Hurley or Capel?

Who would you like to see take the spot when the GOAT finally retires?

I really think Hurley would keep us going, the guy coaches with so much energy and his players seem to genuinely love playing for him.

Capel.
He’s already here and he’s been amazing in recruiting. He shouldn’t be stepped over by anybody

If Hurley has built a strong program 3-5 years from now, it will be tough not to pass on him

Yes but at the same time Hurley might not want to leave his program and the way he built it his way instead of trying to fill K’s shoes.
Capel would be my pic as coach in waiting.

Hurley or Collins. Give both of them a program like Duke and they will likely recruit well also.

I can't understand why we haven't discussed Coach K's replacement before now. Both Hurley and Capel are great choices but I would like to throw in some names that perhaps are over looked. How about Collins, Wojo, Amaker, Dawkins, Brad Stevens, Mike Brey, Scheyer, Battier, Grant Hill, Laettner, and Jay Bilas just to throw out some names. OFC

It's Capel. He's been groomed to be Coach K's successor, he's put the time in and deserves the opportunity. We all know how he's killed it on the recruiting trail. I think he will do a great job.

It should and I feel it will be Capel. The man has done an excellent job as not only an assistant, but what he has done on the recruiting trail can't be understated. Him and John have been killing it. Just go back to what many of our recent top picks have said about Capel.
Yes Hurley is doing a great job in the first dozen of games, but let's see how he does the rest of the year, or the next few years with recruiting as well. As fast as everybody is pumping him up right now, he could easily go back into the unknown until he have a good showing against Ky like he did with Buffalo. None of these kids today are connected with Hurley in no way. Have to goggle him to see who he was.
With Capel, he has been associated with Duke for awhile, face been on national tv, seen on National Championship teams, and maybe the most important thing, as Rj Barrett stated, Capel is one of the reasons he chose Duke because how he relates to today's high school recruits. Not to mention how positive he is seen as a great guy by other recruits from the texting to the music game, and just how he relates. I would rather eat first on the recruiting trail and give him the first opportunity.
Plus being under the GOAT for all the years, I'm sure he has learned a few things from K.

That works for me too
Do you guys really expect Capel to do what he has at duke under the GOAT, then remain the assistant coach under Collins, Hurley, or any other former Duke player that's a coach right now? I'm sure he would feel pretty disrespected and move on to another coaching opportunity somewhere else. I'm sure when he had the chance to leave, he didn't because of a good reason, and I'm not convinced it's to stay as the assistant or as many say ( the recruiter) for any other coach other than Coach K.

I've got a feeling Collins might turn out to be special. What he's done thus far is pretty amazing. It's too soon to crown Hurley, though he's been good this year. Sustainability is key.

I agree ticket, he may just as well as he may not. I will never knock a duke guy, but I just believe if you put in your time at one place for a long time, haven't brought any discredit to the organization, second in command, been praised by the best, then you should have the first opportunity when your boss retires.

I always want to see Hurley doing it simply because he is my favorite Blue Devil of all time. However, given the time and dedication that Capel has given to the program, he deserves it an I'd like to see what he can do as a full time head coach. I would rather see him in the job at this point.

I think Capel gets it. He's been amazing as far as recruiting. His coaching run while K was out didn't go so well, but it was also pretty impromptu.

not saying I expect it to happen,it's highly unlikely, saying that's what I'd personally like to see

Being a great recruiter doesn’t always translate into being a great
coach......see uk.
However, bringing in the top players can make you look good as a coach just on sheer talent alone.

Yeah, I don't think it was all that bad given the circumstances. He did play more bodies than K would of at GT, then had the great game at Wake Forest. We all know Duke gets everybody's best shot every night on the floor. Even with the GOAT, and all his years and experience, we have lost tournament games that just make you shake your head. I just look at Duke as being the big dog on the porch, and in order to control him, you had to have owned a big dog before. If you haven't, then the power he posses may be too much for you lol.

That's true, nor does being a great coach at a school other than the true powerhouses mean you can do at the next level where every game is on national tv where every thing you do is magnified good or bad.

The bottom line, we can all agree to disagree, but I think we all are uniform when I say we don't want to skip a beat the sad day the best that ever done it walks away. I think all of Dukes haters are just waiting to see us fall off the map. I expect a little slippage, but just pray we stay relevant. That's why for me, it's going to be a sad day when K walks away. I'm just going to enjoy the time we still have with him and worry about the next coach when we come to that crossroad.

I actually think Capel get the gig. He coaches for 5 years and then Hurley comes on board.

It’s probably unrealistic, but that’s what I could see happening.

I can't imagine Duke and Coach K will not reward Capel for his body of work with Duke with the head position. The only way that doesn't happen is if Coach K tells Capel it's not going to be him and Capel leaves in the meantime.

I'd love for Scheyer to get a job somewhere. I see him as a great coach some day and hopefully at Duke eventually. I mean he even looks like Brad Stevens!

Whoever the next coach is going to have a tough row to hoe.Regardless of what he does he will have to deal with what would have K done in that situation.Replacing the GOAT is not a recipe for for success

If our post-K success translates to Calipari's success at UK, I will absolutely take it. It is exceedingly rare for a successor to a Hall of Fame coach to have immediate (or any) success.

I love Capel and Hurley both and would be happy with either one. Capel is an outstanding recruiter but I do worry a little about how things turned out at Oklahoma, not that it would be the same way at Duke. My top choice would be Brad Stevens but now I do not ever see that happening so, I am going with Hurley.
