Haha well if you had played even slightly decent D we probably could have stayed in man and we might of won a championship.
Is it just me or did a few of these guys leave Duke not loving the experience? Maybe I’m just reading into it too much.
I'm not going to say they did or didn't enjoy their time at Duke, but I think it's fair to say they all aren't used to any criticism about their game. Sometimes I think they are only seeing one side of the exposure, which is really good. But along with that exposure from being on tv every game, is being nitpicked afterwards by every talking head. Got to take the good with the bad.
It didn't help him any when Dakich ripped him, and a few other analysts said Duke was a final four team without him. Point being, the talking heads saw a different team without him, and a few of them gave their opinions on national tv, and they weren't in his favor, even though they would all admit how talented he is.
Personally, I think he has a chance to be really good as a pro. But he has been exposed. You can thank Duke for that.
I would say the only player that should have a legitimate gripe with their usage last year was Duval. Put him in a situation like Sexton or Young had with their high usage rates, and I have no doubt that he's a borderline lottery pick. Really unfortunate that he seems to have fell out of the first round. Last year's roster was worst case scenario for a player like him. His strengths weren't able to be utilized and his weaknesses were glaring. However, I think his game is much more suited for the NBA and I think he'll have a long NBA career even if he doesn't improve his jumper dramatically.
I think Duke helped Duval get better at all the things he sucked at coming out of high school: spot up shooting, running a half court offense, and patience on D. The downside of that experience is that a national audience saw him work through those weaknesses. To his credit though, by tourney time Duval was playing much better overall. In our final game and loss to Kansas he played great. The choice to go to Duke over a school like Oklahoma or Alabama may have been a risk to his draft stock, but I'd argue it made him a better player and person. The system which these blue chips have to navigate is flawed and encourages a "me first" attitude. I applaud Tre for putting Duke first for much of the year. I don't criticize him for tweeting a dunk highlight after that one loss. The kid was trying to get noticed and claim some of those millions that are on the table. On the court he showed he cared about winning, and that's what counts. I love all our guys from last year.
The countless Bagley articles are getting annoying, they have ranged from he's gonna be a hall-of-famer to he's gonna be a bust.
Everything I've read he's gonna go #2 to the Kings, great for him, he wants to go as high as possible, whereas others seem like they are actively avoiding the Kings. I'd rather him avoid that disaster of a franchise, but oh well. I think he will be a many year all-star regardless where he lands.
Duval though??? I'll rarely say it's best for a guy to return to school instead of immediately making money, but I think he could blow up into a lottery pick given another season. And yes, I'm aware Duval doesn't come from a great financial situation, may need the immediate family money, but still.........

100% agreed. I absolutely loved having Duval here. He is part of the reason why I think it's absolutely ridiculous that some posters say the OAD's don't care about the name in front of the jersey. Look at the emotion from Duval during some of the biggest games last season. He wanted it more than anyone. From my understanding, a big reason he chose Duke was that it was a great place to work on some of his weaknesses. His draft stock was undoubtedly hurt during his lone season here, but hopefully last year's experience will put him in a better position to make up some of that lost money during his second contract.
6’3 guards who can’t shoot outside of 3 feet don’t tend to last long in the NBA so he better get tons better at it.
That's true for a lot of 6'3 guards that don't have as much as Duval has, but he's 6'3 with a 6'9 wingspan, 41.5 inch, good defender, and just a FREAK athlete in general. Even if he can't shoot, he still has a lot of different ways he can impact a game. I don't think it could be understated how much his athleticism will help him moving forward. A team will give him a second contract even if his shooting doesn't improve immediately with the hope that he pulls it all together. He's the entire package except for shooting.
Great rebuttal! I certainly hope you are correct! He has all the goods except (maybe) the most important one for a 6’3 player.
