Lol we know you’re joking but that is interesting to think about. Was Robbinsville going on this run with or without Gentry lighting that fuse about getting better? Did that statement push the program to the current level?
He's not joking but Robbinsville fans have earned their chance to crow a little. The fact is Robbinsville's the top dog in the conference right now and they'll likely win the conference the next 2 years as well unless Cuttler gets hurt again. But this stuff ebbs and flows just like anything else. I could point out Walsh's all time record against Murphy or Robbinsville's all time record against Murphy but it isn't relevant to the here and now. Robbinsville is the face of the conference right now. Hopefully Murphy can get back to the top again before consolidation happens, if delayed a bit Murphy will have their time in the sun again before closure.

The good thing is if Cutler does get hurt, we have another Adams that will be right behind him more than likely….. don’t wish an injury on nobody just stating that we will be pretty deep next year at running back

2014 was Walsh 7th year. I figure that's about how long it takes to get a system truly implemented.
Nah I'd say about 3 years. That's how about how long it took Gentry at Murphy and Robbinsville was humming good by Dee's 3rd year, the 2009 Robbinsville team could've easily won state. Robbinsville just ran into some loaded Swain and Murphy teams during Dee's first 7 years. The talent Robbinsville had during that period was for the most part very good. Robbinsville should've won the conference outright in '09 though talent wise.

Didn't Dee almost beat Murphy in the 2012 or 13 playoffs? Correct me if I'm wrong

Yes, Murphy beat Robbinsville by 34 at Big Oaks in '12 and they rematched in the playoffs at The Hill and Murphy only one by 8 in the rematch. That was the only varsity Murphy team with Michael Curry at QB, transferred at the end of the year for baseball.

That '12 Murphy team lost to Plymouth in the state title game after beating a loaded Albemarle team in the playoffs. I still to this day wonder how the trajectory of the Murphy '10-'12 teams would've been different with Jayvon McCullough on the field. Murphy loses a nailbiter in '10 to Wallace Rose Hill in the title game and another nailbiter in the title game to Plymouth in '12, Murphy wins both of those games if he doesn't transfer out. He was the best defensive player on the field for Murphy in '09 playoffs against Albemarle as a freshman. Surefire college football potential at a good level had he stuck with football but he followed his hoops fantasy and that lead him out the door at Murphy. And yet he still ended up starting for a D3 school in football despite playing hoops at North Forsyth. Point is he could've played at higher level than that had he focused on football and stayed at Murphy.

If Murphy is still around in say, ‘25 thru ‘27, and if the current group of kids on the mite team stay together, I will guarantee right now, at some point during those years, they will dominate the SMC and very possibly the rest of 1a. Mark it down.

Omg back to the pee wees..lol
It’s not that far off partner. Enjoy your time, I promise it won’t last forever.

I don’t know if you were around this board in 2008 or not, but I said then that Murphy’s midget team would be a beast at the varsity level. That group played in three straight state title games. I see the same potential in this current group of mites.

I said 7 years because it takes that long for the peewee to implement your system and become seniors. Those kids have play their entire career under the same system.

I thought everyone on here said that great youth teams don’t always make great HS teams !!! I guess that is only if you’re Murphy or Robbinsville !!!!!
Looks like the Wildcats are doing pretty well in that area too!

It’s true that great youth teams don’t always pan out in high school, but some of the talent at the youth level is so obvious that you can’t miss it. It’s really up to the kids to keep working hard (and the parents and coaches to make sure they do) if they want to be good in high school too.

What isn't lasting forever is Murphy and Rville's stronghold on the conference. This year conference was as competitive across the board as it has been in awhile. But until then, somebody's gonna have to knock Rville off to prove my theory correct.

That being said, Murphy and Rville will remain in the best positions to continue to win conference. Murphy is a big enough school that they will continue to have decent talent. Rville right now has a culture that is nowhere near matched in the conference. The only way that changes is when Walsh retires the next coach sucks. And I don't see that happening.

