Some more than important than others
