The link is below....but a couple highlights

-the starting five (right now) appears to be Trevon, Grayson, Gary, Marvin and Wendell
-he said both Marques and Javin will be huge contributors
-Goldwire has had a nice fall and could play some this season
-said it’s an honor to be voted preseason #1, but he also said that not a single one of the voters has seen his team yet
-Trevon is good but has to find his verve
-he said “we’ll go as deep as we need to” then followed it up by explaining that every night is different and there is no magical formula

That's been the most popular prediction on a starting 5 since Marvin committed, as well as the most predicted top 7. Marques didn't have a great freshmen year, but most of us have expected him to be a contributor. In Javin's case, that's been a bit more of an optimistic stretch, so it's good to hear from the man himself it's developing that way. Surprising and exciting news about Jordan G. He's definitely the least heralded of our incoming freshmen. Tip of the hat to those of you who predicted that.

Realistically high standards for Trevon to strive for, but he's a freshman being handed the keys to a pretty souped-up muscle car. We should remember Jayson's struggles finding his "verve" last year, how frustrated some of us were, and how he really blossomed by the end. It's not like our expectations will add to the immense (but constructive) pressure he will willingly put on himself, but it'll do our blood pressure some good to try to be patient.

Cynically speaking, going "as deep as we need to" has typically been code for "shut up you message board hacks; we might end up 6 deep." Following it up by saying every night is different, though, implies a willingness and flexibility about Tucker and Jack and others being ready to go when the situation calls for it.

If this team only goes six deep they are in trouble.

Right now imo I say eight unless we are just blowing out teams.

Goldwire was impressive and disrupted Duval a lot

Agreed, but with the caveat that if we only go 6 deep it will be b/c going deeper would have been even worse.

This team is going more than 6 deep. Too much talent and too many combinations to go only 6 deep. (K even mentioned in the presser Allen and Trent w/3 bigs for instance). Plus look at some of the other guys stats: Javin w/9 bds led the rebounding for his squad and Jack White in similar mins led his team w/6 bds.

Its to early to say "I told you so," but it was gratifying to see Goldwire do so well, and K mention he could contribute this year. O'Connell cant be left open and I predict he hits some big shots this year!

Yeah, last night still doesn’t convince me Goldwire plays a whole lot. As another poster alluded to, K said himself that we would potentially see some of Grayson and Gary together, along with three bigs. That tells me it’s not a foregone conclusion that Jordan G. is seeing much for minutes.

I’ll say this, though, in the 20 minutes we watched last night, his play looked encouraging and ahead of where I thought he would be at this juncture.

But HE was the one that complained about a lack of depth after losing to South Carolina last year. We're only going by HIS words, tho. And it's a different time as well. Kids aren't the same. We can't expect someone to come off the bench in the NCAA Tournament after not playing much during the regular season to come in and contribute the same or more as the player they're replacing. That works with older teams; not so much with younger teams, which is why we need to develop and use our bench a little more.

Yeah I recall you had him fairly well down the totem pole, like most. I am not saying hes going to see a lot of PT, but I think we all have a better feeling about him after last nite. Kid has no fear and a decent shot, and plays solid D.

Agreed, but I think certain variables played into that last season...variables we couldn’t have seen coming. You don’t develop depth solely by sticking a kid into the game and letting him play. He’s not talking about that.

But you can't also expect a guy to step in with little to no game time experience in key games down the stretch and calling that depth, either. I'm not saying he should go all Roy Williams and play the managers as well, but this team could go at least 8-9 deep.

Again, since HE was the one that mentioned it after the loss AND recruited like he plans to use that depth, now it's time to cash in the chips.

I completely agree with ya Q. Last year was almost proof, to a lot of people, that K and his iron man ball in this era may need to be tweaked. I don't want to see Ol Roy substitutions either, but a player or two getting some minutes can only help.
Yeah if Allen and Bagley are tearing it up, I don't expect them to come out, but he can find some middle ground I think. Someone that is good will probably not play as much as some think they should, but I think K can adjust a little to get 8 guys some quality time on the court.
The one guy that seems to have caught some good reviews is Goldwire. I didn't see it last night, but I have to believe what everyone says that watched him. Sounds like he could be a pleasant fill in, especially if Duval gets a little sloppy. Pretty good comments for a "3 star" kid, and between him, O'Connell, Delaurier, and a couple others, the team seems to be sitting in good shape.
The bench is critical to the team, and yes, practice time is good, but no one really knows what a kid can do until their out there in an actual game.

