Pick Your Duke All-O&D Team

if you had to make a 5 man team with all of our recent One & Done players, what would the squad be.. This is based off of their prime ability while they were at Duke (not based on their current NBA ability and/or potential)..

The only rule is you have to pick a realistic lineup.. meaning you can’t have more than 3 guards or more than 3 forwards in your lineup, and you need at least 1 player that can run the point and at least 1 big post man..

Here are the players/positions to pick from:

Point Guard - Kyrie Irving
Point Guard - Tyus Jones
Point Guard - Trevon Duval
Combo Guard - Austin Rivers
Combo Guard - Frank Jackson
Shooting Guard - Gary Trent, Jr.
Guard / Forward - Brandon Ingram
Guard / Forward - Jayson Tatum
Forward - Jabari Parker
Forward - Justise Winslow
Forward - Marvin Bagley III
Center/Forward - Harry Giles
Center/Forward - Wendell Carter, Jr.
Center - Jahlil Okafor

I’m going with:

PG - Kyrie Irving
SG - Jayson Tatum
SF - Justise Winslow
PF - Marvin Bagley
C - Wendell Carter

All 5 can hit the 3 and all 5 can finish at the rim.. None of them are really a complete liability at anything.

Might start Carter over Bagley for the superior defense. Same with Tatum & Parker

Jahlil as my primary big man

If I can pick based off what we know now, and not as they were at Duke, then I probably go....

Kyrie & Austin
Still Jayson and Brandon
Marvin and/or Wendell
Tyus is my primary backup guard
Jabari for his versatility
Marvin and/or Wendell

2. Kyrie - just ridiculous. Not more to say about him
3. Jabari - Just a stud. Scoring machine and pure stud
4. Justise - Defensive anchor and ultimate glue guy
5. Okafor - A beast in the post that couldn’t be stopped

The Devils Illustrated OAD Hated for No Reason Team

1. Trevon Duval. The dude can't throw an entry pass and can't shoot.
2. Austin Rivers. Not a team player, only wants to score.
3. Gary Trent JR. Put in O'Connell, he is better.
4. Jayson Tatum. The Captain. Very selfish and can't make a lay-up.
5. Marvin Bagley III. Duke is a better basketball team without him. Terrible at defense.

You're accurate on a few of them more than you realize. I'll say this about Duval, the kid got screwed with this team. He would have had a much better year without Bagley, and Trent wasn't good enough to play 37 minutes. O'Connell would have benefited getting a few of his.

I don't hate any of them, and I think Bagley is going to be a great pro player, but several Duke guys suffered due to Bagley. Duval could never be the guy K recruited once we won the Bagley sweepstakes, but he gave it his all. He would have averaged at least 4-5 more points and a few more assists had he had room to maneuver. I'm not sorry that I'm not as giddy over what one guy could do when I think it was done at others expense.

Are we gonna go through this again? I could also choose to discuss how we win the National Championship if Grayson Allen shot the three at an average clip, but I'm not gonna do that. Swap Grayson's minutes with O'Connell in the Kansas game and we probably win.

I think maybe I should give Bagley the Captain's honor over Tatum, and man I thought Tatum had team captain on lock.

You brought it up with your sarcastic starting five.
We just see Duke ball differently. I like more of a team concept, whereas you drool over how good you think an individual will do once a pro.

Actually, I drool over titles. And the fact that we have had 3 classes feature more than 1 OAD player, and 1 of those classes won a title, I'll take a 33.33% National Title success rate every day of the week. What's funny is of the past 4 years, our weakest team was the 2016 team, aka the only team that DIDN"T feature multiple OAD's, but hey who is counting.

Here's what you don't understand...we have a golden key with the way we are currently dominating recruiting. It's not that we are getting OAD players, but we are consistently getting the ELITE OAD players. No other school, not even currently UK, has the key that we have, we land whoever we want. And yes, if the 5 best prospects all want to play at Duke, we have to take that deal.

Now if we are currently recruiting like UK is, than I'd be upset. They are bringing in 3-5 OAD players a year, but lately none of those guys are the ELITE OAD's that Duke is getting. Yes, what Cal is currently doing is a recipe for disaster and I'd be against that. We need our OAD's to be the elite ones. UK had their time from 2010-2014 of getting all of the ELITE OAD's, they got a title out of it, should have had another, thank god Cal can't coach.

I hope we ride this current wave as long as possible. Now if we bring in a class of 5 Frank Jackson's who all dip out to be 2nd rounders, then I'll be concerned.

Agreed! And if they're good enough for K, then who am I to question a guy that has won 1,100 games? I laugh at some fans who get angry at the players brought into Duke, but never place the blame on the guy that allowed them to come to Duke...Coach K.

I didn’t add them because of the changes in the game since they played.. they played with a shorter 3pt line and the most elite players went straight to the pros out of high school.

It’s so played out for Duke fans to tell other Duke fans how to act. Just a sarcastic post that truly wasn’t necessary and wasn’t even funny since it is so played out. I don’t consider JWill at all to be the “model” Duke fan or some superior basketball mind. The problem is, is that it’s pretty obvious that JWill considers himself to be the “model” Duke fan or some superior basketball mind.
