Your All Under-appreciated Duke Team

Daniel Ewing and Chris Carrawell. Chris might have been the most underrated player of the K era. God he was good. Antonio Lang. William Avery- i think he gets crapped on by this fan base and doesn’t get nearly the credit he deserves bc he left earlier than he should have. And we will round it out with my guy, Shelden Williams. For a guy that got his number retired and holds the duke record for boards and blocks, he never gets any love.

Paulus on last year's team and you're talking Final 4. Cherokee was a stud his junior and senior years. He was a great sidekick to Grant his junior year and not his fault his senior season. His senior year is why he's not talked about more but he put up great stats against some future nba players: Duncan, Joe Smith, and Rasheed

DaMarcus Nelson needs to be on there. He was one of my favorites.
He was extremely detrimental to our recruiting. Was very happy when he graduated to be honest.
I don't want to hijack the thread or turn it into something negative, but he is one of my least favorite ever....Never was a fan.
Before Coach K Tate Armstrong, Vince Taylor, Kenny Dennard, Bob Fleisher, Jim Spanarkel, Mike Lewis, Dick Devenzio, Bob Verga, Steve Vacendek, Randy Denton, Dave Golden, Gene Banks, Mike Gminski, George Moses, and Willie Hodge. OFC
Vince Taylor, Kenny Dennard, David Henderson, and probably the most over looked of all Mark Alarie. Most would say Dawkins as most important recruit, Alarie a very close second...he provided a big man "template" that helped K survive his early year s in the ACC. Skilled, mobile, jump shot and good FT shooter. Alarie, Ferry, Parks, CL,...K was not getting Reid or Williams in those days Dean and others were, it wasn't until Dean left and K became more nationally prominat that he started to get that physically dominant player like Brand and Boozer. A lot o fans today don't understand what some of the front courts in the ACC were like in the 80s imagine Carter and Bagley as seniors in the ACC, and a 6'8" guy from AZ, whose only help was a couple of foul spreading hustle guys in Bilas and Meagher neutralizedand sometime out played the best front lines the ACC has ever produced. Re"mark"able player and like Dawkins K owes a lot a someone who gave him a shot.
When I was a kid, I went to a basketball camp at a local church in Charlotte that was ran by Tate Armstrong. My mom was about 30 minutes late picking me up, so I stood in the doorway at the gym and watched Tate practice alone. I was really impressed to see a guy go full speed, non stop for 30 minutes. I learned more from that than the 4 days of camp.
Some very good ones...my first thought was Carawell also...he was the man his senior year especially. I also like Nelson as a suggestion.

Exactly. Having Greg on here is laughable. Expected so much more out of him, was supposed to be the PG on our 06 Title team, then it was all downhill from there......

He made Lonzo Ball's jumper look textbook, but he was a great kid and a quality Blue Devil.
Paulus came through at a time when Duke was down. Maybe you need to go look at shooting stats for the 06 NCAA tournament and see who shot 3-18 against LSU.

Yeah, JJ had a bad game, we got beat by a very athletic team. JJ and Shelden were studs that whole season. Our PG play was suspect all year, was definitely our weakness, much like last years team.
Not saying Paulus was one of the greats. The thread is unappreciated. Put Paulus on last years team and we are probably final 4. He was a tough true point guard. He led the acc in assists his freshman year. Duke was bad from 05-09.
One game sample in ncaa tournament? Here you go ace: 2-16 in 03, 4-12 in 04, 4-14 in 05, and then 3-18 in 06. You know who this was too.
Nobody wanted to come and play with him. Our recruiting was bad (by our standards) those years.
Okay got it. Our all-time leading scorer is bad because of a one-game sample in each of his four seasons. And Greg is fantastic because he's a "leader." Got it, makes tons of sense now.
Paulus would have been invaluable on last year's team. We lacked a true PG I agree. You could have brought Matt off the bench, in a role I think he would have been better suited toward.

First line ace: "Not saying Paulus was one of the greats." Where did I say Paulus was fantastic? It's my opinion he was unappreciated.
Respectfully disagree he was solid pg just not a great one.A lot of the grief that he gets is due to the fact that He could not guard Ty Lawson.
Fair. I get the argument he was underappreciated, because frankly, he isn't appreciated at all. Taking out his freshman year (when we had a real title chance) those next 3 years were just a nightmare. Not saying he is to be blamed, but every time I think of Greg, I think of Lawson abusing him and Danny Green dunking on him.
Greg played hard, I guess he was a solid "leader." But he should have never been a Duke starting PG, we missed on that recruit. Look at what happened the following year when Scheyer was the starting PG.
Its just personal opinion. I suppose the same argument you make about Dennard could be made about Chris Carrawell, could it not? After all he was "appreciated" enough to win an ACC POY honor....
Hey its like this, you may appreciate Dennard, but maybe not everybody appreciates him for threading the needle to Banks for the game tying shot in '81 to send the UNC game into OT....Taking out Buck Williams underneath on Al King's miss at the buzzer in the '80 ACC final, etc, etc.. OFC
1000 plus points and close to 500 assists is a pretty good career.As you said he could not guard Lawson which caused us to lose to the evil kingdom several times but who could guard him
You're entitled to your opinion too...I just think he fills the role we needed last year as a PG. We've been down this road before, but Matt was a liabilty in so many ways and I think Greg at least distributes the ball better and handles defensive pressure more adequately.

For a 4 year player, who started his freshman year, 1000 points and 500 assists is nothing.
Thats less than 10 points a game and less than 5 assists a game, again for a starting pg, who couldn't keep anyone in front of him.
Don't want to come across as a Paulus-hater, but the 07 08 and 09 seasons are very forgettable. And I think he deserves part of the blame. Ultimately we recruited him though. And yes, if I had to chose my least favorite Duke player, it's probably Greg, still rooted for him every single game to do great (even though most of the cheering was for him to move to the bench.)
From a numbers standpoint, he had a very nice career. He also lived and breathed everything Duke.
That said, he wasn't very appreciated by many of his teammates. Greg wasn't the most liked guy....and in private, there were big-name recruits who alluded to spurning Duke partly because of Greg.
Maybe. But see my post above. Greg didn't have the best reputation.
As far as defensively, I couldn't disagree more. Greg did some things very well....defense was NOT one of them.
Well defense wasnt a strong suit of last year's team anyway, and Matty was really only a good defensive player relative to other players on that team. I would have rather had Greg's additional points than Matt starting. (Matt would have been good off pine).
I would also like to know some of the "big name recruits" who specifically turned Duke down because of Greg....If he did earn this reputation it hasnt hurt his career in coaching, as he seems to be moving up the tree gradually. OFC
