Not sure what to take from the game but ISU did play a decent game but didn’t ruffle my feathers at all. Or is KSU that bad? I don’t want to take away from their win as much as I despise them but neither looked that great and probably first game jitters …

I think both KSU and ISU have good teams that will win a lot of games. Travel to Ireland and playing in the rain for Game 1 certainly help them look overly sharp.

ISU won and evenly matched game. In other words they figured out a way to win. They used to lose most of those kinds of games.

Brecht look really good at times, not so much at other times. Again, game 1. For sure he has a strong arm and can make all the throws.

The RB looks pretty good, but he doesn't scare me, The OL opened some holes for him in the second half.

In short, while ISU wasn't really impressive, they looked good enough to be able beat the Hawks.

As far as a match up between isu and the hawks, I will wait for Iowa's first game. If Iowa's passing game looks sharp and Gronk looks accurate I will be way more upbeat about Iowa's chances. I dont think playing on the road at ISU shakes up many hawk players and Gronk has played on the road in some big games, even at Kinnick.

I expect Iowa's pass coverage will be better than KState's based on what I have read. I watched the first 10 minutes and didnt see a ton of great stuff by either team.

I thought ISU's left tackle looked like a revolving door on pass pro. and maybe some of the other linemen also.

KState makes a lot of mistakes just like last year, Iowa usually doesnt make a lot of mistakes

They played another very good football team and won. They played much better in the second half and made a couple of big plays to win the game.
This is probably the best ISU team they have had in many years.
The weather was a huge factor, especially in the first half. The playing surface, not being designed for American football, was a negative factor, too. These two factors affected both teams equally.
The Iowa/Iowa State game will be close, lower scoring (probably) and decided by turn overs (like most every other game they play).

After a first half of sloppy play by both teams , the second half was pretty good. Brecht and Johnson both played well, Johnson with his legs, Brecht as a QB. Two touchdowns to 2 freshman receivers. They will only improve.

KState looked awful. Literally gave the clones the game with all the turnovers. The clone OLine was holding on for dear life and didn't get a single penalty (from memory).

Brecht is legit, the game isn't too big for him. Clone D was pretty good against the run.

If that is the team Iowa sees in Ames, I am not concerned.

Their run game in second half did.

Campbell’s willingness to go for it on 4th and 3 did also.

From what I got from this game is that we should stop their run and run all over them. Keep Rocco in check and we should win easily

Good win in National spotlight. Both teams looked sloppy at times which is to be expected, but ISU played better when it mattered most.

I like Iowa in the trenches and ISU lost a lot at wr that it doesn’t look like they replaced.

It’ll be another close one in two weeks. If MG is as advertised I like our chances as I believe we’re better everywhere else.

First game of the season and it was like a bowl trip on steroids against a conference foe. Won in less-than-ideal conditions, with some risky and gutsy calls mixed in, against the team most predicted to win the Big XII this year.

Stats, the "eyeball test", and our ingrained dislike notwithstanding, by definition you pretty much have to acknowledge, even if begrudgingly, that the win by Ames Community College's football squad was impressive yesterday.

ISU's play calling on offense is underrated. I remember well that late-game wheel route their OC dialed up last year that torched us and put them in position for the FG at the end. Saw some more great calls in the game yesterday. It's a plus in their favor, IMO.

Bect looks really good, it appears they have some good recievers and tight ends. Solid rb, the defense looked fast. The game was just weird. Glad they won so we can kick their undefeated ***

Against Albany, Iowa should look like the Pittsburgh Steelers playing the Pennsylvania mudhens...Idaho smashed these guys 41-14. It IS a good game to get a new QB some easy reps in live action...so that's a big plus. Not sure it will tell you anthing...good or bad...about what kind of team Iowa has.

Agree. As always, the ISU-Iowa game will be a hard fight for both teams...and will come down to who takes best care of the ball and who wants it the most.

I wonder where those predictions came from. K State was 5-4 in conference last year and lost 3 of their last 4 before beating Rutgers in the Rate Bowl. They looked terrible yesterday.

Becht is a good QB, throws a nice ball, can run a little and makes good decisions, doesn't seem to get rattled. They always have WRs who emerge and end up being solid. Looks like they have 2 good TEs. Their OL got abused for much of the game. Their D stepped up big when they needed to for some key stops, Heacock is a really good DC who more often than not has his guys in the right position to make plays.

All that said, that was not a good KSU team they beat yesterday. Still, having played a tough game against a conference rival is an advantage IMO.

My guess it'll be another close, hard fought game in Ames that ISU should win.

Objectively speaking, they are a top 25 team. Their defense is going to be formidable and their quarterback is a veteran who is really good. I also like their TEs and believe their receivers will be okay.

The only thing I am not impressed with is their running backs. They are pretty meh.

Kansas State has a lot to fix. They looked pretty average to me, especially the quarterback that the commentators were pumping up so much.

Given Iowa’s lack of offensive talent the last five years, that isn’t saying much.

Even with serious question marks in the secondary, Iowa’s defense is significantly better than K-State’s. The weather had a lot to do with why Iowa State didn’t put up 30 +.

If Iowa’s offense is halfway respectable and they don’t lose the turnover battle, they should beat Iowa State. Iowa’s secondary would have to be absolutely atrocious for Iowa to lose if their offense can manage 24 + points and not turn the ball over.

This Iowa State team is not as good as last year’s team. Not even close. The wide receivers they have replacing two second round draft picks are decent but not great. KSU’s secondary is just that bad.

They are a top 25 team IMO, but they do not have an 11-win squad.

Going for it on like 4th and 2 at your own 30 with over 8 minutes left was a stupid call

Iowa will have to dominate the run game to win. ISU will score, Brecht and their OC will find holes against our secondary.

Pretty hard to tell for either team given they have not played anybody else. But I thought for the most part both teams exhibited sound offenses na defense. I guess at this point I would lean to they are both pretty good football teams. JMO

This game like always will come down to turnovers, I am surprised that so many squawk fans just think that losing Johnson, who was your offense last season is not a big deal and his production will be replaced, along with losing all the returning starters you lost on a defense that was good not great last season. Your new QB better be in the running for the Heisman or at least very good, and everyone of the new defenders better be as good if not better than the players they are replacing or its going to be a .500 season with your schedule.

National spotlight isn't gonna help anymore with recruiting. They don't have the money to pay recruits. Its a downward slope for.them.
