Looks like Hank Brown is 2nd string
Jackson Stratton is sort of the forgotten man here.
Assuming he's healthy, I'm curious to see where he fits in later on this season.

To be fair Stratton won both games he started last year.
Like most fans I am a lot more relieved about Iowa's QB situation after previous years of anxiety. I'm not looking for an All-Big Ten quarterback, just a reasonably capable guy who will do more correct than incorrect.
For now. If Gronowski slips or gets hurt I think most of us feel pretty good about Brown.
We are all going to enjoy the QB play this season and see completions made and plays (series) extended because of said play. Relax and enjoy the ride! The WR 's are going to be the best we've seen since the 2009 and 2010 seasons. For the first time, in ever?, this season will depend on the D.
I think he will be forgotten then transfer next year
I give him credit for stepping in last year as a walk-on.
First drive in, Stratton threw a td. I thought he had huge upside.

If all the QB's are better than Jackson, I feel better about the QB group than I have in years.
Army had more passing yards (93) than Iowa yesterday
Nebraska's second string, true freshman QB (Lateef) threw for 128 yards against Akron in mop up duty.

Stratton won zero games. His team beat a couple awful opponents by running the ball over and over.
To be fair. It has been a long time since an Iowa QB has “won a game” .
I thought Gronowski was fine this game. It was obvious nobody was getting open. The one deep ball we got a PI out of it, didn't seem to ever try again
This. Mark and the running game are the reason we were even the game.
Don't forget the multiple drops that we saw on well placed balls.
The RUN, RUN, Pass, punt the first few drives killed us. Remember.... the reason the clowns got their 1st FG.... Great field position after Kirk took the ball first like a damn idiot.
Should have gone to that "mesh" read option much sooner and have at least one receiver running a double move. ISU was crashing down so hard on every play and jumping routes, you have to run some routes and make them respect a deep threat.

Lipstick on a pig. It's pretty obvious that the staff has no more confidence in MG's throwing abilities than the fans today, and that's saying something.
It's not all Gronowski's fault. He has absolutely nowhere to go with the football. The route trees are awful and Iowa's receivers get zero separation, same ****, different year. These guys didnt come to Iowa as bad QBs. They're handcuffed so bad at Iowa
Week 1 he had wide open receivers he either didn’t see or just made horrible throws. I wasn’t at the game Saturday so I don’t know if receivers were not getting open, but that’s what I hear. I do think the speed of this level of football is too fast for MG right now. I also think the fact that we absolutely refuse to challenge the defense vertically makes the game played in a phone booth. It’s nearly impossible to have an effective offense with 0 threat of throwing deep.
When you don't force the defense to cover the entire field, you do their job for them.
The “best player in the team” is always the back-up quarterback.

Back in my day (the 60’s) when Eddie P. was the QB, the crowds chanted “We want Lawrence!” When Larry Lawrence was starting at QB, the crowds chanted, “Put in Cilek”….
It’s never changed, regardless of the coach, regardless of the players involved. Lauterber, Commings, Fry and now Ferentz…

Now THAT stat impresses me! However, what I saw of that game, they ran the hell out of the valley, too. K-State’s defense wasn’t real strong.

Iowa’s passing game is in a big hurt now with the injuries sustained to date. There are a lot of reasons for UIowa’s aerial shortcomings…and I don’t think it really rests with the QB. UIowa just isn’t very deep at receiver talent. They do do other things well, however. Next 3 games are gonna be tell-tale for the balance of the season. There is no need to doubt the Hawks will be a better team come November… but the quality of the opposition increases, too.
The QB is easily the weakest link. This year they have a better offensive line and essentially the same receiver corps with another year to learn the system and yet somehow they are much worse than even that group was. The biggest difference in personnel is at QB. Sullivan who was in a brand new system himself was light years more effective than Gronowski has been. He's been beyond horrible so far.
Strictly opinion. Sullivan was good at what he was asked to do…in the red zone he was efficient. Gronowski is asked to do much more…and right now he has fewer tools to work with.
