Serious question about playoffs

does anyone else think that the NCHSAA will move the playoffs back a week. I talked to a friend who teaches and coaches at Lumberton and he thinks that the flooding there is so bad they may not play for another 2 weeks. I-40 to Wilmington looks more like a river than a highway. So with this weeks games already cancelled out east will the NCHSAA move the start of football playoffs back? Thoughts

Does not look good.I do not see the NCHSAA wanting to play beyond Christmas.May need to shorten the playoffs.

The only other option is play catch up and do 2 games in a week ....however that would be brutal . There really is no good answer .

I just left from Lumberton and staying/working in Wilmington and it’s a wreck down here I doubt they have football for a while. I’m passing east Bladen high school and the parking lot was full of rescue vehicles and workers

Yea right. And miss out on their money? Fat chance.
My point being they would rather get some kind of playoff format in if possible.Botttom line is it is really bad down there and is effecting a lot of people.Football takes a back burner for now.

I totally agree with you. I'm just saying, they'll get their money one way or the other.

Start playoffs a week later and cut teams from 32 to 16 in each class... That would save another week and just push state championships back 1 week

I know football is their bread and butter money maker. They have to consider the winter sports in this too. Wrestling and Basketball go long enough without their fall sports athletes, to hold them out longer cant happen. Simple way to handle it is to cut down on the teams and cut their losses.....I wont hold my breath though

I really think cutting out the first round games is a possibility. I posted this same thing on another board ( and called them crap games ) . Maybe I shouldn't have called them that but they are generally terrible. Someone replied that some of the teams need that game to get some more money for their program and there were some upsets in the first round. Most of the games in the first round are boring and unwatchable. I did a little research and came up with this.

Of the 96 first round games last year there were 19 lower seeds that actually won. 7 of those were the 9 seed over the 8 so it isn’t that big a deal. So let’s just say really just 12 upsets out of 96. 12.5%

The average score was 40-14

I understand that some schools could use the gate and concession money but a lot of times the school has to travel so that is just more money they don't have or it pushes their budget really thin. If that's the case why play. I know McDowell declined a playoff berth a couple of years ago. If push came to shove, I still say scrap the first round. In my opinion the playoffs are watered down with teams with .500 or worse records and don't belong in the playoffs to begin with.

I can remember when I was a Junior in high school ( back in the '80's :)) we went 8-2 and didn't get in the playoffs. Win or get left out.

I remember South Point losing to Weddington in the first round, South Point a 1 seed, might have only lost one or two games the whole season...SP’s QB went down during the Weddington game and that was it...biggest upset I can remember. Other than that, high school football is not March Madness. Usually the better team will win. I say cancel the first round if we can’t extend the season

If round one is cancelled you can cut out about 20 teams out of the playoffs so far from the west

I’ve been wondering the same thing about the playoffs. Also with most teams starting conference play it can be tough playing two games in a week if it comes to that. There may be no other choice but to shrink the playoffs by at least one round and extend to the Christmas holiday.

In 2016 we finish 9-2 and go on the road to North Forsythe who finished 5-6.

Burns finished in a 3 way tie for 2nd place and probably lost the coin flip seeding them 4th in conference. No clue about NF. they finished 4th in their conference also. Go figure.

Since last week was non conf games, teams do not have to make them up for playoff purposes. If this week is washed out then these games can be moved to the first friday after regular season ends. Western teams will have an open week and all teams begin play the following week. Pushes the championships back 1 week. Its happened before when North Gaston sued somebody. Don't remember the year.

I don’t know what the hell a “FORFIED” is but sure, my mighty Crest Chargers can be the first “FORFIED” team on the list this year in the first round game.

Yes you are correct. That playoff was also pushed back a week due to hurricane Matthew

They will most likely not go more than one week. Who knows though. The title games are scheduled for December 8th. Two weeks added puts them on December 22d with Christmas that Tuesday. If they have weather issues, which is more likely the later the date, then it becomes a real big cluster!!! Games on Sunday before Christmas, real bad. Games on Christmas Eve, ain't happening. Do not expect they would play games after Christmas.

If one week is added to the schedule keep the playoffs at five rounds with the title games one week later.
If two weeks are added to the schedule drop the playoffs to four rounds with the title games one week later still.

Yea right. And miss out on their money? Fat chance.

With the new alignment the NCHSAA requested 1A and 4A to go to four rounds with their title games week before 2A and 3A. Huge resistance from the schools. Compromise was 48 teams resulting in five rounds with first round byes.

What are Winter sports teams that have a significant amount of student-athletes playing football for teams that go deep in playoffs supposed to do? Most teams for basketball show schedules not starting games until late November/early December to begin with due to football. If pushed back even a week, that causes more re-scheduling. Football could in the future start a week earlier in August. Could the football finals be adjusted based on venue availability?

One thing to consider when pushing these games back as well are home games for NC State, UNC and Carolina Hurricanes. That can add some complications for parking. I know Kenan and DES aren't right next to each other like Carter Finley and PNC but parking on campus isn't the most friendly at Chapel Hill.

This isn’t the first time this has happened, a realistic view would be to push it back a week most teams on the eastern part of the state haven’t started Conf play that is what gets you in the playoffs. Having that extra week gives the Western teams a extra Bye week. Some of these eastern teams may not even suit up for another 2 weeks or get maybe 4 games in. Some cant even practice yet they may have to play games at a neutral site on a Saturday just to catch up. Hopefully it gets resolved probably won’t but any salvage of the season is good especially for the Seniors. Let’s hope this works out. This is something that should be written in the rules we have a storm of some sort every year. Always plan for the worst and keep everyone prepared

I say push the season back by a week like was done with Matthew. The schools that have to make up 2 or 3 conference games could start playing them every 5 days. Friday-Wednesday-Monday-Saturday-Thursday-Tuesday. Then you play 6 games in about 4 weeks. Not sure what else they can do. Extending the season by 2 weeks is not reasonable for a lot of reasons and although I wouldn't mind them cutting out the first round of playoffs I don't think that will happen either. $$

I would like to see the NCHSAA being a little more out front and at least giving more information about what they are considering.

Most schools have played two games before the the first day of classes. Most people want to start the season a week earlier.

The biggest issues with Duke and UNC are normally graduation and basketball games interfering.

With the new alignment the NCHSAA requested 1A and 4A to go to four rounds with their title games week before 2A and 3A. If they were willing to do it then I think they would do it for all classifications under these conditions. The schools seem to be more determined to keep the playoff rounds, qualifiers, and champions higher more than the NCHSAA.

I was told the reason they have not made a definitive statement is due to the unknown circumstance with many counties. It appears some counties may miss three scheduled games. I do think they should address this publicly with what options they are looking at.

We did. We should have beaten y’all that year. We blew our chance to be the #1 3A seed out of the SMAC. But that North Forsyth game should have been at Burns!
