Crest vs. Shelby

How about we get a thread that offers some actual analysis/prognostication of this football game. If you want to keep the mindless jawing going, then please keep it in one of the other threads (not likely to happen, I'm sure).

I'll start.
  • Crest has to be able to keep the ball enough on offense to limit opportunities for Shelby's offense and give the Crest defense time to rest. In addition, Crest defense must not allow any 2-3 play scoring drives. Must make Shelby drive length of field.
  • Shelby's defense has not been challenged very much. Can Crest's offense give them enough of a challenge to see how Shelby's defense will respond?
  • Both teams are penalty-prone. Let's hope both can control those to keep the game sharp. Nobody wants to watch a hundred penalties mar this game.
  • Special teams will be a factor somehow. Last year Crest had a big punt return for a touchdown. Both teams will try to stay away from that. How will the kicking games turn out?

Please, please, please don't do the stupid sky kicks. I'm pretty sure Crest's average starting field position was about their own 40 if not better last year because of those dumb kicks. Kick the ball deep and if they run it back then oh well. That, imo, cost us the game last year. The test will be the Crest OL against the Shelby DL and LBs. I believe we will have been more tested by Burns' offense than by Crest's.

Only two more sleeps!

Nobody likes the sky pooch kicks. However, coaches choose them to eliminate the big play from the realm of possibility. I understand where they are coming from in that regard. Crest does them all the time, too.

Exactly right, that it was beat us last year. I believe they ran 2 back for tds and 1 back inside the 10.

I don't think Crest had a kickoff return for TD last year, but there was a punt return for TD.

Edit: I went back to check the tapes. Crest had a 77-yard kickoff return that did NOT go for a TD (early in the game). Crest did have a 93-yard punt return TD later on. Shelby punter actually did a good job all night of kicking away from danger (that TD was not his fault, obviously).

Not only does Crest need to avoid penalties they need to avoid the disaster drives that have 2-3 in a row. Those are killer when they go from the opponent's 35 to their own 40 and have to punt.

My thoughts exactly one team will win and one team will lose, close the thread!

Too bad it isn't that simple!

Shelby should win, without a doubt. Maybe more than 10, but gotta consider the rivalry factor might make it closer.

Someone said Crest can't give up 2-3 play drives for TDs. I agree. If Crest wins, their defense will have to play solid and make Lions work for their scores.

Shelby is going to score between 20-30 points IMO. Crest is going to need at least 3 TDs to have a chance unless the defense can hold them in the teens.

I think this game will be closer than many are predicting. I believe Crest hangs in and keeps it close. Shelby 20- Crest 14.
