in this morning's Raleigh News and Observer, sports writer Joe Giglio has the Blue Devils in third place in his ACC basketball conference standings predictions. He has UNC at number 1, followed by UVA at numer 2. The prediction, by the way, was writtten after Duke dismantled #2, Kentucky.

This prediction is hard to fathom since the national polls had Duke at number 4 in the country prior to the Kentucky game. What gives?

The only team that has a legitimate shot at the ACC title are UVA and Duke. Roy isn’t used to having to count on OAD Freshman as two key guys on his team at PG and SF with White and Little. Also, with Zion showing he can play really good defense, he can shutdown Maye either inside with his size or outside with his quickness and length.

Going into the season, I was worried about perimeter shooting, defense, sharing the ball (selfishness) and post defense/rebounding.
.
And those were legit concerns.
.
After 3 games, perimeter shooting and defense look fine. Given our talent, that is enough.

"We've been pretty confident Duke was going to win the conference 4 of the past 5 years and we were wrong every time. We haven't won the regular season since 82-50. There's a decent chance we don't win it again this year. Let's slow down the hype train just a bit...there will be bumps in the road"

Hmmm... Looking at this year's team, one which, by the way has a true point guard, and surveying the talent and experience that resides at UNC and UVA, do you believe that Duke is the third best team in the ACC?

You know I read "GAG"lio's column on this couple days ago, and I was initially angered, per kneejerk reaction. However w/the veterans those teams return (along w/Syracuse IMO) I can see his point.

As @1156jack posted, his column was Tuesday, PRIOR to Duke's shellacking of the 'Cats. There are going to be bumps in the road, and you could probably draw 3-4 teams I mentioned out of a hat and they could finish in that 1-2-3 order. However Mr. "GAG"lio is probably doing a little 2nd guessing after Duke's national eye opening performance Tuesday nite. In a way I like his pick because it gives us even more motivation!!!

Funny sidebar to all this is Andy Katz released an ELITE EIGHT forecast Tuesday as well, and didnt even list our Devils....The irony? Katz picked slimeball Calipari's boys to cut down the nets! Hope Andy enjoyed interviewing our boys in the locker room after the Tuesday nite massacre!

Just remember, last season UNC had 10 losses heading into the NCAA tournament and was awarded the #2 seed in arguably the easiest bracket in the entire tournament. If they lose 15 games this season, they'll be in the hunt for the overall #1 seed.

Jurkin its called "The Swofford Effect." We need to get his butt outta there. I am convinced if he didnt have that ACC Commish bully pulpit, UNC would have suffered sanctions for two decades of organized cheating for athletes!

I think Duke is easily the best team in the ACC and that they will probably win the regular season. But its certainly no given. The hype since Tuesday is out of control and we really have no idea what to expect from this team through the grind of the conference schedule. That said, I've bought into the hype myself, and I am going to enjoy every minute of it.

I could see us getting 2nd place maybe somehow, but that certainly isn't a wise bet if you're putting money on it.

I'm reasonably certain Joe wrote this before the UK game.

The News and Observer, the Durham Morning-Herald and the Charlotte Observer are all McClatchy papers and lots of the columns/articles show up in all three papers.

Joe is not generally inclined to overly-favorable to Duke. But he does have a point. Duke keeps getting picked no. 1 in the preseason but not finishing no. 1 once the games start. It does take some time for a team starting four freshmen to gel and the ACC is filled with lots of roadblocks to trip up a young team.

I suspect no one at Duke much cares one way or the other.
