Okay, so we lost our first game, and it won't be the last. Sure, it was to BC, but it was on the road also and they aren't that easy...as our guys found out.

We got beat in almost all phases of the game, even out rebounded (which I think is probably a 1st this season). They shot lights out from the field (and especially from behind the arc), and yes our D could have been better, but some of those shots were contested and still went in.

We shot horrible from 3 (mostly because of Grayson's 1 of 9). Still, with everything that went wrong our guys once again came back from several deficits to take the lead, and I (and probably most everyone here) thought we were going to win when that happened. Two things happened to change that, (1) for the first time this season we made bad decisions at the end when the game was ours for the taking...a Duval 3, Bags 3, bad turnover, Duval flagrant foul, etc., and (2) BC didn't lose their poise, which is hard to do when a team like Duke comes storming back.

So, the good things are we did show the ability to come back (again), and we shot fts well.
It's also only the second week in December and we're playing 4 freshmen in the starting lineup (and sometimes 5 freshmen on the floor), so we're very young, but we will get better...much better.

And finally, these guys are our guys, win or lose. No one on this board wants to win as much as they do. These guys, I truly believe, are special, but they're not perfect, and there are going to be some growing pains. They've been tested, and now beaten, but not broken. Greatness almost never comes unless adversity paves the road.

Great post Dirt. The team has some time to work on a few things, with the 2 most important in my opinion being team defense and Duvals decision making. Talent is definitely there.

Yep, we're going to learn from it, Mac, and thankfully we've got plenty of time, and games to get it right.

Here's my analysis:

1. We lost to a team that shot out of its mind yesterday. That usually happens when underdogs play heavy favorites. So it's not bad but it *could* be a concern. Why? Because we could run into a double-digit seed that chooses to go off on us in the NCAA Tournament.

2. After Javin fouled out, BC made its run. For some reason, we played well when Javin was in the game in the second half and then he picked up his 4th and 5th foul within 1 minute and BC made its run.

3. We're still an elite team. With the loss, the staff have a chance to show them their mistakes. It's hard to get a team's attention when they're undefeated and a unanimous No. 1 ranked team in the nation. Now K can break them down and build them up.

4. Should have NEVER been outrebounded by BC. That should NEVER happen.

In the end, we will be fine. We can't help if teams choose to have a historic night from the 3-point line (remember, we are used to beating teams from the 3 point line in the past, as well).

You and OAD summed it up. There is a ton to work on. Last time i checked we knew that before yesterday’s game. And while i hate losing more than i enjoy winning, i do think a loss is good for this group. I said it before, but you can’t keep putting yourself in that position. Getting down and expecting that you’ll claw back. Bc guess what, sometimes those shots aren’t going to fall next time for you, or sometimes the opponent isn’t going to miss. Or maybe the refs aren’t going to call the game your way down the stretch. Whatever it might be, this is a great learning moment for this team. I hate losing but it was probably for the best. Learn from it and move on.

I don't care if Duke loses 10 games just be ready to beat unc and nc state. If losing games to help build a bench or chemistry down the road so be it.

I can't explain why, but I was less upset over losing that game than any loss we have ever had. Maybe because I never expected to go undefeated anyway, BC had a shooting night they won't have the rest of the year, and because I still believe we are the best team in the country and still the favorite to win it all

We’re going to lose more games too. That’s alright. Are we going to get better? That’s what all of us want to see.
Get to find out what this team is made of. They lost a game they should never lost. Credit BC for shooting the lights out of Conte forum, but we still had a chance to win and screwed it up. I think we have a really tough minded team and i think they will respond. However they have to get smarter in game, not just about effort. Learning time, coaching time, gut check time.

Plain and simple, 3 point shooting is our worst asset and we did it...30 times!!!!

When they do what they do best, they’re better than everyone in the nation hands down. Anymore losses this season, I would bet we shoot more than 20 3’s. It is what it is.

OAD, great post. I couldn't get on the board after the game, but that's good because you saved me a lot of typing!
I would venture to say that not one person on this board, or any other Duke fan for that matter, thought that BC would continue to shoot the lights out in the 2nd half, and that includes me. When a team shoots like that, the result is going to be bad, yet these kids almost pulled it out!
I have been saying all along that no matter how good they are, they are still just freshmen.
They have been hearing all along how great they are in the press and from other people, so maybe this was a blessing in disguise. A loss, the crowd chanting "over rated", and landing back on earth with a dose of reality.
The question now is, after all their success so far, will they start pointing fingers at each other, lose their continuity, play as individuals instead of a team? My money says no, this will make them stronger and even more cohesive as a group.
I really like this group of kids, and don't go away just yet folks, the best is yet to come. Trust me when I tell you "It's gonna be ok"!
Go Duke!

It was a loss. A bad loss. To an un-ranked conference team. But... it was a good time for such a loss. We have a gifted, talented, and young team. A team that likely thought that their talent would be enough to win any game. Guess what? It’s not. We get everyone’s best shot. We all know that but these kids had to learn that the hard way. But, this gives Krzyzewski a great teaching opportunity; one upon which he could only truly capitalize after a loss. It’s time for these kids to grow up and part of growing up is learning that you can’t be great while only playing 6 minutes of inspired basketball each half. Luckily, Krzyzewski has some time to impart this lesson before the ACC season begins in earnest.

Yeah, JC, our guys have to try to condense 4 years worth of teaching and acquired experience in one season, so it's a hard thing to do! But the loss will get their attention, and as Timo mentioned a loss is good for our team at this time. You can learn a lot from a loss. Our guys have shown they have heart with the way they have responded when being down, so I don't think they'll have a problem dealing with a little adversity like this loss.
You're right, 'it's gonna be ok'!:D

Same thing happened to Kansas vs ASU. ASU just kept hitting some shots that were one on one chuck it up moves and no one can keep up with that usually.

Well, I think this was the case of the perfect storm. It was at BC, the Eagles did almost everything well, and Duke did almost everything not so well. And it took every bit of that to come together for them to pull off the upset.
I'm not excusing the loss either, because we should have one. If we just rebound a little better (which is our strong point) we still would have won...but we didn't. You have to bring it, each and every game, or something like this can happen.
