A few weeks ago the Aces were behind the Fever in the standings. Their season was a mess. They lost by over 50 points, at home, to the Lynx. Since that game they've won eight straight.

The Fever were kinda cocky preseason. New management, a new head coach, a new logo, "a big 3," and veteran players brought in, in hopes of a championship.

So much for that. Time for a new logo; or better yet, skip the logo.

The WNBA is a $#it show. And if you didn't know that before, well, ....

Yea, the assistant coach who said they were getting CC22 prepared to "destroy" everything that came at her, sure didn't age well.......

Agree I may be rushing it. Good point. It can take star players time to win a title. But someone like Wilson had to have faith in the organization to stay around. Aces were the best team in the league going into her last year of rookie contract. She saw results.

I just think it will be fascinating to see how the Fever approach the offseason and how they view their roster.

CC won’t be signing a one year contract after yea 4. So she will want an idea on the competency of the organization.
Of course all this is extremely muddled with the CBA expired and literally NO one knows whats going to happen with that. The entire league will be scrambling IF the players actually get real, and sign to a contract and adjust the crazy rev share they think they're entitled to.....

I guess I'm more of an optimist. All of the preseason moves looked like winners based on past performance of players. The Bonner situation was bizarre, but it could be blamed on the fever front office and coaching if promises were made. Otherwise, she is just an immature 37-year old who pouted and forced a trade effing the fever over big time. Caitlin is still the main draw in the W, and I think KM and AB would want to play with her more. I think Cunningham and Hull like being on the fever too. There have to be a few missing pieces that can be acquired in free agency, and then maybe they draft Stuelke to be a rim runner. I also think that perhaps the rest of the league may come around on Caitlin in year 3, given how ratings and interest tanked this season with her out, and they may want to hitch their wagon to the gravy train.
The issue being WHEN and IF a CBA gets hammered out, and what that, and the new salary cap looks like. None of this is in a vacumm. As to your last point, I wouldn't hold my breath...

It will be interesting to see what the new CBA looks like. Unless I am reading/interpreting things wrong, the Fever, as of now, could hold on to CC for at least 8 total seasons (whether CC likes it or not).

Right now:
a team holds rights to a drafted rookie for a total of 4 years. This is structured as a 3-year contract with a team option for a 4th year.

After 4 years, the player becomes a Restricted Free Agent (RFA), but as you will read, the Fever can hold on to CC for at least a couple more years by matching any other team's offer (keeps CC in Indy for at least a total of 6 seasons). But CC could then be cored for up to 2 times (keeps CC in Indiana for at least a total of 8 seasons).

An RFA is a player with 4 years of service whose contract has expired and who receives a qualifying offer from their previous team.

To provide further context, for a player who is out of contract and has four years of service in the WNBA (coming off their fourth-year team option in a Rookie Scale contract, or otherwise), the team can send a Restricted Qualifying Offer to the player between January 11th to January 20th. If the team decides not to offer a Qualifying Offer (QO), the player will be a Free Agent on February 1st.

If the club declined to offer a Qualifying Offer, the player would become an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team starting on February 1st.

Starting on January 21st, RFAs can negotiate an offer sheet with a team other than their last team. However, that player’s prior team has a “Right of First Refusal” (the team can match the offer sheet.) If the team matches the offer sheet, the player signs a contract with the original team on the terms agreed upon with the new club.

(Offer sheets must be for a multi-year contract.)

Core Players:

“Coring a Player” is almost the WNBA’s version of a franchise tag. An organization can, at maximum, core one veteran free agent.

Teams can prevent a player from becoming an unrestricted free agent by designating them as a "core" player. This gives the team exclusive negotiating rights and guarantees a one-year, supermax contract

A WNBA player can be designated as a "core" player a maximum of two times in their career.

A Core Qualifying Offer is a fully guaranteed one-year deal worth the supermax that both UFA and RFA’s are eligible for. A Core Designation contract is a one-year deal on the maximum base salary.

