No I am not new to these boards, in fact I used to post on these board all the time.. Took a break from posting for a few years, but have kept us with all you crazy, get way too serious over high school games, people. Thought it would be a fun time to come back.. First up, Cleveland County Teams..

Shelby.. Obviously the class of Cleveland County, right? Can we all agree on that? They've already destroyed Kings Mountain.. Have Burns coming up, at Burns, in two weeks in what many people are greatly looking forward too.. Burns fans think they have something for Shelby, Shelby fans are being humble, and basically just letting the Burns fans think as they want, all while knowing what the Golden Lions are capable of in two weeks.. Shelby goes through the regular season, and postseason untouched, maybe even untested, winning yet another State Championship.

Burns.. Oh Burns.. Who in their right mind, other than a few moonshine meth heads up in Upper Cleveland County would have thought Burns would be at 7-0 going into their bye week? I'll wait (have a feeling it'll be a long wait)............ Ok we're back... Burns has looked good so far, although beating a private school playing only 20 kids, with some eighth graders, Hunter Huss (although they did just beat South Point), Chase and East Rutherford aren't going to turn too many heads.. Burns does have good wins over rival Kings Mountain and Central Cabarrus (who just beat Concord tonight).. Burns if definitely improved, but honestly, bottom line, they will not be able to stay with Shelby in two weeks... Anyone that thinks otherwise is delirious. Burns comes back down to earth October 14th.

Crest.. Oh the fun I could have with this Crest bunch.. Losing to what we now know is a bad (at best) South Point team in the first game of the year, then really struggling with perennial bottom feeders RS Central and Draughn, although getting at least one good win over a tough TC Roberson team getting them to 5-1. Anyone can see through, Crest clearly has some major issues.. Crest and Burns will probably be a really good game honestly as they are pretty much on the same level this year, will be interesting game.. However much like Burns, anyone that thinks Crest has any chance against Shelby is just not thinking clearly, I don't care about the rivalry thing.. We will learn a lot about Crest next week against Kings Mountain.

Finally Kings Mountain.. Injuries seem to alway kill what could be really good seasons for the Mounties, and the same story goes again this season.. Kings Mountain was thought the be a contender in 3A this season, now they are staring at going 0-3 in Cleveland County, and having to travel in the 1st round of the playoffs, to play a far superior team, only to have a very long, season ending, bus ride home.. For most of the last 15 years, Kings Mountain has just simply been the redheaded stepchild of Cleveland County (2014-15 when Burns briefly assumed that role) and I just don't see KM getting out of this spot anytime soon...

Basically, the county shapes up this way...

Shelby - 100% the class of Cleveland County, and maybe even the class of the 2A division in NC

Burns - Legitimate shot to be # 2 in the county when all is said and done, with the possibility to host at least one home playoff game, possibly two, depending on the Crest game. But from 3-8 last year to a most likely 9-2 or 10-1 season, Burns fans have to be standing on their heads in excitement.

Crest just seems to be regressing, and I'm not sure they have the right people in the right places to fix the issues.. Hell even most of the Crest fan base feels the same way.. Crest's only saving grace? They are young, with the right coaching, they can get back to being Crest..

Kings Mountain.. Not much to say about the Mounties.. You'll continue to be the doormat, redheaded stepchild to the other three...

Have fun all

I would say this is a fairly accurate assessment. No arguments here. I think us beating Shelby is a longshot at best. I'd love to keep it respectable but they're playing a different game than anyone else. I was glad to see Central Cabarrus beat Concord tonight and Huss beat SP. That makes our SOS look a little better.

Shelby has a very good team this year with the defense leading the way.But we are beginning to take a hit on the offensive line with injuries and a couple key defensive players. Also with the loss of 14 our running game has become very limited. The way I see it making back to the state championship with 2A football so good it will be very very tough.

Most Burns posters on here are fairly humble, aside from taking shots at the ponies struggling at 5-1. I am definitely in the category of not expecting such a turn around. I knew the coaches and kids would right the ship, but not this fast. We have a lot of work to do and huge uphill battle with shelby. I'm just excited that these games mean something again.