Swain is big enough and well coached enough to compete, but their program is on the downhill right now. For the sake of the competition of the conference, I hope that changes.

Of the small schools, Cherokee and Andrews are both very dangerous. Both teams are well coached. Andrews is very young and will be tough for everybody next year. The biggest problem with these two is being the two smallest schools they will not have the talent and size year in year out to compete.

Hayesville has some of the most potential to be really good, but that won't change very much until they are no longer a basketball and baseball school.

A lot of it depends on how that success is coming to those youth teams. The ones with that 1 fast kid that out runs everyone on quick pitch tend to fall off. Once people catch him and learn how to contain that team can struggle.

What if the new school stays 1A/SMC?

If anyone can take 850 and turn it into 650 it is Murphy. Seems like going be 4 schools on same campus.

Cherokee county
EC
Oaks Academy
Charter School.
I remember Murphy guys saying they didn't have to count The Oaks Academy be cause it was on a different campus. Has something changed?

Either way the school will have zero titles unless they keep the name Murphy Bulldogs. The new school won't be in Murphy and I don't see Andrews or HD being ok with that name.

Agreed. Becomes harder and harder for one man to beat a team. By JVs, it's almost impossible with the regular talent that comes through the conference. We've all seen the highlights of people like Barry Sanders who were able to beat an entire team in high school, but we never see that level of talent at the skill positions.

The EC and Oaks are separate schools. They won't count towards the enrollment of the new school. I don't know what the biggest school in 1a is, but I'm sure it's smaller than what this school is. But if enrollment drops, or the enrollments at EC and Oaks increase I can totally see this school being 1a. I think the county controls the enrollments at those two schools so I'm pretty sure they have have the option to "flip the 1a lever" if they choose to do so. That being said, that would be pretty bad to make education decisions based on sports. But don't tell me you wouldn't want Graham county to do it if the shoe was on the other foot haha.

Robbinsville is in a down year now. The gap between Robbinsville and the rest of the SMC will be larger next two years. With the exception of Andrews. They could win it next year.

Robbinsville and Cherokee are the only schools that have grown or stayed the same over the last few years. I think Cherokee is about 335/340 and Robbinsville is 370/375 area.

Or the new school could add up all the titles won by Murphy and Andrews in every sport and claim all of them. Could also count any titles HD has. Technically they all belong to Cherokee County, so there you go.

In my opinion we have come to a point in NC that I feel like adm is not the best or fairest way to divide for athletics. EC’s, prep’s, charter’s, academies have gotten too big and are skewing the numbers too much. Even a Tarboro fan last week said the EC and Prep took all the straight A students and they dropped to 1a. For athletics I think there should be a system that looks at the number of students living in the school district lines. Athletes should be able to take the EC classes and play sports if they choose. I have never understood why schools decided not to allow that in the first place.

Also if the EC or Charter has sports they get placed along with the highest class their school board covers. So for example if the Cherokee county school is 2a then the Charter would have to play 2a sports no matter the numbers of students. This should help push a lot of those up 1 or 2 classes. Maybe that would make some of the country club sports little more fair to small public school kids.

I am not trolling or jabbing any schools just thinking of things that could be fair all the way around academically and athletically. Why should the starting QB for a school not get to take the college prep classes if he has plans to go be an engineer of some kind. Thoughts?

True. But that’s not the case with the team I’m talking about. That team has plenty of weapons, and one kid in particular that is gonna be a major headache to any team that he ever steps on the field against.

What's the kid's name? I don't have time to keep up with youth league ball anymore but I've heard a lot of good things about this group from people whose opinion I trust, each one has said they are legit, not youth league bravado. I know Coach Watson's twins were on the team and wasn't Coach Gutierrez's youngest son too?

Yes Coach Gutierrez’s son is on the team (kid is a beast too…heck of an arm and can run). The kid I’m talking about is a Davis. Wears number 5. Those two are gonna tear this conference up.

Lordy so now we're talking about youth football arm strength. Murphy has really sold out to slinging the ball around huh? lol
