South point vs Lincolnton

Lincolnton scores on the first play from scrimmage with an 80 yard rushing TD. SP shutdown on first series. Lincolnton with the ball throwing 3 yard passes and in SP 30.
Lincolnton goes to the one yard line on fourth and six with a dink pass and 6 missed tackles. Illegal procedure on second down. Lincolnton makes the field goal and its 10-0 after one quarter.
Congratulations Lincolnton on the win. Y'all were the better team tonight.
Wolves were howling tonight. Deserved to win. That said, think SP will learn a lot from this game. Poor tackling and unusual lack of discipline on offense were our part of the loss equation. SP MUST import defensive speed to offense in order to give the offense a chance for big plays. Lack of offensive speed to create big plays cost us dearly in this game. Team has it...confident our coaches will get it right before its too late! Go Big Red!
Talked to SP coaches after the game. They were VERY concerned that the team was not ready to play after beating Crest...NO EXCUSE even though they held them after practice multiple days this week to try and refocus them. Wolves are a GREAT team who spreads it out and causes problems on offense. We only have 9 or 10 Seniors on our team. Look to them to give the Red Raiders more focus after this loss...they didn't enjoy it!!!
Was flipping around on KTC and watched the overtime. But one of the plays I did see earlier in the game was pretty good. Actually, it was a great play. Lee avoided a sack (Sarrat) and threw a pass to Muse who made a nice catch for a TD. Couldn't believe I was watching SP.
But late in the game, trying to score before regulation, it was fullback up the middle, over and over again.

South Point should have won this game 20-17 in regulation time. With 39 seconds left on third down from the 15 yard line Mickey decides to throw one in the endzone. A 32 yard field goal ends the game and secures the victory. South Poimt throws like 4 or less times a game, quarterback is no pocket passer, and they have run like 7,462,974 fullback dives in the game. Why not run one more play and let the kicker make the game winner and go home with the win?
Some have said it was a sloppy game others say that SP wasn't focused after the "BIG" Crest win(blah blah blah)....yet our kids were never given a chance coming into this game by most....like I said before ..its two great traditional teams at battle early in the season to gain a sense of momentum for the rest of the season. Call it what you will from here on...we respect the Red Raiders.....but they also have to respect us... THE WOLVES...from gut checks...to heart...to just plain ole athleticism.... Even in the midst of questionable plays calls....THIS IS WHY YOU PLAY THE GAME!!
Lincolnton is a very good team and got much better when the Surratt kid left EL to play for the Wolves. SP played poorly and has some things to fix. The long 91 yd TD run came after SP had him wrapped up at LOS. The Raider D quit before he was pulled down, but the Ltown RB did not quit. Wolves jammed the box all night. When facing packed boxes, SP has always had FB's who could break one tackle and suddenly find themselves behind the secondary. We are not seeing that this year and it has to happen if FB is going to see the ball 25-30 times a game. Finally, if the Raiders had a bad night, it was an even worse performance from the officials. Very flag happy group and had major impacts on the game. Several extremely questionable calls that came at critical times. SP had to have seen 100+ yards including two on the last drive in that likely would have ended the game in regulation. Good luck to the Wolves. They are a very good team and will make noise in 2A this year. If SP plays the same game this coming Thursday night, Shelby will have a field day.

IF does not apply to that statement, Shelby will chap that azz this Thursday on statewide TV. This Shelby team is complete. A much better defense than last year and another high scoring offense. All dollars will be on Shelby over. South Point.

Y'all said the last time we went to shelby and played and the Big Red came out with a big win and it could happen this time but we have to play better then we did last night.
Thanks....I really try to be tactful on here when I engage in some of these post because I know a lot of our players, coaches, and parents read the threads....
Lincolnton has a good team too but we gave that game away. When you make mistakes against a good team you will lose.
I wouldn't say SP gave the game away. Both teams made some mistakes. Lincolnton threw an interception on a first and goal when it was 17-17. Also overthrew an open receiver on a 4th down inside the 20 on an earlier drive. Plenty of blown opportunities on both sides. It was sloppy but the defenses had a lot to do with that. Littlejohn had a rough night, largely due to SP's pressure, but he stepped up and made two huge plays in OT to win it. And McClain's legs were huge but weren't used quite enough. Good luck to SP the rest of the way, and way to go Wolves.

2A west looked really strong this week, or maybe 3A west is just down...too early to tell but the list of W's by the former is telling.
Lincolnton, Heritage Newton, Shelby all had wins over 'quality' opponents. Still too early to tell, but when is the last time 'top' 2A teams had a sweep over 'top' 3A teams in a season...is 3A west weak this season or just starting slow?

I also think clock management was a big issue with 4 minutes left in regulation. Questionable play calling and poor time out management killed any real chances for SP to drive to the end zone or have a respectable chance at a makeable field goal. It just looked like SP was playing more for the tie than the win in those critical 4 minutes.
Not to take anything away from Lincolnton. They played hard and earned the win. This early in the season they just wanted it more. Hopefully SP will look at things differently in future games.

3a West is weaker this year by a good amount. Crest and ACR are not nearly as good as previous years. And I'm assuming SP too.
Well stated. Yeah, there were a lot of mistakes. In addition to the mistakes mentioned there was another early mistake by the Wolves (illegal procedure) on 2nd and goal at the one cost them a touchdown and they end up having to settle for a FG. Also, some bad luck for Lincolnton on the short SP punt that hit a Lincolnton lineman going down field in the top of the head and ending up being a TO giving SP possession in Lincolnton territory.
Going into the game I thought Lincolnton had a chance to win IF they didn't make a lot of mistakes. Cudos to the team for finding a way to win despite making a lot of mistakes.