I very much agree that we will go deeper than 6; I'm just usually of a mind to accept when that's all we play that the 7th guy wasn't ready, rather than that he wasn't given an opportunity. That goes for the 1st guy out of the rotation however deep we play. While Javin was the top guess, there was a pretty steep drop off in confidence after the first 6 as to who that 7th guy would be. I'd been thinking it might be Tucker, just b/c he's an ideal wing, but if Javin can fill that role, maybe a different skillset like Goldwire's has the edge for a potential 8th spot.

All about this....Hey Duval gets a couple quick fouls, I have no problem if Goldwire gets couple mins at PG. OFC

Javin IMO gives us some variables we didnt have last year, and I would see him as that 7th guy, but a Jordan (as you noted) or O'Connell or White all vying in intense competion for the 8th spot. Then as you mentioned Goldwire pushing as well. If we stay healthy( HUGE IF), PRACTICE COMPETITION will really make this team even BETTER! OFC

As a heels fan who has a lot of respect for coach k, I have to say I have been shocked at the way he's used his bench in recent years. Last year being a prime example. If he only rolls with 6 or 7 guys this year, it may be time to start asking some hard questions. I hope this post is taken in the spirit intended.

I agree, unless we win it all. K doesn't play a deep bench, no secret there, and it's worked 5 times, but that is a knock on him, so to speak, on the years we fall short or really flame out. As a whole I think he should play 8 every year, and this year we are at least 8 deep. But he won't compromise quality for quantity if the guys on the court are getting it done, it's when they aren't or foul trouble becomes a factor that bites him.

He regretted our lack of depth, but I don't think that means he was kicking himself for not giving several more guys regular minutes in games earlier in the season. He regretted so few guys were ready to contribute.

K does continue to learn, but that's not why we likely go deeper this year. We've gone deeper before. He didn't regress, then re-learn it this off-season.

For sure, but as you noted but first sign of slippage or foul trouble, he can take pride in what he has to turn to on the bench...Much deeper than Norman Dale's squad! Lol, OFC

There are "No regrets" about that this year. DeLaurier and Jack White probably werent the top rebounders in the scrimmage a year ago....

Last year was a "REGRESSION," no matter how you cut it.K knows it, and hes determined not to flame out early this year. I think the better bench plays a part in it, and the old guy's fire in the belly too is RED HOT!

It could be read two different ways, sure, but if a kid that he has, and most all are highly recruited, are not getting minutes, then who's responsible for them getting no time? Is it all the player or the coach? Or could it be a little of both?
He has had to adapt, like doing something different defensively, and the next thing is a little deeper bench.
The argument could be made that we may have been a little better last year had an extra guy or so seen minutes during the season. Maybe not, but we're all guessing on what a guy will do when the warmups never come off.

I think the hard questions have been asked by many for a lot of years now. K playing a tighter rotation isn’t new to just 2015-16 and 2016-17. It’s still my belief that last year just ballooned out of control from the start. In all the years I’ve watched basketball, I’ve never seen a more dysfunctional season, regardless of level.

I think last season was incredibly dysfunctional....not a regression. K didn’t have a great year, IMO, but there were so many factors that contributed to everything. It’s like if you worked in sales during the recession....you didn’t regress or become a worse salesperson overnight. Other obstacles were at play. That’s how I would describe last season. It was maddening.

(The tease of an ACC championship followed by UNC winning it all just made it worse.)

The only hard question that should be asked of K is whether, either through science or magic, we can make him live forever and be the Duke coach forever.

Thats my point....We were ACC Champs and couldnt make Sweet 16 after seemingly righting the ship. We were fairly healthy after Brooklyn and looked like MEN. Next weekend we got pushed around like BOYS by a HUNGRIER GROUP. Giving up 60+ points in a half is a regression by Duke standards.

Or an anomaly.
I look at last year as an airplane ride from hell. A shaky takeoff, followed by some turbulence, you think the pilot got it leveled out, then BAM! a landing where you crapped your pants. K couldn't right the plane.
Sometimes I think he was as baffled as we were.

What I meant was, if K only goes six deep that means Grayson, Duval and Trent are playing forty minutes a game which spells disaster for Duke.
If Duke were to go only six Deep then what's the since of using scholarships. Just recruit eight kids and fill the rest of the roster up with walk ons.
If Goldwire can disrupt Duval like he did last night I'm wanting to see how Duval handles better pedigree PGs especially seasoned ones.