If a player receives a Core Designation, the team that designates them as such is the only team with which a player can sign or negotiate a contract during the free agency period. But the team and player can still negotiate a move elsewhere if both parties desire.

Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA)

A UFA is a player who can negotiate with any team during the free agency period without hindrance. They can negotiate contracts starting on January 21st and, on February 1st, enter into a negotiated agreement.

Look for some of that free agent language to change under a new CBA.....

The roster they had at the beginning of the season ( everyone healthy including CC) would have been a top 3/4 roster. Especially if CC had continued on her trajectory from last season. There was plenty of reason for optimism going into the season. Nobody thought these kind of injuries would play out. Look what's happened to New York once Stewie got hurt. Minnesota is the only team that has been able to withstand an injury to a key player. Their depth is ridiculous. Losing CC who basically handled the ball 95% of the time last year for basically the entire season the Fever have actually done very well considering everything that has happened to them.

Of course this is predicated upon there not being a lockout. As to my last point, I also am not holding my breath...

Engelbert's afraid of the backlash she would receive from the players.
You are correct, they need to get someone in there that isn't afraid to clean it up and suspend players for flagrant stuff. And suspend them again if they have to. Pretty soon they'll get the idea. Just like hanging onto, grabbing, holding cc, call fouls till they get the hint they can't do that.

Where did you hear that?
I heard something similar, that they rejected a 4x pay increase.

"Per Ogwumike, the WNBA's latest offer to its players -- while dramatically increasing the salary cap and maximum base salaries, which a league source suggested could quadruple to at least $1 million from their current $249,244 -- follows the same model as the current CBA."

If they stick to that there won't be a season next year. The players will literally shoot themselves in the foot. They don't have nearly the leverage they think they do. The league could lock them out all next season, and SAVE money.

I watched another Ben Daniel Podcast on Youtube, and was going to put the thing up on here, but there's some language in there that might not be appropriate lol.
If you want to check it out, the title is:
"Indiana Fever suddenly remember Caitlin Clark suffered ankle injury..." :D

Time travelers, conspiracies, etc lol. I recommend it.

Makes you wonder who's giving the orders and what the league directives are?

Clowns are going to piss this away. When LeBron starts the new 6 men's teams and 6 women's team international league backed by the Saudi's oil money, just like LIV golf, CC is going to be first on their list. May be the best for 70 players to leave the W.

Ugh.... Paige Bueckers shot 17-21 FG for 44 points, tying a rookie record, but Kelsey Plum got free and hit an easy mid-lane floater at the buzzer to win the game. A Sparks loss would have really helped the Fever.

Clark has said on multiple occasions that it has been her dream since she was a little girl to play in the WNBA. Do you really think that she will now walk away from the WNBA in order to play in a flimsy 6-team international league?

She doesn’t need the money and all the action that matters will still be in the WNBA.

That’s not to say that the WNBA is perfect. Reforms are obviously needed. Sack Engelbert and hire a Commissioner with a more expansive vision and an aggressive action plan, preferably someone with professional basketball experience - that’s a good first step IMO.

Crazy performance and a surprisingly good game between a bad team and a mediocre team.

And the league needs nights like that when CC is not involved to continue to grow.

I still can't believe what owners are paying for a WNBA franchise.

$250 Million: for an expansion franchise

$325 Million: what the Celtics' minority owner was going to pay to move the Sun to Boston.

Note, however, that the WNBA stepped in.

From ESPN:

The Mohegan tribe, which has owned the franchise since buying and relocating the Orlando Miracle in 2003, is seeking clarity on the league's desired path forward for the organization, sources said, after an agreement to sell the team to a group led by former Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca was met with resistance from the league office.

After news broke of the deal's existence -- and Pagliuca's eventual plan to relocate the franchise to Boston -- a league statement emphasized that "relocation decisions are made by the WNBA Board of Governors and not by individual teams," and that cities that have already gone through the expansion process have priority over Boston, which did not submit an expansion bid in any of the three recent expansion rounds over the past three years.