I am not trying to start a war or anything but you don't have a shot unless Shelby turns it over 3 or 4 times and even then you have to play over your heads and your best night ever to have a shot!

Wow.....I didn't know it was such a big secret that Shelby is the class of Cleveland County:rolleyes:
At this time Burns is a solid #2 KM at 3 and Crest last. At Crest we are just hoping to get healthy, improve a little each week and hope all those sophomores learn with experience as the year moves along. I would have to say we're underdogs to all the other CC teams this year. But there is hope to be a much better team at the end of the year. And the future looks promising with 10-12 sophomores playing or starting each week.
Good luck to all

Nah man I really believe Crest is the fourth best team in the county based on how we've played so far this season. I do believe we could improve week by week and finish out the year at 9-2..... But it's not likely. Just calling it the way I see it. We're not the Crest of the past several years, but once again IF we get healthy and better week by week we could possibly beat KM and Burns. I do think we beat EB and East, but not Shelby. The future looks bright and fast with all the young players.

We know its gonna be a dogfight on 10/28, no question about it. Shelby presents us with a huge challenge but the 3a games are much more important. As yall do we got some guys banged up thst may be held out this week. Km didnt fare too well in their last rain game vs . Forestview but it could hurt your passing game that seems to be coming together with the young qb.

U didnt exactly step out on a limb there bud. I think folks were surprised at how well we moved the ball just could not convert to points. They will be so far ahead of any 2a its just unreal .

I didn't but when I posted that you ask if I had seen either team play implying that I had no facts to base my prediction on, we'll you was right I didn't but I just knew!

I wouldnt worry to much they would do worse to most teams in the state and you don't have to beat them to win a state championship!

I still haven't seen Shelby play and I can tell you now they can get as many as they want when they play crest it's not going to be fun!

Just trying to get some interesting, and halfway intelligent conversations going lol.. I was here a few years ago for a long time when NCPreps was the place to be during high school football season... Just doesn't seem to have the same feel anymore, not as many people here, or if they are, they aren't talking like they used to..

I wanted to see how Shelbys D would do against a balanced attack. What we found out is close to 300 yrds of offense from Burns. A couple of things that Shelby hasn't faced all year was a QB that could run and throw and a solid RB. Up until this game Shelby has faced either one dimensional teams or just bad teams where Shelby's athletes covered up any mistakes. I think some got fooled into believing this Shelby D was like Crest from a few years ago but I think Friday showed their not as dominant as that group was, but yet still very solid.

That Crest defense was a once every 25 year type of defense you get in high school football, if that often.. That group was special

Burns was simply a good team. I am not that concerned, though. I don't think we will see 2A teams w/ Burns' physicality. There will be teams as athletic, but certainly not as physical, in my opinion. Like someone mentioned earlier, there are some sore kids from both teams who took it easy today, well yesterday.

Good post hitman and i agree. You guys are very solid on defense. It was a good test for our offense as well. I was pleased we could move the ball as well as we could just could not get the next 20 yards to score. Our line gave cam huge protection in the first half but it broke down alot in the second . Maybe yall changed something or they just got tired . The biggest breakdown came when dax slamed 18 and was never touched but their were not many of those types of plays.

Interesting the comments on the Shelby defense....a team that was averaging 32 points per game was held to 7. The 7 came on a 40+ yard run in which the defense thought the runner was down. Take that play away and Burns could have stalled on that drive and been shut out completely. 300 yards means nothing when you can't get points out of it. I think our defense played stellar against a great offense. Burns' QB is a playmaker and so shifty. 32 ppg is nearly 5 tds a game. After what I saw Friday night, I look to Burns going deep in the 3A playoffs. They have great a great OL and DL that will give most teams fits. Shelby defense has given up 76 points through 9 games which is an average of 8 points per game. If you take out the 4th quarter garbage time points (43 pts) out, Shelby's first team defense has given up around 33 points though 9 games....or an average of 3.6 points per game. Stellar!

