Not necessarly the star but the character that or the most part carried the show or the show would not have been the same or lasted as long without them.

that’s probably the best one. Went from part time character to lead
Al Swearengen. Tony Soprano. Walter White.

I'll submit Urkel from Family Matters.
Al and Wilson on home improvement
Lou Ferrigno king of queens

If Homer Simpson is too much of a main character, then Chief Wiggum.
Yeah it pretty much got to the point where most people started referring to the show as Urkel instead of Family Matters. I still refer to it as Urkel.
Chloe on 24,startes as a minor character, but became second to Jack as series progressed
Probably not so iconic due to it not being as popular or well known as a lot of shows. But I am really into Ruthie from The Ozarks.

Christopher Lloyd (Reverend Jim) on Taxi. I liked him better than Andy Kaufman's character on Taxi but he would qualify too.
Newman on Seinfeld.
Billy Gibbons on Bones. He had more of a recurring cameo but hilarious!

No and Luke Duke. When they left the show and were replaced by their cousins Coy and Vance Duke the show wasn’t nearly as good.
They hired the real Dukes back quick when ratings went in the toilet. I seem to recall they wanted a raise.
How is there no George Costanza mentioned???????
CANNOT mention Bo and Luke without mentioning Daisy.
Sheldon Cooper
How about Cliff Huxtable? Still iconic?
True but she didn’t leave the show for a little while like Bo and Luke did, that’s the only reason that I didn’t mention
