With Capel taking the immense challenge at Pitt, who do you think will be the next Assistant? Will it be another from the Brotherhood?

Seth Greenburg says K should hire JWill.

I say bring Laettner home...We need the fire and mean streak.

Other possibles? Tyler Thornton? Paulus?

Does Jon become the top assistant? J-will would be a great hire but he has the perfect job. Christian would be awesome as well, that'd be a big change. Paulus has no shot and it'll prob just be bring Thornton in to take Nolans spot which I don't like really

My dream scenario is Redick retires from the NBA, comes in as head assistant for at least 1 year under K, then takes over for K. I'm telling you guys that JJ would own college basketball as a coach. I'm just not convinced yet that he would want that type of job. He has the personality and mind.

I think he should come from this board. We have several candidates that if the Duke coaches had made the decisions they suggested on this board we would have a few more natty's and lot's more wins. I think whoever feels they would make an excellent asst. which could lead to the next head coach of Duke to please apply immediately. Also a move like this could be good for the rest of the board as he could get us plenty of tickets in prime seats. :D OFC

This just gave me an idea for a thread.

I can definitely think of two in particular who “think” they could step right in.

Damn the timing of this. I retire next June. I'd do it for the courtside seats and a bagel.

I love the idea of J-Will as an assistant coach . It would be a home run hire for recruiting and point guard development. And add Christian as well.

He knew how to play defense. There is no guarantee he knows the first thing about coaching it.

Jon never coached. Nolan played in the NBA, he didnt know how to coach... so what's your point... Tyler Thornton is the only other play that has done anything coaching wise, but we dont need another guard style coach...

So Nolan playing in the NBA means that he doesn’t know how to coach? That’s one of the dumbest things that I’ve ever heard. Most coaches are people that played the sport that they coach.

Replying to a comment that Shelden Knew how to play defense, not that he knows how to coach defense... I'm saying our defense has been bad for 3+ years, bring in a candidate with some defensive knowledge... and what I'm saying is Nolan had ZERO coaching experience and was given a job. He played in the league. Same as William's. So I'm saying give he a position to help improve the defense side of the ball, and work with the big men...

Both Jon and Nolan started as special assistants after their pro playing careers ended. Jon was back in Durham just 3 years after he graduated, and Nolan spent extra time here during the NBA lockout his rookie year before coming back for good after 5 years.

I don't see someone who has already made a name for himself beyond Duke coming back to take the special assistant's position, and I don't see anyone who has been away from the program that long jumping right into the vacant assistant coach's spot, Capel's return in 2011 notwithstanding.

Since '97, every Duke assistant has been a former Duke guard.

It will be a former player, no doubt. I really like the Shelden Williams idea.

Not sure if Battier would want to be anything but Associate HC.

The Jwill idea may have been one of the least stupid things Seth Greenberg has ever said.

There isn't the slightest thing about Shelden's demeanor that makes me think he'd be a natural for coaching.

We haven't had a non-guard assistant since, what? Bilas in '92?