You can look at it that way or you can look at it like Burns had some points they missed out on as well. The dropped pass that he had for a second, the illegal forward pass that called one back. I thought it was close, Id like to see a replay of that, We drove but could not cash in. Bend but dont break for the shelby D. I did see a still shot of the incomplete pass they called for Epps and he was a FULL YARD in bounds. That sideline ref on our side was an fn joke. I think he missed a few catches for Both Burns and Shelby. Epps however was an AWFUL call. Our run game was effective when Barbee kept it and kept the shelby D honest, that opened it up for Hill some. Our short passing game was there but like stalled when we got to deep in shelby territory. I think Shelby's run D is their bread n butter.

Well and hopper dropped a td that literally hit him in the numbers....danta jones dropped one that he may have scored on and the epps drop . I give credit to shelby d as those kids always make those plays maybe in our head some. Barbee was NOT across the line . Watch the reply rev . That was just a horrible call .......i agree 72 we have to potential to make a run based on the small 3 a west . Hibriten was in a close one as was pisgah....we just need a complete game ....we didnt look good vs east and after the loss friday draughn may be the best medicine. But we wont overlook anyone .

I have heard about Shelby's defense for the past three or four years...but what impressed me Friday night was their QB and receivers. QB has an arm and he is accurate with it. The receivers are track stars playing football in terms of speed...but dang, they can catch it, too. I thought Burns moved the ball pretty well against Shelby's defense. Their ability to swarm the ball is impressive. Shelby has play makers at every skill position. Anytime they touch the ball, they have the ability to take it to the house. A 35-7 loss is not usually a game that you can take positive things away from. But, Burns did score and missed some other opportunities to put points on the board. Devine knows his stuff and we are thrilled that he is back home.

I was really impressed with Burns on Friday night. They moved the chains better than any team has besides A.C. Reynolds. Both Burns and ACR were the most successful getting yardage when the QB pulled the ball and kept it himself. No doubt Coach Devine knew Shelby's D would be aggressive and had a lot of "read" plays and mis-directions plays, as well as a short passing game to get the ball off quickly. The strategy worked between the 30s, but Shelby was able to get stops just outside the red zone.

Looking back at the stats, Burns ran 74 plays to 46 for Shelby, including 42 to 12 in the first half. Burns was able to keep the Shelby O off the field for much of the first half, but the problem was that Burns gave up the "big plays" from Shelby - 12 plays in the first half, but hit plays of 37, 79, and 80 yards. On the flip side, Burns was only able to come up with one big play on offense, the 46-yard TD run by Hill, which was a highlight-reel TD.

Burns had 288 total yards on 74 plays (3.89 yards per play).
12-31 passing (39%)
5-14 on 3rd down (36%)
1-4 on 4th down (25%)
0-1 in red zone (20 yard line and in)

Shelby had 445 yards on 46 plays (9.67 yards per play)
12-20 passing (60%)
2-6 on 3rd down (33%)
0-0 on 4th down
3-4 in red zone (All TDs)
9 QB sacks
17 tackles for loss (includes sacks)

Both teams left points on the table...Burns dropped a slant near the 3-yard line and Shelby dropped a perfectly thrown ball that would've been a long TD pass, as well.

Shelby also fumbled inside the Burns 5, only to have Burns fumble it right back on the next play (which happened twice during the game).

Shelby also threw an INT in the end zone and Burns had a TD pass get called back for the QB being across the line of scrimmage when he threw the pass.

A couple of head-scratchers or "what ifs":
Shelby throws INT in the end zone and the officials blow it dead and do not allow Burns to return the pick?
At least 3 sideline catches called incomplete for feet coming down out-of-bounds (in defense of refs, they were all close and hard to tell)
Burns punt that Shelby return man almost touched (some think he touched the ball) - I have not seem game film to see if he did or did not...but Shelby retained the ball.

All in all, a very good high school game between two very good teams. I was pleasantly surprised by Burns' play and happy to see the Golden Lions come away with a hard-fought "W".
